## What is Radar Glance?

Radar Glance is a field-friendly animated weather radar for iPhone and iPad. Open it to see precipitation moving across an Apple Maps base layer, switch to satellite infrared when cloud-top structure matters, save important places, and use built-in tools to understand what the radar is actually showing.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Radar Glance does not require an account, developer backend, third-party analytics SDK, advertising SDK, or tracking. Saved places, settings, and camera position stay on your device. Location permission is optional and used only to center the map.

Radar data is provided by RainViewer; the base map is Apple Maps. Radar Glance is for general weather awareness and planning. It does not issue warnings, detect hazards, or replace official watches, warnings, emergency alerts, national weather services, or local authorities.

### 3.0 — 2026-08-28

Radar Glance 3.0 introduces Rain Window, a focused way to check whether a selected place may get wet during a planned time.

- Choose a point, start time, duration, and rain threshold
- Compare observed and provider-forecast radar at that exact coordinate
- Add official NWS hourly precipitation and active-alert context for supported US locations
- See clear confidence, freshness, cached, unavailable, and missing-forecast states
- Use a redesigned first screen with stable iPhone and iPad controls
- Location permission now appears only after a location-based action

This update also adds stronger response parsing tests, normal-launch UI tests, and more precise privacy and safety language.

Version 2.1 adds a pro field upgrade for Radar Glance.

New Storm Desk:
- Range, storm-speed presets, and ETA estimate from the current map center
- Reflectivity sample with approximate rainfall-rate math
- Beam-height estimate for judging distant radar confidence

Radar Glance 2.0 — a pro upgrade with powerful new on-device tools.

• Range & Bearing: great-circle distance and true compass bearing from you (or a saved place) to anywhere on the map, with an animated compass.
• Storm ETA: an honest "arrives in ~X min" estimate from a storm's speed.
• Radar beam-height readout: see how high the radar beam is at a given distance, and why far-off rain gets missed.
• dBZ ⇄ rainfall calculator: map reflectivity to an approximate rain rate (Marshall-Palmer).
• Saved-location bearing board: distance and compass point to each saved place at a glance.
• Daylight & layer hint: sunrise/sunset and a night-aware Satellite IR suggestion.

All of the new tools compute entirely on your device.

Precipitation Intensity Guide — a new offline reference tells you what the radar colors actually mean. Open it from the "i" button on the map or from Settings > About. It shows the full 8-level NWS dBZ scale (Trace through Extreme), approximate rainfall rates, plain-English descriptions, and a palette-specific paint guide that maps your active color scheme's shades to intensity levels. Sourced from NOAA/NWS NEXRAD and the Wikipedia dBZ article. Entirely offline — no network needed.

Distance Rings — optional dashed concentric circles on the radar map help you eyeball how far approaching precipitation is. Turn them on in Settings > Distance Rings and choose Close-in (25 / 50 / 100 mi) or Wide-area (50 / 100 / 200 mi). The unit follows your device locale automatically (miles or kilometres). Rings stay centered as you pan.

Bug fix — switching the map layer (Radar / Satellite IR) in Settings now correctly rebuilds the frame list from the cached manifest immediately, rather than waiting for the next auto-refresh cycle.

Version 1.1

Saved Locations — bookmark any place for one-tap radar access. Search for a city, tap the bookmark icon next to a result, and it's saved. Open your bookmarks from the map with the bookmark button in the top bar. Rename or delete saved spots with a swipe.

Satellite IR layer — switch between precipitation radar and satellite infrared directly from the map. The new Radar / Satellite IR toggle at the top of the screen shows cloud cover and storm tops without any precipitation filtering — especially useful at night or when radar coverage is sparse. The same toggle is also in Settings.

Share current frame — tap the share button in the top bar to capture a snapshot of whatever is on your radar screen and share it via Messages, Mail, or any app. The timestamp and layer name are included in the share text so the recipient always knows what they're looking at.

Plus: the layer mode setting appears at the top of the Settings sheet. Version info in About now reflects 1.1 (2).
