### 4/5 — So much potential...MORE PLEASE!

*2015-06-01, version 3.9*

I NEVER review things, but had to for this. As an RPG obsessed gamer, as well as as a lifelong martial artist/fitness freak, I've constantly dreamed of being to Level Up myself. This app blends the popular 10,000 hour idea of grinding hours into a specific skill set to mastery. Only reason for 4 stars is that it could be So. Much. More.
There's only a few character images, and no real character customization, (Yet?)
I'd love to see a basic character creator (maybe one less cartoony than the current images) where I could design my character's appearance, class, etc and then get new armor/weapons/etc as loot whenever I put more hours in.
Otherwise, this is a great time recorder for skill sets.

### 4/5 — Very nice app

*2015-05-16, version 3.9*

This app is very functional and easy to use and set up. The ability to auto record time on task really makes this app shine. The "reward" system for doing tasks is perfect, it's random enough to keep you "playing" but not feel "grindy"
My only complaint is that there is not enough items to buy.

### 4/5 — Excellent App With Excellent Potential

*2015-03-03, version 3.8*

Really nice interface, with fun characters, and ways to improve anything with dailies or the main skill.
The only thing this app lacks is stuff. If you practice your skills you get coins, and if you do dailies you get gems. But the only things to spend it on are characters, color schemes, a few things to increase coin production, and a coven.
So although I enjoyed the app, there was very little motivation, and even less to do.
What I recommend is keeping everything, but making it into a game, tower defense or platform or something. Choose your character, use coins and gems to add weapons, defenses, level up, select new characters, etc.
To beat each level in the game and continue advancing, a player would be forced to continue practicing skills and checking dailies.
I'm just one person, and what works for me might not necessarily work for others, but I think that adding a game (or some other form of motivation) would be an excellent addition to an excellent app.

### 4/5 — Power Gamer

*2015-01-15, version 3.7*

I love this app. As a recovered LARPer earning points/coins and being able to level up my actual self is motivating.
My day usually begins and ends with using this app. I started using this app after coming down with mono. It's been a great tool on reminding me about necessary daily tasks like "eat 1,2,3" times a day (yes, each meal is a separate task). These tasks are still an important aspect of getting back to 100%. As time has progressed I've been able to track my progress in academic programs and track the time I'm investing into specific areas of study.

RareCandy is a perfect fit for geeks looking to build and maintain habits.

### 4/5 — Makes practicing fun and rewarding

*2014-12-07, version 3.6*

Using this app helps me feel like my progress and practice really means something and isn't lost to time, even if my practice schedule is irregular. It helps to remind me that I've already done so much when I get discouraged. My favorite use for this app, however, is as an embroidery timer. I do cross stitch, and one way to measure the complexity of a project is the number of hours you spend on it. So what I've done is note the amount of time I have in the skill when I start the project and subtract that from my time at the end, kind of like an odometer on a road trip. My request would be that the help section on the app say something about candies/how they are earned. The only time I saw it mentioned was in a one time welcome screen after updating the app and I'd like to be able to review that information.

### 4/5 — Huge potential!

*2014-09-15, version 3.0*

Clean visual interface and beautifully simple design. Really just need to add some more classes, achievements, incentives, etc, and it's only a matter of time before this kicks off. I do think there should be more purpose to the health and mana components if those are to stay though. There doesn't seem to be much incentive other than leveling up and, ultimately, leveling up doesn't even really give you much. Overall, this app has huge potential but still needs a bit of work. I look forward to seeing where the developers take this!

### 5/5 — Great! But needs updates.

*2014-08-24, version 3.0*

This app is great. I got it the other day and I love it a lot. It actually helps me get certain things done.

The only stuff it really needs is updates. More characters, equipment, maybe something online.

One other thing is that it only lets you know you've leveled up when you stop practicing. It would be cool to maybe have a level up alert and a little noise play one you level up, rather than having it only play when you stop.

Only other thing I'd like is a "Minutes until level up" counter.

Other than that, this app is freaking awesome!

### 5/5 — Fantastic!

*2014-08-24, version 3.0*

I love this!! It keeps me morivated to do stuff I'd find boring usually like practicing piano. I kinda wish you could change your gender with any class and maybe add more classes, but other than that its awesome!! 5 stars!!! :D

### 5/5 — A Great Idea Well Executed

*2014-08-24, version 3.0*

Rare Candy is more than just another daily to-do list or time tracker; it makes otherwise menial tasks a little more fun. I can get achievement bonuses for healthy habits and levels for practicing hobbies (and work), which helps motivate me. The app design is simple, fun and attractive, and I'm thoroughly enjoying "RPG-ing My Life."

