## What is Real Friends vs the Other Kind?

“…even better than its predecessor. Is there any way to give a five-and-a-half star review?”—Lory Gil, Padgadget

Middle school social drama can flare up without warning and turn your world upside down. At times like this, you may wonder, “Who are my real friends?” Based on the second book in the award-winning Middle School Confidential™ series, Real Friends vs. the Other Kind follows Jack, Jen, Chris, Abby, Mateo, and Michelle from the first app as they forge friendships and navigate tough social situations. They run into relationship issues such as making friends, resolving disputes, and dealing with gossip, exclusion, and cyberbullying.

Written by teen expert and anti-bullying activist Annie Fox, illustrated by Matt Kindt, published by Free Spirit Publishing, and developed by Electric Eggplant, this graphic novel app enables readers to zoom right into the story world. The app puts decision-making power into the hands of readers, with interactive quizzes that test what a real friend would do in a given situation. With beautiful full-color illustrations and richly layered audio made up of movie-like sound effects and music, Real Friends will be a surefire hit with 8- to 14-year-olds (even those who don’t like to read!). As a bonus for parents and teachers, this app puts thought-provoking storytelling and solutions into the hands of teens who deal with tricky friendship issues every day. It will challenge teens to think about their friendships in new ways and encourage them to stand up for themselves and be more empathetic.

REVIEWS
“…Annie Fox’s series of graphic novels was cutting-edge in print—[but] even more amazing on the iPad! I am delighted to see the quizzes from the book included in this second app. These interactive activities can help young people integrate the important lessons from the novels into their lives. Electric Eggplant has really perfected an otherwise near-perfect series with this additional interactive content.”—Carisa Kluver, Digital Storytime
“Two thumbs up! This is a series not to be missed.”–Andrea Gardner, Applicable2U
“Who needs to pay $8 for a movie ticket, when you have the drama of middle school right in your hand?”—Lori Calabrese, National Children’s Books Examiner.com
“Will challenge teens to reflect upon their relationships and think critically about what it means to be a true friend.”—Mindy Douglas, Software Smoothie

### 5/5 — More please!

Did this with a student and she really liked it and wants to do more!

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2013-04-25, version 1.2.1*

This was a great tool to teach about friendships. The stories were relatable and the sound effects were just enough to make the stories come to life but still be cool for Middle Schoolers

### 5/5 — Great advice on tween/teen-friendly format

*2013-01-12, version 1.2.1*

This app addresses the most important issues encountered in the lives of middle schoolers. It gives them tools to deal with these issues and uses language and format that they understand. There are many resources available for parents. But for the first time I see a child-oriented app meant to guide and mentor putting themselves in their shoes. This was long due and a fantastic idea. I believe this app can actually help children going through the transitional period of puberty and also some teens.

### 5/5 — Middle school confidential

*2012-12-08, version 1.2.1*

This is a great role play activity for middle schoolers who are trying to navigate social situations. A printed script (available online) would be helpful for group members to read as others are looking at the graphics, which are fabulous!

### 4/5 — Good

*2012-08-28, version 1.1.3*

This app is good. It will teach kids about friendship. It gives quizes so you know if your son is paying attention.

### 5/5 — Cool app

*2012-05-13, version 1.1.3*

I am excited to try this with my 7-8th grade social teen class! The app hits on some key issues that my students have been dealing with. I like the stories and the quizzes will give great class discussion.

### 5/5 — Great app for social thinking!

*2012-03-23, version 1.1.3*

The focus on friendships and relationships in the comic strip book was very helpful for the middle school boys I worked with this week. We only worked through a couple chapters, but they're looking forward to the next chapters. I did like the quiz feature that is available after some of the chapters. The app is great as is, but some of my students struggle to read so the addition of text to speech would be something to consider in the future. Great app!!!

### 5/5 — Another perfect app for teens!!

*2012-03-19, version 1.1.2*

What a great app! Perfect way for teens to think about their own emotions and make good choices in life and in their social interactions! I don't have middle school aged kids, but I will use this to start discussion now to prepare them for future friendship issues. I love the added quizzes at the end of the chapters, so teens can practice and apply what to do in a given situatuion! I would highly recommend this app!!!
