## What is Rarámuri?

Rarámuri: Shared Breath is a field guide to the belief world of the Rarámuri, the people of the Sierra Madre in Chihuahua, Mexico, told in 94 cards across ten families.

The Rarámuri are a living people. 91,554 people spoke the language at the 2020 Mexican census, in five recognised variants, and everything in this app is written in the present tense. They are widely known by the exonym Tarahumara, and outside Mexico they are usually known for one thing only. This app is about everything else: the deities and the cosmos, souls and breath, the dance year, tesgüino and kórima, healers and the figures people fear, the sacred plants, the maize, the made things, and the land itself.

Every card says how we know.

Each one names its sources and carries a flag saying how firmly the claim is attested, from recorded in the ethnographic record through to reconstructed. Where two sources disagree, both readings ride along on the card instead of one being quietly chosen for you. Where something reached this deck only through another writer rather than from a first witness, the card says so instead of counting it twice. Where no source supports a detail, the detail is not here, even when it would have made a better sentence.

There is no calendar in this app, and that is deliberate. Nothing like the Maya day count exists for the Rarámuri, and inventing one would have been a fabrication. A card arrives each day, and it is simply a card for today. The seasons it notices, and the fixed dances, belong to the living syncretic year rather than to an ancient count. Nothing here tells you your future.

Every card carries an illustration, and under every illustration is a line saying what the picture is: an interpretation, not a record. Nobody photographed these things. They are built from materials and light the sources describe, and not one of them shows a person, because a generated face would be an invented person presented as one of a real people.

This is an outside compilation, and the app says so on its own about page. It was built from published scholarship and public domain primary sources, by someone who is not Rarámuri and who did not consult any Rarámuri community. That is worth saying plainly rather than leaving you to assume otherwise.

The title comes from iwériga, one Rarámuri word that carries breath, soul, and stamina at once. It is the spine of the whole deck. This is not a breathing app.

Fully offline. Search across all 94 cards. Two lights, one for the time of the Father and one for the time of the Mother, which is the attested seasonal pair rather than a dark mode switch. No account, no tracking, no notifications, no streaks, nothing to keep up with. Your time here stays yours.

The app is free and stays free. Every card, both lights, every day. Nothing unlocks.

If it becomes part of your days there are four optional offerings in Settings, and they buy nothing at all. Sixty percent of what is left after costs goes to Native Seeds/SEARCH, who keep 414 seed accessions that came from Rarámuri farmers, including maize that is a card in this deck, and on every tenth offering all of it does.
