### 4/5 — LOVE IT

*2023-10-29, version 1.4.5*

Great app, I have been using it over a month now, it’s great. One problem tho it’s buggy. Idk why. Every time i open the app and try to add something it starts bugging. It would kinda save my progress. However, i would just have to close the app and open it again for it to work. Which could be pretty annoying. Overall it’s a great way to save them memories.

### 5/5 — Insightful, motivating journal app!

*2023-08-10, version 1.1.7*

This thing has all the basics you expect from a fantastic journal app, and SO much more! I’ve loved the suggestion feature within home page widgets. Every day I get a meaningful and approachable suggestion to write about my life for future recollection. I also LOVE the For You tab. Once you have a few entries (especially if you import from another journal app), it’s so cool to see how the app brings up wonderful memories. These suggestions, plus the insanely powerful tag and search features, will make Recollect my go-to for journaling going forward!

### 5/5 — Hands down the best journaling app.

*2023-08-07, version 1.1.7*

I was using Day One for a while, it was ok, then I came across this app and it’s WAYYY better. The prompts are actually meaningful for example, it will save the names of people you’ve written about and give you prompts about those people in your life. You can add pictures and videos. You can set daily reminders to journal. You can customize your journal how you want. 10/10 journaling app.

### 5/5 — The best journaling app

*2023-06-02, version 1.0.3*

I’ve had other big name journaling apps for over a decade wanting to grow a habit of journaling. I’d write for a few days and then fall off. I was invited to beta test recollect and from the start it was a different experience. I enjoy journaling. When I don’t have something to say it gives me a smart prompt about someone I’ve mentioned before. Using context it can even ask clarifying questions about past events all done on device. This has been the best experience. I rarely review apps but this felt like it deserved the extra effort.

### 5/5 — Best journaling app!

*2023-05-16, version 1.0*

I absolutely love this app! It’s easy to use and navigate and the entry questions are so good! Some are easy and fun and others are deep and make you really think. I love how you can add pictures to an entry so when you go back on a memory there’s a visual that really takes you back. I really like how personal the app is like how you can create people in your life so the app adds them to entry questions. This app is just sweet and makes me actually want to journal and right about my life.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2025-06-19, version 2.1.8*

I went to use this, got the lifetime, which I want a refund for at this point because that was a waste of money. I can’t even upload anything from Day One. It crashes every single time I attempt this and iCloud sync doesn’t work either. Worse product in existence.

### 1/5 — Crashes - Go Journal is MUCH better

*2024-03-12, version 1.7*

Sorry but this app needs a lot of work still.

Ive tried evernote, go journal, diarium, dayone, etc.

Dayone works great but their fees are crazy. Not ever going to pay anyone a subscription!

This one had promise. Until it crashed on my M1. Also, yes it prompts you but it was never like other journals, i.e. easy to use. its weird.

Try Go Journal. They have it easy to use and single onetime (small) fee. Sticking with them. Uninstalling this.

### 2/5 — Disappointing

*2026-01-16, version 2.1.8*

Some functionality works, some - not so much. AI…? Not sure what it’s supposed to do outside of the stock iOS “what did you eat for breakfast today” type prompts. I’ve tried interacting via the supposed chat and gotten nothing but a small “AI cancelled”. I’ve tried contacting the dev but gotten no response. I guess if you’re looking for a (very) basic journaling app at an inexpensive cost, Recollect might slip by, but there are better options out there.

### 2/5 — Buggy, No Way to Contact Developers

*2024-02-08, version 1.6.3*

If the app worked as intended it would easily be 5 stars. But as of right now, I lost 90% of an entry, entries appear blank when loaded from the timeline, I can’t turn off the auto suggested entries, and more. I tried to reach out to the developers but the Help option in settings is disabled. At one point I went to their website (before it got this bad) and found a Patreon I think it was. It promised that you could pay $1 and get access to a discounted lifetime purchase. I did this and got a vague email in response. I tried replying to this email to contact them, but it’s gone unanswered. I ended up purchasing a 1 year subscription because I couldn’t find the promised lifetime purchase. So now I have a 1 year sub instead of a one-time purchase, bugs keep mounting up, and the dev seems to be unreachable, despite issuing updates here and there.

I’m frustrated because this app could be great, but the bugs and lack of support or contact info brings the whole thing down quick.

### 3/5 — AI in a journal?

*2024-02-28, version 1.7*

Nothing personal, I’m sure you worked hard on this project but by very principle I would never use an AI journal.

 Seems wrong on every level.

Nothing feels right about cozying up to your Journal to share your deepest thoughts with an AI bot.

I don’t know why people can’t see this. They think everything about technology is the greatest. But there is a dark side to it. And when the consciousness of the society and those creating the tech is not high enough technology can be a very dangerous game.

Few are willing to talk about this. The hive mind mentality of much of humanity, just follows in blind trust to what their tech gods and other so-called leaders put into their minds, without questioning.

I doubt this review will even get posted in this time of censorship of anything that deviates from the conditioned norm — but let’s see and if so, will anyone agree with me …?

