The guide books are sometimes good and sometimes not, as some authors put more work than others. No good mechanism for correcting mistakes or leaving comments ### 3/5 — Lots of potential, still better than no guidebook! *2025-05-25, version 41.0* Initially couldn’t download the guidebook of my area, took a week+ to figure it out However, now that it works- this app has massive potential to be the best: great layout, lots of info spots, useable gps without data Buggy at times, one example: reducing “subcategories” of areas- doesnt tick close ### 2/5 — Not a guidebook *2024-12-31, version 41.0* Bought a digital “guidebook”, unfortunately they don’t offer digital guidebooks they just sell the content in their app as a “guidebook”. I find the app is difficult to use and the guidebook I bought exists as a print book so why I can’t buy a digital copy is strange to me. I am not trying to be overly negative but I just wish they gave users the choice of how they want to use it. I’ll need to buy the print version now to get what I was hoping for. ### 2/5 — Poor interface. *2024-12-30* The interface is totally unintuitive and hard to navigate, particularly on a phone. ### 2/5 — App is corrupted or something *2024-04-07, version 41.0* Clicking on Certain routes (sun kissed) causes the app to crash. When you reset the app and try to go to the same route again, same thing—it crashes. I’m not going to try anymore. And given that I am the first ascent author this route, it doesn’t affect me, but I pity anyone who is trying to use this app when it crashes. ### 3/5 — Great app when it works. *2024-03-07, version 41.0* When this app works it is 5/5. Having all of the I formation for routes and interactive maps is amazing. The filtering within the guidebook makes it super easy to find what I need. Easier and better than any guidebook I’ve used. (Years of climbing and back country experience) At least 50% of the time it doesn’t work. I open the app to a frozen screen and have to delete the app, redownload the app, log back in, redownload my guidebooks. This makes it unreliable and unusable in backcountry situations. Still works for planning but it will never be a true guidebook replacement unless it can work reliably. ### 1/5 — Bad UI, loads of bugs *2023-03-05, version 38.0* UI is absolutely not intuitive, lot of glitches and bugs. The only value is that some topo are exclusively available here, but I would not recommend anyone to start using this app to share their topo. ### 4/5 — Great for winter backcountry, mostly *2023-02-05, version 38.0* Indispensable source of maps, backcountry ski and safety info, and GPS location (for Cameron Pass in Colorado anyway). However, a bug sometimes makes it difficult to find your way and safely return to your car. It seems to happen if you haven’t used the app for a while, then start using it when already out of internet connectivity. Base maps and, more importantly, trail lines do not appear - only the trail symbols are visible. The problem resolves itself when you have connectivity again. So if you are relying on this app for navigation, make sure to “warm it up” while you still have Internet the day you head out there. ### 1/5 — Garbage app *2022-12-24, version 38.0* I’ve paid for a book twice over the years. The bookshelf is buggy, I paid for a book and I am still yet to be able to open it even after the dev team told me I should be able to. However, it crashes often. Not worth it over a physical book at all. ### 4/5 — Some small issues but 2.5 stars? *2022-06-03, version 36.0* Have only really used the app for Grayson Highlands Bouldering so I can’t say anything about the app as a whole. There are a few missing problems that are present in the hard copy (which I don’t own personally but a friend does) but overall a good chunk of the information made it over, not to mention seeing a map of all the problems Mountain Project style accompanied by more detailed problem descriptions directly from the guidebook really is an awesome experience. If they fine tuned the guidebook features themselves, like including page pdf’s instead of difficult to navigate and cluttered menus, I would proudly recommend this to all of my friends. ### 2/5 — Good idea, bad execution *2022-05-01, version 36.0* The app crashes every 30 seconds ### 2/5 — Cool but constantly freezes *2022-04-15, version 36.0* I use this app for the Silverton Backcountry skiing guidebook. It has a lot of solid features and it’s great having GPS to keep you on the skin track. However the app consistently freezes up when I’m using it and I have to exit and restart it. Routes are also mislabeled when comparing the list to the images. I’ve emailed rakkup before to get them to press for an update from the author with no response back. If you want to use this for the New, support Waterstonia and just get a physical copy instead. ### 1/5 — Difficult to use, incomplete *2024-04-15, version 41.0* Navigating this app is rather frustrating experience. I’ve tried to make it work, tried to like it. It just never gets better. We all know that any guidebook is outdated the minute after it’s published but some of the guides for sell here are grossly incomplete. Let’s talk about Red Rocks. Neither Armatron nor Birdland are listed, how is this possible? Crimson Chrysalis, Olive Oil, and Dark Shadows are listed but not one of these includes any photos or Topo and of the three, only Dark Shadows provides any description of the pitches. Crimson Chrysalis and Olive Oil just list the pitch numbers along with their grade. Seriously? That’s all? There should be an access code if you have bought the actual book. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Honestly, pretty great for researching *2024-01-20, version 40.1* My primary use for this app is research, not for navigating. And I typically cross reference what I'm looking at. This app provides access to an incredible wealth of beta, that is curated by specific authors. This app is a platform that works to standardize and distribute guide books in a relatively immersive format. These books are written by different authors and may contain more or less info, but they all at a minimum contain filterable stacks of lines and route accompanied by surprisingly high quality images. The ipadOS version is particularly nice, as it makes full use of the screen size. Would highly recommend adding this app (and some of the guide books!) to your backcountry kit for finding new lines to explroe. ### 5/5 — A Step up in Digital Guidebooks *2023-04-13, version 39.0* The app is user friendly and includes and ever-increasing amount of beloved climbing areas. I was in CA and decided at the last minute to go to Joshua Tree. It was the night before the trip and I didn’t have any kind of guidebook. I did some panicked googling and found this app. It had bad reviews, so I had reservations, but it was my only hope. It ended up being AMAZING. The guide had so many climbs and the GPS feature worked even though I had no service and my phone was on airplane mode! It saved the trip and I downloaded the guides for my home climbing areas (Great Falls and Carderock). The guides in the app had routes that weren’t in any of the books I owned. Very very satisfied with the purchase. It was fantastic To see the lines and description of the climbs. If you’re headed to Peña de Bernal in Querétaro México Rakkup has the only complete guide in existence for the area. All of the misinformation with regards to the climbing at La Peña has been solved. It is a massive improvement over Mountain Project and is constantly updatable. GPS positioning, images, and descriptions will get you right where you need to go. It took me a day or two to figure out how to best navigate the app, but after a short learning curve I was a pro. I stopped carrying the printed guide with me as it was easier to use the Rakkup app and it didn’t weigh my pack down. I especially like the gps trails. No more driving around aimlessly hoping you parked at the right pullout, then walking along the wrong game trail. I highly recommend this app (and its guides).
