## What is RC Slate?

**RC Slate — the browser that opens your documents, built for people who work with AI.**

Tap a document link while browsing — Markdown, DOCX (Word), PDF, JSON, YAML, images — and it opens right there, rendered as a clean page. No downloading, no switching to another app, no wondering what a file looks like before you can see it.

**Convert anything to Markdown for AI**
Turn documents and web pages into clean, token-efficient Markdown — the same content in a fraction of the prompt size. DOCX converts through the app's own parser; web pages by pulling out the article text. Need the images too? Embed them into a single self-contained Markdown file, with quality presets and a live token estimate. Export any view as PDF, PNG, or HTML. (Markdown conversion is not lossless; full page layout is not preserved.)

**Read your Obsidian vault**
Add a vault folder and read it as it was written — wikilinks between notes and embedded images. Links resolve inside the folder you added, so a note opens the note it points to. And a vault note leaves as one piece: export it as a single self-contained Markdown file with its images embedded, or as HTML, PNG, or PDF — ready to hand to an AI. Reading only; RC Slate never edits or syncs your vault.

**A real browser underneath**
Documents are grouped by the site they came from. Switch any article to Reader Mode for a clean, distraction-free reading layout with dark mode. iPhone and iPad layouts, with a sidebar and tab strip on iPad.

**Clean pages for every format**
- Markdown with tables, syntax highlighting, Mermaid diagrams, and LaTeX math
- JSON and YAML: colour-coded, with their keys in the table of contents so you can jump straight to one
- DOCX (Word) page by page, view-only (the document's own fonts are not included)
- PDF and images

**Open files from anywhere**
Files on your device open from the Files app — or send a file from any app through the share menu, straight to RC Slate. SelfDrop syncs a file across your devices (up to 20 MB per file).

**Works offline**
Viewing local files works offline on your device.

### 1.1.2 — 2026-09-04

Tabs and menus now take keyboard shortcuts.

• Switch tabs from the keyboard: Control-Tab forward, Control-Shift-Tab back.
  The File menu has Show Next Tab and Show Previous Tab, and Command-L puts the
  cursor in the address bar.

• When the iPad app runs on a Mac, those shortcuts work there too, and Help is in
  the menu bar.

Sharing:

• A web page shared as a PNG now gives you the whole page, not just what fits on
  screen.

Saving and sharing documents got steadier.

• Exporting and sharing are steadier. If Save to Files cannot finish, RC Slate says
  what went wrong instead of staying quiet. The original file also shares from tabs
  restored after a relaunch, and from iCloud files that have not finished
  downloading.

Web:

• An address that genuinely does not support HTTPS now opens over HTTP. The address
  bar shows the connection you are actually on, and a real certificate problem still
  stops the page.

Also:

• The library moved to the right side on iPad.
• Menu and keyboard shortcut support when the iPad app runs on a Mac.

### 1.1 — 2026-08-18

Obsidian vault reading is now complete.

• Images attached to your notes now display — ![[image]] embeds, relative paths,
  raw HTML, size specs. Wikilinks ([[note#heading|alias]])
  were already read, so vault notes now open just as they look on desktop.
• Vault folders open as the folder tree they are — walk into subfolders instead of
  scrolling one flattened list. Search still covers everything beneath where you are.
• Images still downloading from iCloud show a placeholder and appear on their own
  once the download finishes — no reload needed.
• PNG, PDF, and section exports include those images. If some cannot be included,
  RC Slate says so before exporting rather than leaving silent gaps.
• Adding a folder starts at iCloud Drive — where vaults actually live.

Also in this update:

• Swipe any row to delete it — folders, favorites, recent files and addresses now
  behave the same way everywhere, and can be removed from the iPad sidebar too.
• Recent items open reliably instead of occasionally reporting the file cannot be found.
• Clear browsing data, and bulk-clear favorites, recent files, and recent addresses.
• iCloud sync status is now visible, and a sync failure caused by a missing field
  has been fixed.
• The address bar offers Table of Contents and Reader for the current document.
• On iPad, opening a folder no longer leaves it covering the document you open next.
• More tabs stay loaded, and a tab returns to where you left it instead of resetting.
• Fixes for relaunch failures, for tabs losing their files after the app's storage
  moved, and for interrupted document loads showing an error instead of retrying.