### 5/5 — Great habit-enforcer

*2014-08-24, version 3.0*

The way the app is designed is beautiful. I was using another app to keep track of daily little rituals but I quickly replaced it with this. The leveling up makes practicing guitar addicting and I know it'll be great to keep track of those daily habits I want to form.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 2/5 — Reviews from 5 years ago haven’t been answered

*2023-03-23*

Please update the store. At least let me choose the gender of my class

### 2/5 — Wish there was more

*2018-09-14, version 3.91*

I think the idea is brilliant, but the interface is kind of boring. I think there should be more customization. People should be able to make their avatar look like themselves. Skin tone, gender, hair color, etc. It’d be great if there were different outfits to buy, or equipment related to the job you choose. Maybe you can write down a challenge you want to tackle, and it can be a boss you fight. It’s be cool to buy weapons as well. As it is right now the app is little bare.

### 2/5 — Need updated

*2017-12-18, version 3.91*

This app needs more features. It was a good start that seems like it was given up on.

### 2/5 — Moderately disappointed.

*2014-11-24, version 3.6*

I enjoyed the free version although I felt the incredibly limited shop selection (~3 items) made it difficult to evaluate how well the concept was implemented. I bit the bullet and bought the full version, and was dismayed to discover that there was nothing new. The exact same handful of classes, and the same handful of items. No more character customization, nothing. In fact, I encountered bugs in the paid version that were not present in the free version.
Considering your character is supposed to reflect you, wouldn't you think at least some aspect of the character would be modifiable? Even the free anime character generators and dress up games on the App Store allow meet such a basic requirement.
This character occupies the top third of the screen, if the developers aren't willing to spend ten minutes in photoshop to generate alternative hair colors / skin colors / etc, couldn't they at least allow a user photo to be placed here instead?
I strongly suggest that you do not buy this app. The concept is amazing, clearly the developer is creative, but as it stands they seem to be incapable of following through.

### 3/5 — Great app.

*2024-03-12*

However, it no longer works.
Bummer!!!

### 3/5 — Cool demo

*2017-09-04, version 3.91*

The interface is great and the way it works seems to be pretty fun / cool, if a bit arbitrary/unexplained. However the whole leveling up mechanic and loot doesn't really matter because there is only about 10 things to buy. This would be a 5 star app if there was more content, right now it just seems like a well polished demo. Still, it was just a buck, but its sad to see something cool not reach its potential.

### 3/5 — Very good, could improve very easily.

*2016-07-22, version 3.91*

Right now this app is really great for keeping track of your various practices and making it more fun to do them every day. As someone who likes rpgs but struggles with sticking to routines in real life, this app is a blessing. As a player, if you are expecting this to feel like a game in of itself, you will feel disappointed. If you are just looking for a bit of extra motivation to get better at certain real life skills, this is the app for you-- especially if you've got a good imagination.

I do have some important suggestions for the developers, the first of which would be very easy to implement:

1. At-A-Glance Skill Tracker: See which skills have been practiced (and for how many hours) in the last week. This way you don't have to look at every skill individually to figure this out.

2. I like that you can buy gems to change the color of the app, and I like the different characters you can choose from, but the boots and gloves don't seem to serve any purpose (practical or cosmetic). Give me a reason to want to buy them.

3. Random Encounters: Users could receive push notifications that there is a battle encounter waiting for them in the app. You would use the hp and mana from your dailies to fight your way through encounters. You use your mana to attack, and your hp to soak up damage dealt by monsters. Both refill to full every 24 hours as long as you have at least one "streak" maintained in each respective category (hp and mana). Every day you fight a slightly more challenging monster. Defeating it earns you more coins, but if your hp reaches 0 you lose some or all of your coins. Max HP and Mana could be increased through your overall character level, and maybe customized via reaching certain goal-points in your dailies (maintaining an hp streak for a month gives you +5 max hp for example)

Other people have requested cosmetic character customization. That would also be nice, but perhaps less important than the things I mentioned.

Any of those things would make MASSIVE improvement to the app.

