## What is Rase?

Rase is rubber bridge for people who actually play bridge.

Sit South, pick up thirteen cards, and bid a real auction against three robots. Play the hand out. Score it the proper way — above and below the line, part-scores carried, honors counted, game and rubber bonuses where they belong. Then find out exactly how well you did.

THE GAME
A full rubber, scored the traditional way. Games, part-scores, vulnerability, honors, and the unfinished-rubber bonus if you stop halfway. The scorepad is always a tap away, laid out the way you'd write it on paper.

YOUR SYSTEM, NOT SOMEBODY ELSES
Choose American Standard 2/1 or ACOL, then set the conventions you actually play:

• Stayman and Jacoby transfers
• Minor-suit transfers over 1NT
• Weak or strong two-bids
• Blackwood — regular, RKCB 1430, or 3014
• Gerber, Landy, Jacoby 2NT
• Negative and takeout doubles
• Better minor or short club
• Attitude, reverse attitude, or McKenney signals and discards

The robots bid and defend to the same system you've chosen, so the auction makes sense from both sides of the table.

THE VERDICT ON EVERY HAND
When the hand is over, Rase grades it. A double-dummy solver — the same class of engine used to analyze championship deals — works out what was actually available, then walks your auction bid by bid and your play card by card, showing where you gained and where you spilled tricks. You get the par result, the trick-availability table, and a plain-English debrief. Replay any hand to try the line you wish you'd found.

HAND ARCHIVE
Every completed deal is kept. Come back to the interesting ones, reread the analysis, and replay them whenever you like.

LIVE SCOREPAD
Playing with real cards at a real table? Rase will keep score for you. Tap in each contract and result, and the pad handles the arithmetic — honors, doubles, vulnerability, all of it — with a running rubber timer and a history of past rubbers.

LEARN THE GAME
Built-in tutorials cover what rubber bridge is, how a hand runs, scoring above and below the line, defending doubled 1NT contracts, and what changes when you come to rubber from duplicate.

BUILT TO BE USED
• Works completely offline — on a plane, on the subway, anywhere
• No account, no sign-up, no ads, no tracking, no data collected
• iPhone and iPad, portrait or landscape
• Four-color cards if you prefer them
• Adjustable robot pace — brisk or unhurried
• Claim or concede when the hand is over

No chips, no wagering, no timers pushing you along. Just bridge.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.2 — 2026-10-05

Smarter bidding in competitive auctions, and a clearer Analysis.

COMPETITIVE BIDDING
• Negative doubles are answered properly, and read as six or more points rather than a takeout double's twelve
• Reopening and balancing doubles, partner's penalty pass or answer, and the doubler's rebid are all bid by the book
• A double of what they bid past our game is made when the values are there
• One-level responses over an overcall now find a legal suit instead of giving up, and no-trump needs their suit stopped
• A weak hand with four trumps answers a reopening double in partner's suit; a minor is no longer invited at the four level
• A double of their second suit after their no-trump is read as penalty, not takeout
• A weak two is opened on a ragged seven-card suit instead of passing

CARD PLAY
• A defender returns partner's suit instead of cashing a lone ace
• Monte Carlo only deals hands the auction allows, so the robots reason from realistic layouts
• Fewer silly underruffs when two cards are worth the same

ANALYSIS
• Pinch to zoom the deal, double tap to zoom in and out
• Graded from your seat: a sacrifice is priced against the contract they were really in, and a hidden hand still to play is not stated as fact
• Tap a robot's call and it tells you what the call means, not the hand it was made on
• Concede is offered only when no trick can still be yours

FIXES
• Replaying the hand that won the rubber starts a new rubber
• The iPad bidding panel is the right height, and Suggest reads properly in landscape on a phone
• The HCP badge stays clear of the panel in the landscape phone card

### 2.1 — 2026-09-25

The robots now bid over preempts — and against them.

