## What is Red Box?

You are the new Chancellor of the Exchequer. It is September 2026, the removal vans have gone, the Treasury's first submission is on your desk, and the country owes nearly £3 trillion. Your first Budget is the real one: 28 October 2026. Good luck.

Red Box is a political strategy game about running Britain's economy, and about learning how it really works. Every month the red box arrives full of decisions. A Health Secretary wants winter money. A newspaper is on deadline. The backbenches are in revolt. A gilt auction went badly. Choose, and live with it.
EVERY NUMBER IS REAL
Debt near £3 trillion. Borrowing of £115 billion a year. Debt interest that costs more than defence. Every figure comes from the OBR, HM Treasury or the ONS. Tap the ⓘ beside any number to see its source, and collect all 287 facts in the Codex.

DELIVER THE BUDGET
Twice a year you stand at the despatch box. Take a Treasury package, or set every tax from nought to 99 per cent and every department's budget yourself. The scorecard shows what you raise, spend and borrow, and what your plan does in real terms. A flat budget while prices rise is still a cut. Push a tax past what the country will believe and the Prime Minister finds a new Chancellor. Then give the speech, read the front pages, and take the Finance Bill through the House.

MONEY DOESN'T WAIT FOR BUDGET DAY
Agree a pay deal in March and it comes out of the Treasury Reserve that day, just as it does in real life. The Reserve runs out. Sit across the table from the unions in pay talks. Say yes to everything and the gilt market starts pricing your signature.

CUTS HAVE CONSEQUENCES
Starve a department and its service starts to fail. The prisons fill, the waiting lists grow, and the trouble spreads to the economy. Only funding ends it.

EVERYONE IS SOMEBODY
Fifty-four characters are dealt into every job each run: the Cabinet, the Prime Minister, your advisers, every editor and every union chair. A different government every time.

FLEET STREET IS WATCHING
Seven fictional newspapers, each with its own politics and its own Treasury correspondent. They ring you for a line before they run a story. Give a statement, send in your Director of Communications, or say nothing and watch it run at full strength. Take an editor to lunch. Float a draft Budget and see what tomorrow's front pages make of it.

THE HOUSE, THE CABINET AND NO. 10
The division bell rings and you walk a lobby: aye, no or abstain, with the whips watching. The decisions you take send their own bills to the floor. Read what each one really does before you vote. Keep the Cabinet on side, or lose them to the leak columns. When your polling slides, the Prime Minister will want a word.

ANY PARTY CAN WIN
Pick the party that won and live with its manifesto. Labour, the Conservatives, Reform UK, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens, the SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Northern Ireland parties are all playable, each with its own pledges, its own Prime Minister and its own cards, all on the same footing. Elections come round every four years, and a hung parliament means a coalition with a price.

SURVIVE, OR DON'T
Lose the PM's confidence and you're sacked. Lose the markets and there's a gilt crisis with your name on it. Win elections with an economy worth defending. And if the Prime Minister becomes a liability, the party may come looking for you. A government can last twenty years.

MYSTERY CHANCELLOR
No party and no manifesto. Choose your constituency, govern for two years, and the game tells you whose side you were really on.

WEEKLY CRISIS
One crisis a week, the same for every player, with its own leaderboard.

Play at your own pace: hold the clock, or let the government run and step in when it matters. Playable with VoiceOver, at any text size, and without colour.

No ads. No subscription. No account needed. Sign in only if you want your name on the leaderboards.

### 5/5 — New fav game

*2026-10-11*

I’ve played this through a couple of times now, once as my chosen party and once as mystery chancellor (to see who I’d be most like with my choices - I was surprised tbh!) i love the level of detail and real-world scenarios, and the funny interactions with journos and cabinet ppl. I always play this on the tube as it doesn’t need WiFi either!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 0.662 — 2026-10-14

A new masthead on Fleet Street: UKFCP, with Mikey and Rusty at the desk. Every number you give the papers, checked.

The House finds its voice. Deliver the Budget and hear the benches cheer, jeer or murmur at every measure.

The App Store can now open the game straight from a Budget Day event.

Fixes.

### 0.660 — 2026-10-13

Budget Day is now a real event. The day starts on the steps of No. 11 with the photo call. In the House you read out your own measures, and MPs cheer or jeer each one. That night you see every paper's front page, one at a time, and the Prime Minister's verdict.

Your special adviser now gives real advice. Before a Budget they brief you on the whole position and recommend a course, and they judge your plan before you stand up. Before you deliver it you can test the water: run a private poll, or leak the draft to a paper of your choice.

When a journalist calls, the answers now address the question they asked. Every story has three answers written for it, and the reporter's reply appears on the next morning's front page. The Director of Communications names the paper and the headline, and his replies fit what just happened.

The tutorial and every briefing have been rewritten in plain language. The fact collection is now called Fact cards, and every card has a plain title. You can run the tutorial again at any time from the menu.

### 0.656 — 2026-10-10

Twice the game
• 830 cards in the red box, twice as many as before, so you meet far fewer repeats.
• New stories for every corner of government, from borders and the BBC to energy, defence, transport, councils, health, schools and the Bank.
• 91 big stories that unfold over months, from a third runway to a new submarine build.
• Follow-up cards that come back as fresh stories: a firm that collapses, a lender in trouble, a council's bad bet.
• 32 negotiations, 160 front pages, and five new interviews from the Sunday shows to a podcast.