### 3/5 — Art is important

*2015-09-14, version 3.9*

I agree with other reviewers when I say that there needs to be character customisation. Or, at least, don't show me a character I do not want to see. Either add character customisation or remove the character completely. Also, armour and other upgrades based on hours is a great idea. And currently, if I get enough coins (not hours, oddly enough) I can make my pale skinned peasant into a dark skinned ranger? How does that work?

Please, if you want to put in the time to make it better, please do. If not, just remove the whole character, leaving just the name.

### 4/5 — Come back, Mr. Slinker!

*2016-02-04, version 3.9*

Hey, this is a wonderful app, but I keep coming to the App Store looking for an update. As I'm logging more hours into my piano practice, I'd love more data. Graphs of different months, and how much time I put in. The ability to export to Excel. Stuff like that. Hopefully you plan to continually improve your app, because lots of people love it!

### 4/5 — Great idea, wish it was more.

*2015-10-31, version 3.9*

I downloaded this app over a year ago and used it for over a month. I remember thinking at the time it was such a fantastic idea but it really needed more things to buy and more customization options. I put it away and figured I'd come back to it later after a few updates. Sadly it looks like there aren't any plans to expand the app. It's a decent time tracker for your hobbies but sadly the RPG elements were never developed into anything more than a simple UI theme.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great design and make me efficient

*2016-09-19, version 3.91*

I love it !!! Def recommend it to anyone who wants to faithfully keep track of his/her effort.

Super user friendly UI design, very considerate features such as linear/log rewarding system, interesting idea of collecting candies :)

### 5/5 — Fun and addictive

*2016-05-09, version 3.91*

I am a gamer and I'm always looking for things to make my every day tasks fun. This app combines everything I love in an RPG with a task list for my every day life. It is very easy to use and fun for all ages.

### 5/5 — Life's a game

*2015-10-20, version 3.9*

This app is SO helpful. One of my main problems when it comes to getting things done is that my imagination runs away from me and I daydream more than I do my work. With this app, I get to work towards being an "Apprentice Scholar" (aka doing homework) and many other important life skills that I gave epic sounding names. I love love love it! The timer is super helpful! :)

### 5/5 — Great but I want more!

*2015-09-02, version 3.9*

This is a great app and I have really enjoyed using it. It has 'gamified' those mundane chores, daily tasks, and practice sessions and allows me to feel like I am 'leveling up'.
Some features that would really help is the addition of to-dos that are one time occurrences that I can check off. Also any additional items or quests or other game like features would only enhance the experience. But keep it up!

### 5/5 — Love it! Want more!

*2015-08-25, version 3.9*

I use this app for my language learning and it is incredibly useful and fun. We want more from you guys! The devs are really onto something! I bought the full version and I love it!!

### 5/5 — AWESOME!

*2014-11-20, version 3.6*

I love the concept, the UI, and the art! This app is the rules!

One request: It'd be really great if you can change when the day ends. I'm a night owl and midnight is just too early for me, so I end up missing some "dailies" and breaking a streak because I didn't check it off in time...

### 5/5 — Exactly What I'm Looking For

*2014-11-15, version 3.5*

This app is simple and aesthetically pleasing, easy to use and does exactly what it says. Every function works perfectly, the only thing I would ask for is more colors, and more classes, which I'm sure are coming. Implementing some kind of worldwide leaderboard would be really cool too, so people could view each other's stats and skills and whatnot. The Dailies feature is awesome, a step above the Level Me Up! application.

### 5/5 — Gamify My Skill Quests

*2014-08-28, version 3.0*

I’ll add my thanks to the growing list here. It’s a great idea and fun to keep track of skill habits this way. I played D&D as a kid and loved RPG video games. Even if you don’t have that history I think you should still give it a shot. More fun than Lift and others. I hope there will be “equipment” soon as right now it looks like there is none. Keep going guys! — Will, level 68 guru narrative therapist, level 50 sage guitarist, level 15 novice Brazilian jig jitsu.

### 5/5 — Childhood dream come true

*2014-08-25, version 3.0*

Ever since I was a kid I wished my life were more like an RPG. This app makes that possible. Whether it's leveling up my driving skill or tracking how much time I write, this app makes the tasks more rewarding than boring normal life. If only I could figure out a way to get my own theme music, my life would be complete.

### 5/5 — This app is what I needed!

*2014-08-25, version 3.0*

I have tried a lot of apps to improve or start a hobby and get better habits yet none have stuck. Leveling up and daily check this game offers keeps me intrigued and I can still do other things while it works in the background. Very easy to use and learn!