BIDDING OVER PREEMPTS
• They double a three- or four-level preempt instead of passing it out: takeout with shape, a values double at the four level, sound overcalls, or 3NT. Before this they almost never doubled one, and passed out 17-counts with a singleton
• Answering partner's preempt, a strong hand no longer just passes: game on playing tricks, a game raise on a doubleton, a forcing new suit, or 3NT
• The preemptor answers those strong replies properly — and then leaves partner's later decisions alone
• When partner's preempt is doubled, they raise by the Law, or redouble with values
• Leaping Michaels: over a weak two, a jump to four of a minor shows that minor and the other major. Over a major preempt, 4NT shows both minors
• Cue bids over a major preempt: four of a minor agrees the major and shows first-round control, so slams are bid on controls rather than on points
• Both two-suiters are new convention switches, on by default in either system

ANALYSIS
• A card played in the middle of a trick is now graded against opponents who are free to answer it. A card they could never have punished is no longer charged a trick, and ducking is no longer priced two tricks better than winning
• Mid-trick positions are solved by the engine rather than reconstructed, so the grade agrees with the rest of the analysis

AT THE TABLE
• Undo sits beside Place call for the whole of your turn, and rewinds the robots' calls along with yours
• Third hand reads the auction before playing high or low
• Answering partner's takeout double is explained as a reply, not as an overcall

TUTORIALS
• The glossary is a list you can actually look a word up in
• The two screens the manual never mentioned are now written up

Plus a taller meaning card, and Diagrams rows that no longer stretch to the height of the screen.

### 2.0 — 2026-09-19

Diagrams: play any hand you can photograph, paste or type in.

DIAGRAMS — A NEW MODE
• Set up a deal by hand, choose your seat, and bid it out or play a set contract
• Photograph a hand diagram from a book, a magazine or a screen and Rase reads the cards on the device — check what it read, crop and zoom in, and read it again before you play
• Share a photo straight to Rase from anywhere in iOS
• Paste a deal as PBN, LIN, or a BBO handviewer link
• Give it a printed auction and Rase deals random hands that fit it
• Play a diagram deal with a part-score already on, and choose your own opening lead

HOME
• The home screen is regrouped around what you came to do, and a first-run guide walks a new player through their first hand

BIDDING
• Once an opponent overcalls your 1NT, the conventions over it stop being read as conventions — and partner's 3NT is left alone
• A double after your 1NT is overcalled shows the majors
• No more 3NT on a misfit opposite a weak two
• A suit bid over an overcall is a suit, whether or not you play negative doubles
• With nothing in the auction to go on, the opening lead follows the book instead of being invented

ANALYSIS
• A trick that got away is counted once, not once for every card that let it go
• The hint names the card the review will grade you against
• Three bidding reports corrected, and a sacrifice is no longer called good when it was not

IPHONE AND IPAD
• Landscape on a phone gets a bidding rail instead of a floating panel, and the compass table fits a narrow screen
• On a short screen the trick in the middle is sized against the room it actually has, instead of printing over the pills and the hand below it
• A short, wide phone gets its own layout, so the bidding record shows rounds of the auction rather than just its heading
• The felt runs under the status bar, and the card fan stays clear of the system's own furniture
• iPadOS 26's window controls no longer sit over the back button
• The app icon draws its own dark and tinted faces instead of letting iOS guess them

### 1.5 — 2026-09-14

Analysis that agrees with itself, and a saved hand that opens.

BIDDING
• With a part-score on, a raise that is already game now says so, instead of telling you that you hold six to nine points when you are looking at eleven
• A strong raise with a part-score on bids the game the score has already brought within reach, rather than opening a Jacoby 2NT enquiry that the pad had answered before it was asked

ANALYSIS
• When your seat took every trick it could and the table underneath still shows one more, the deal header now names the hand that trick needed — so a hand graded 100% no longer reads as short against the number printed below it
• A double-dummy search that fails now says so, instead of its error code being read as a trick count

HAND ARCHIVE
• A saved hand with no deal recorded says so, instead of sitting on "Analysing the play…" at nought per cent and never moving

### 1.4 — 2026-09-09

The whole rubber reviewed, and two bidding rules that pay for themselves.

RUBBER REVIEW
• When a rubber ends, a report on all of its hands at once: what the pad paid, how the bidding and the play were graded, what went well, what to work on, and a running record across every rubber you have played

BIDDING
• A six-card suit is rebid rather than sold out to, instead of handing over a part-score that was yours
• The cheapest no-trump is refused when the opponents have named a suit this hand cannot stop
