## What is Reader?

Reader turns your EPUB books into spoken audio using the voices already available on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Import a book, press play, and listen.

There are no accounts to create, no books to upload, and no subscription required. Your books stay on your device, and playback works without an internet connection.

### 1.5 — 2026-09-05

Thirteen classic books, free, right in the app.
  • Free Classics. Thirteen great books with new cover art, ready to listen the moment you open the app. No account, no download, nothing to buy.
  • Your own books are easier to add. An Import ePub tile now sits in your library, so bringing in a book you already own takes one tap from the shelf. New here? The
  library points you to Standard Ebooks and Project Gutenberg, and About has a page on where to find books.
  • A fix for British English voices. The word highlight could stop in the middle of a long sentence and sit still for several seconds before catching up. It now keeps
  pace with the voice.
  • Chapter headings numbered with Roman numerals are read as numbers, so Chapter IV is spoken "Chapter four" instead of letter by letter.
  • Steadier playback. Skipping or changing speed can no longer end a chapter early or jump you somewhere you did not ask for, and the reader stays responsive while the
  next passage is being prepared.

### 1.4 — 2026-08-20

• The play and pause control no longer shows the wrong state after you skip or change speed. What the button shows now matches what you are hearing.
  • About shows the build number next to the version, which makes a support message easier to answer.

### 1.3 — 2026-08-16

Pictures, and a font that helps.
  • Illustrated books now show their illustrations, in place between paragraphs
    and sized to the page rather than stretched to fill it.
  • OpenDyslexic joins System, Serif and Monospaced in the font picker. It was
    drawn to make letters harder to mistake for one another, and it grows with
    your text size the same way the other faces do.
  • Books open faster, illustrated ones most of all, and the app stays responsive
    while a long book loads.
  • The page follows the voice more closely, and "Back to current" reliably
    returns you to the word being read, including when a full-page picture sits
    between you and it.

### 1.2 — 2026-08-10

Reader now shows a single banner ad above the text while you read - no full-screen ads, and nothing that interrupts playback. In the EU, UK and Switzerland you'll be asked once about your data; you can revisit that choice in About › Privacy Options.

### 1.1 — 2026-08-07

Words that read two ways now read the right way.

  "There was a tear in his shirt" and "a tear rolled down her cheek"
  are spelled the same and spoken differently. Until now one of them
  came out wrong. This release decides them by meaning, so tear, wind,
  bow, row, lead, sow, dove, bass and wound get the reading the
  sentence actually calls for.

  The work happens on your device while the next chapter is being
  prepared, so playback never waits on it and nothing about your book
  is sent anywhere. Requires an iPhone with Apple Intelligence;
  everything else in the app works as before.

  Also in this release:
  
  - Playback starts sooner. Each passage is prepared as it is queued
    instead of all at once.
  - Starting partway through a paragraph keeps the right pronunciation
    instead of resetting it.

  The word list is the real lexicon, not invented: bass, bow, dove, lead, row, sow, tear, wind, wound and their plurals.