Parliament answers you
• 54 votes in the House, three times as many.
• Votes follow your decisions. Every autumn Budget sends its Finance Bill, and a card can send a bill to the House.
• The Lords can send a bill back, and Opposition Days come when you are weak on that subject.
• The Westminster card shows the bills due next month.

A cast of real characters
• More than 50 characters, each with a name and a face. Every run deals them into the cabinet, No. 10, your advisers, the press and the unions.
• No two governments have the same table, and nobody else wears your face.
• Two familiar faces make a cameo, with their blessing.

Conversations that sound like people
• Every conversation with the Prime Minister, the cabinet and the press is rewritten as plain talk.
• The chat flows like one, and never freezes on the last answer.
• Twice as many lines from your comms director and advisers.

Every party on the same footing
• Every party governs with three pledges and three objectives on the Prime Minister's scorecard.
• A smaller party in government faces a real challenger at the polls.
• 78 new party cards, including the SNP, Plaid Cymru, Alba, Restore Britain and the Northern Ireland parties.
• Got a saved game? Your party's new pledges apply from now on.

Taxes from 0% to 99%
• Set any tax from 0% to 99%. Cut one to nothing and the markets judge the borrowing.
• Push a rise past belief and the papers turn, then the public. Then the Prime Minister sacks you.

Playable by everyone
• Play with VoiceOver: every lever, card and button speaks, and levers move without dragging.
• Text follows your iPhone's size, up to the largest accessibility sizes.
• Good and bad news never relies on colour alone, and the game respects Reduce Motion.

See trouble coming
• When your job is at risk, the game warns you and counts down the months.
• When something can't be done right now, the game tells you why.

Every ending, properly
• Every ending lands on the ending card, with your scores and your time as Prime Minister.
• Your record and past governments now say what happened in plain words.

Better Budgets
• Your first Budget is in October 2026, as in real life.
• Tax levers show what each tax raises today, and a dragged lever stays under your finger.
• Department levers can always go back to no change.
• Govern by direction delivers the Budget plan you locked.

Fixes
• Morning briefings are now a switch that turns reminders on and off.
• The title screen shows the whole red box again, and long labels wrap.
• Cutting VAT to 0% no longer jumps back to 15%.
• Taking back a huge tax rise no longer sets off a market crisis.
• Small moves read correctly: 1.2 shows as 1.2, not 12.
• Card costs, notices and the Register now agree.
• You should no longer be signed out unexpectedly.
• An unreadable save is kept safe, and you are told.
• Your photo stays on your device, out of iCloud backups.
• No more update offers when you already have the newest version.
• A smoother Budget Day, a faster game, and plenty of smaller fixes.

### 0.053 — 2026-10-05

TAXES WITH NO CEILING
Every tax rate now runs from 0 to 99%. Abolish VAT, scrap fuel duty, or take the top rate further than any Treasury has ever drafted. The lever tells you when a rise is unprecedented. What happens next, you find out by going there.

EASIER LEVERS
The range most Budgets live in now takes up most of the slider, so a 1p change is a clean flick, not a fiddle. A lever stays under your finger while the page updates around it.

35 NEW PARTY CARDS
The SNP and Plaid Cymru now have every kind of party card. Sinn Féin, the SDLP, the DUP, the UUP, Alliance, Alba and Restore Britain get their own for the first time.

FIXES
• The Cabinet tile no longer breaks across two lines.
• A small move on a standing or a newspaper's page now shows its size, not "0pp".
• The Mystery Chancellor envelope says "1 point", not "1 points".
• "The real story" button is readable over the breakfast-table painting.

### 0.051 — 2026-10-02

What's new in Red Box

MAKE IT YOURS
• Choose your own name, and a painted face or your own photo. Your photo stays on your device.

ELECTIONS THAT DECIDE CAREERS
• A well-run government can now win outright.
• Voters tire after years in power, and the opposition rallies behind one challenger.
• Governments now rise and fall at the ballot box, not on the calendar.
• A coalition partner stays the full term, unless you break its price.

EVERY PARTY PLAYS FAIR
• New party cards for every party: donors, backbenchers, members, heartlands, old records and flagship promises.
• 27 new cards for Labour, the Conservatives, the Lib Dems, Reform and the Greens.
• 35 more for the SNP, Plaid Cymru, Sinn Féin, the DUP, the SDLP, Alliance, the UUP, Alba and Restore Britain.
• Party cards now move your scores on the same scale, whichever party you lead.

MONEY THAT ADDS UP
• The price on every button is every pound that choice moves.
• A tax raised on a card is a tax, not a cut to a department.
• "For a year" now ends after a year, and long-running schemes keep their value.
• Pay deals cost only the rise above what budgets already allow.
• Every card's words now match what it charges.

CABINET, PRESS AND NO. 10
• Twice the conversations, in twice the rooms. People remember what you said.
• New moves: calm a dispute, ask for savings, spike a story, offer an exclusive, sound out the PM, or ask for cover.

CUTS HAVE CONSEQUENCES
• Cut a service too far and the trouble grows until you fund it.
• Departments squeezed in real terms dispute their settlements and bring you to the negotiating table.
• A sovereign wealth fund, and the debt rule counts what is in it.

AND MORE
• One-off stories are dealt once, then followed by new ones.
• A new front cover on the title screen.
• The game tells you when an update is ready.
• Plainer English throughout, and many fixes. The ending card no longer vanishes, and every score the leaderboard ranks is on it.