I am giving you 3 stars not on the merits of your work, but on principle. And that 3 should really be a 1. I just wanted to make a statement that will likely fall on mostly deaf ears. After all you are a human being, and deserve to be treated with decency and respect.

### 4/5 — please update

*2025-09-30, version 2.1.8*

an awesome app, although badly in need of an update so that the ai works. on ipados 26 ai does nothing at all.

### 4/5 — Great app, Primitive in some aspects

*2025-09-04, version 2.1.8*

Its a great journaling app in that it syncs with the iCloud backend, can run on your phone, interact with local AI and all sorts of colourful ways to add to your journal with your location data, photo album. etc. But some things like Mood or ‘persons’ when adding them to the system cannot be removed/deleted or edited, leading to a stuck situation where I have a situation of two mood windows, or an incorrectly spelled name in persons… cannot be removed, they are there for the remainder of time. When opening some old journal notes, crash the app too. So a great app, just primitive in some aspects. 4/5 stars.

### 4/5 — A great app in need of refinement

*2025-04-16, version 2.1*

I’ve tried this on multiple different devices and all of them the UI is really buggy. I keep running into technical glitches that detract from the overall experience. The developer has been kind and eager to listen and respond to the community from what I have seen, and there is no data collection. I’m not giving 4 or 5 stars because at the moment I could not reliably use this as my journal, but I hope to soon.

### 4/5 — Fix an issue

*2024-10-31, version 1.8*

When I try to import my Dayone entries, it will show up in my journal. But when I restart the app, the entries that I am imported have disappeared. Can you fix this issue.

### 4/5 — Almost perfect

*2024-07-28, version 1.7.5*

Best journal app ever. Hands down. Unfortunately, it crashes consistently on my iPad. All the time….its too rich and complex to use this app on my phone. Is there a fix on the way? Last update says it addresses iPad crashes but that’s not the case here.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Beautiful app! Makes journaling easy.

*2025-12-30, version 2.1.8*

I love this app! It has so many little features that make it better than the other journal apps I’ve tried. I’m far more likely to stick with journaling now, and it’s easier to go back and see what I’ve written in the past.

### 5/5 — Aesthetically pleasing UI

*2025-04-08, version 2.1*

I really like the UI it doesn’t get in your way and puts you in a mood journal. Although some aspects of the UI is buggy, I’m sure a future update will fix it.

### 5/5 — It’s my favorite journaling app out there

*2024-03-27*

I’ve been using Recollect for a little bit now and I love it. It’s actually helped me stay consistent with journaling. There are a few bugs but the developers are always working hard to update and improve. The prompts are great and just the design is crisp and pretty. It’s simple yet so many features you discover as you continue to journal. Love this!!

### 5/5 — Journaling has never been this fun and easy

*2024-03-20*

This is way better than previous journal apps I’ve tried for so many reasons! It’s like having a conversation with a friend: the app helps prompt you with unique questions about things you’d never have thought to record. I only wish my grandfather had a journal like this. You have to try it to get what I mean, but the app makes journaling way more fun and simple. Which means I’m way more likely to keep up with it! Thanks for helping me secure these thoughts and memories before they are gone forever!

### 5/5 — Best journal on vision pro

*2024-02-26, version 1.7*

Love the interface. Audio video etc attachments and multiple journals. The prompts are useful and I love how you can organize your entries by the people in them

### 5/5 — Thankful!

*2024-01-28, version 1.6*

This app is so close to perfect! I’m a list maker and, I have to have things organized. I love that I can make several journals to organize my thoughts, store memories, create goals etc. I love the fact that I can easily attach people/places/tags to each entry which makes it so much easier when I’m trying to find entries related to specific things. Recollect seems fairly new and there’s some minor kinks to work out, but I can’t wait to grow with this app. ❤️

### 5/5 — Not normally a journaller

*2023-09-28, version 1.2.4*

I’m normally terrible at keeping a journal, but so far have really loved recollect. It has made it easy and convenient to write about not just the big life events that have occurred over the last few months, but recording fun little interactions / stories from the day.

I especially have loved importing my photos and being able to write down the context / stories behind the pictures!

Try it out for yourself, it really is an amazing app!

### 5/5 — LOVE THIS APP

*2023-08-29, version 1.1.7*

I love this app so much because of how easy it is to look at my past entries and how it makes me reflect on the things that I write about. It makes it super easy to just write a quick couple sentences each day. The interface is really helpful and it has so many amazing prompts.

### 5/5 — Favorite journal app!

*2023-08-14, version 1.1.7*

Journaling has become sooo important for me and this app makes it easy to do in the moment, and easy to get the benefits of looking back on things. I’ve tried it all: notebooks, photos, other apps. Recollect does it the best! It was incredibly easy to get started. My biggest roadblock was that I was already using another app. I was able to import all my previous entries from that app — even the photos — to quickly get started with Recollect. My favorite Recollect feature is the calendar view with photos on each day!

### 5/5 — An app focused on memories with people

*2023-08-13, version 1.1.7*

This app is people focused. It’s so easy to filter memories by people and even pets.

It’s a good alternative to other journaling apps. The one thing it is missing for now is an export tool, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it added the option in the future.
