Readerly is an independent book discovery platform designed to help you track your reading, explore your stats, and discover something new. We’ve abandoned the sneaky algorithms and 5-star rating system to bring you book recs with more context. Here are a few things that make us different: NO 5-STAR RATINGS ON BOOKS We built Readerly with the intention of moving away from the aggregate 5-star rating system. Reducing a book down to 3.3 or 4.2 stars doesn’t tell you what you as a reader with unique tastes will think of it. Instead, we provide context with every review, showing you how much your tastes overlap with the reviewer, books you’ve both read, and topics you both enjoy. This way, you can decide which reviews resonate with you, and discover books you might have otherwise passed over! POPULAR BOOKS WON’T DOMINATE Whenever you take an action on a book—Save, Hide, or mark as Read—you’ll never see that book in your feed again. You can always find it in the corresponding tabs, but removing it allows us to make room for titles you may never have heard of or missed reading the first time around. READERS LEAVE GISTS, NOT LONG REVIEWS We’re replacing the traditional reader review with Gists. Gists are punchy, fun, easy-to-create slides that begin with a quick shoutline for your favorite books (just a sentence or two). You can add tags, character bios, favorite quotes, and similar books. You can also get creative with the “Read This…” slide, finishing the sentence however you like: “...if you’re in the mood for something light...on your commute...with a glass of pinot noir…” You get the idea. We only fill your feed with Gists from like-minded readers and people you follow so you can discover more books you’ll enjoy. The layout feels a little haphazard but I hope it gets better as the app develops over time, or maybe I’m just not used to it😆 ### 4/5 — Just what I need, but… *2022-10-10, version 2.0.3* I love to scroll through the perfect bite-size reviews, but I have yet to figure out how to see an entire gist. The longer ones cut off. Clicking on it just brings me to the book info. I really like being able to add my books to the “up next” list and the ability to change the order simply by dragging the book cover into a new position. ### 1/5 — Can’t get past the intro *2022-09-06, version 2.0.3* I’ve tried repeatedly to get past the intro or sign up, but can’t. It keeps taking me to a page that simply says “Let’s get more specific!” with nothing to click, and it won’t move past this page. Annoying. ### 4/5 — Almost perfect *2022-08-04, version 2.0.2* I really enjoy this app. Just a few things I’d like to see. 1. Transferring lists from Goodreads (it only transfers over your “read” books) - I would like the capability to transfer over lists as that’s how I keep track of my Library 2. Ability to edit mistakes in the book info - such as incorrect author spellings, other misspellings, incorrect book titles, and wrong or low quality book covers (perhaps having volunteer libraries like in Goodreads?) 3. Having start and finish dates on books 4. A chat function ### 5/5 — Great alternative to Goodreads! *2022-05-31, version 2.0.1* I love the simplicity of this app and now that they’ve added the ability to add dates and additional tracking it is becoming my go to tracking app. ### 3/5 — Some problems *2022-02-04, version 1.0.30* Really like this app and the style of it, however even with Premium, I cannot figure out how to mark books “currently reading” only read or DNF. ### 4/5 — So fun! *2022-01-15, version 1.0.30* I love the feature that I can see how likely I am to agree with a user based on what we’ve reviewed so I can find like minded readers. Although it doesn’t deter me from following other uses as well to be exposed to new books. The one thing I don’t love is that there are sometimes multiples of the same book, i’m guessing because multiple users have added the same book to the apps virtual shelves. This makes it hard to figure out which version is the one people often review on and I don’t want to look at multiple locations to see accurate reviews of that book. It’s a minor thing but otherwise I love the app, highly underrated. ### 5/5 — So good! *2021-12-05, version 1.0.30* I was avoiding trying this out but it has ticked all of my boxes so far. I’m still testing things out but this could easily be a front runner out of all of my different reading trackers ### 4/5 — Almost perfect!! *2021-11-02, version 1.0.30* I really like the details provided on the profile and I love how gists and takes work. It’s really fun to be notified when your thoughts are interesting to others and encourage them to save a book. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I really wish there was a list function of some kind. I’d love to be able to make lists of things like classics I want to get around to, books I’ve already purchased but haven’t read yet, comfort books, etc. I’ve gotten really into making all kinds of lists of movies on letterbox and I like to have something similar on Readerly. Being able to search and look through other readers lists would be so fun too! ### 1/5 — Select what you don’t like??? *2021-09-24, version 1.0.30* Have any of you read a design book? You break a design trend when it provides something to your user. This just makes them select the wrong thing when they use your app. And you didn’t have the same things available on the different select screens, only the dislike section had my favorite genre.
