You know the ones which pop up adverts for hotel booking or “cashback” opportunities when you’re booking a ticket to the office. This app simply let me book a ticket and add it to my wallet. I particularly like the ability to add to calendar and to select via a particular station. I wish they would add the fare zone for the stations so that I could more easily extend my existing ticket. Unfortunately this app makes it very difficult to make the switch. I’m trying to book a train advertised on both the Trainline and the National Rail website, but it does not appear in this app no matter how I tweak the results. Plus, the layout is awful. You try to see earlier or later trains but the link is so small that it frequently sends you to the nearest ticket option instead. Three times I’ve used it to check my train to get in to work, only to get to the station and there’re no trains due to ‘planned engineering work’ Too unreliable. ### 1/5 — Train Delayed - but it wasn’t *2024-10-24, version 5.22* Said my train was delayed by 20 minutes when in reality it left on time ### 1/5 — Utterly confused *2024-10-13, version 5.22* Can’t get it to give me a return journey. ### 1/5 — Hate this app *2024-08-21* I was needing to go near london on the train as my main app for booking trains wasn’t working that night so I installed this app, I thought it was easy enough at the start however it doesn’t show what platforms you need to go to for your train. I emailed them and asked about my platforms. I gave them my booking reference so they know where I am going and I get an email back saying to go talk to staff at the train stations about what platform my trains are at, I had to email multiple times to confirm where my platforms would be as it is more helpful to know where I am going before hand. I do not recommend this app. However I will recommend another app, called trainline. Trainline is so helpful and so easy to use, it makes life so much easier than this app. **Developer response:** Hi, sorry to hear the platform numbers weren’t showing for your journey. Railboard always shows the platform numbers when they are known, but sometimes, the information is not yet available or is unavailable for other reasons. When platforms don’t show, it’s usually because the train is not due to depart for a while, so it’s not known yet which platform the train will go to. But it can also be the case that there are technical issues with the train company or train station from passing the platform information to apps and websites. If this is the case, it will affect all apps and websites. Sorry for letting you down in this instance, but do the best possible with the information available. ### 1/5 — QR codes don’t work at barriers *2023-12-01* I thought this would be the solution when Trainline couldn’t make bookings, seemed to work great until I needed to get out of the station (or back in on the return journey). Try something else if you have barriers to get through… The response from the developer was that they’re better than paper tickets and the barriers must have been faulty and that I should see a member of staff. Well everyone else was getting through the barriers with their e tickets, and yes I had to bother a member of staff which is a pain in the backside, and when I used the Trainline app the following day, their ticket got me through the barrier no problem. So, use Railboard if you’re happy to seek a member of staff if you need to get through a barrier, or use a different app with bigger barcodes (that seems to be the difference from what I can see) if you don’t. **Developer response:** Hi, If you ever have issues getting through the barriers, we’d recommend finding a member of station staff to help. It sounds like, in this case, maybe the barriers were faulty. Alternatively, the other thing that can catch people out is that if you have multiple tickets for your journey, such as if you had two singles or split tickets, then it’s necessary to make sure you’re using the correct barcode to exit the station. That literally caught me out for a moment yesterday until I realised I was using the wrong barcode for that station. So that’s something to keep in mind! The e-ticket barcodes work whenever they are valid. Up until this review, all the feedback we’ve received about e-tickets has been overwhelmingly positive, and mostly focused on how much more convenient they are than paper tickets. ~Jon ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — The Best Rail App *2026-08-21, version 5.30* When I have train issues this is by far the best app. I can check many routes incredibly quickly, swapping between departures and arrivals. No other app has allowed me to navigate delays and cancellations like this one. Highly recommended. ### 5/5 — THE goto train & platform app *2026-08-17, version 5.30* I’ve used this app since my recommended it to me a few years ago. No bloat features just straightforward, rapid access to journey planning and live trains & platforms. National Tail/GB Rail should just write these guys a blank cheque and let them to fill in whatever they need to fund the running of this app forever. I say 90%… the other 10% of the time I use Trains app - it has a ‘Next train home’ button - brilliant when one’s head is fuzzy and there are several stations to choose from.
