## What is Reel?

Most recording apps feel like software. Reel feels like hardware.

Reel is a multitrack tape-style field recorder in your pocket. Record your hardware jams, capture ideas in the rehearsal room, a live gig, collect sounds out in the field, digitise your vinyl or catch the moment inspiration hits. Connect your interface, hit record and capture it before it's gone.

The disc spins. The transport clicks. Rewind ramps up the way tape actually does. Every interaction is physical, immediate, satisfying. Less time looking, more time listening.

THE DISC.
The large central reel is the heart of the app. Drag to scrub. Flick it and it spins with real momentum. Scratch it and it sounds like tape pulled across a head, wind and all. Nothing else on the App Store feels like this.

RECORDING.
This is what Reel is for. Record one track or all four at once. Punch in a fix, overdub on top, record in reverse or let a take wait and start at your first sound. Count in with the click or roll free with no grid.

QUICK RECORD.
Inspiration doesn't wait. Press the Action Button, tap the Control Center button or ask Siri and Reel opens already rolling.

FOUR TRACKS. REAL WORKFLOW.
Reel works like tape, not a DAW. Capture your whole setup in one take, up to four tracks at once from a multichannel interface. Then work the tape one track at a time: punch in a fix or overdub a new part without touching the rest. When all four are full, bounce down to one and keep layering. Reel is tape the way it works, not tape the way it sounds: the source lands clean and professional grade, ready for your DAW, sampler or a real tape machine.

THE LOOPER.
Set a length in bars and the take ends itself on the bar and loops. Hit record mid-loop and the next take waits for the top, records one pass and drops in. Build a song one layer at a time.

TEMPO AND BARS.
A metronome with any time signature, count-in, a visual beat and a bars timeline. The click follows the tape, even when you scrub.

CUE POINTS.
Drop a marker anywhere and jump back instantly. Name, reorder and preview them or play them from pads on your controller.

THE MIXER.
The mixer slides up over the reel. Per-track meters, level, pan, mute, solo, monitoring and input gain for record levels. Real fader feel, with haptics. Mixes save per project and print on export.

PITCH AND SPEED.
Speed and pitch move together, like tape. Lock the disc anywhere from quarter speed to four times or snap to real semitones. Record over a sped-up take, bring it back down and your new part plays deep and slow. It plays backwards too.

MASTER RECORD.
Print your performance as you play it. Arm it and it starts at the first sound: every stop, scrub and pitch move goes down live to its own recording. Resample the master straight onto a track and keep building.

MIDI AND ABLETON LINK.
Start, stop and record in sync with drum machines, samplers and grooveboxes. Map any MIDI controller to Reel's controls over USB or Bluetooth. With Ableton Link, Reel shares tempo and downbeat with Live and every Link app on your network.

WORKS WITH YOUR GEAR.
Plug in an OP-1 Field and it maps itself: 8 channels across 4 tracks. Plug in a Focusrite, Zoom, or MOTU and record at native quality up to 96kHz and 32-bit. Each track can flow out its own stereo pair, 10 channels into a real mixer. No drivers, no setup, no laptop.

No interface? No problem. The built-in mic handles voice, acoustic instruments, and room recordings, with Studio Vocal Mode to clean up imperfect spaces.

DJ MODE.
Flip the disc into a turntable. It slows under your touch, and pitch bends like a deck instead of a tape machine. Your recordings become the record.

YOUR FILES. NO LOCK-IN. FULL PRIVACY.
Export WAV, AIFF or M4A to your DAW, AirDrop, social apps or to the cloud. Import audio to any track, even from a video. Shares carry your pitch, loop, and mix, so what you hear is what you send. Organize with color-coded tags. Your sessions stay on your device or iCloud. No account required.

### 5/5 — TP7 but better

*2026-08-12*

This outdoes the tp7 by 100x. Bluetooth, louder volume, easier to understand controls, and sync ability is super easy to understand. Also allows any of my te devices to be Bluetooth with a speaker to be cable less. Bless up!

### 5/5 — TP-7 Alternative

*2026-08-11*

I was looking for cheaper alternatives to the teenage engineering TP-7 and this was recommended on Reddit. Using it for a few weeks I can say it is very close and in some ways better! Has some features that the TP-7 doesn’t, is always with you and the devs seem very responsive to user feedback. They also release new features and updates regularly. Useful app and excited to see it grow

### 5/5 — Reel has been fun to play with, even on vacation!

*2026-08-11*

I’ve rediscovered music production in the palm of my hand. Support from the developer has been wonderful! While I love recording to my Zoom H1, I always have my phone, but not fresh AA batteries. Reel is the real deal. —-and the MIDI triggering!? Enjoy!

### 1/5 — Not Working

*2026-08-09, version 1.5.1*

It not working, therefore it’s rubbish.

### 5/5 — Great App Continuous Development

*2026-08-05*

It's great to see this app be so supporter by its creator. I submitted a bug report via email -easy button click straight to him- and he responded very quickly with suggestions and having addressed my feedback.

Very helpful and looking forward to seeing where the app goes

**Developer response:** Thank you for supporting Reel and leaving a review! We are always happy to listen and improve on your requests and help fix any issues. Always feel free to reach out if you have any other issues.

### 5/5 — Recommendation no hesitation

*2026-08-05*

This is an app I would recommend to anyone who has an iOS device and does any kind of music production. It is super fun and intuitive. I just got done doing some digital 4 track to reel in and out via a single USB C cable which just feels crazy. Being able to sample, resample, mix down or anything in between using these two devices connected together feels like a wonderful gift. Thanks for making such a fun app.

### 5/5 — Genuinely great, one complaint

*2026-08-01*

Incredible reel to feel (intentionally misspelled) recorder.
Only issue is that it doesn’t seem to want to connect my headphones via usb. Can’t figure out what’s wrong.

But the recoding, controls, and overall FEEL of this app are all great. Makes me want to record.

**Developer response:** Hey,

Thanks for supporting Reel and glad you are enjoying it. Could you please send me a session log after trying to connect your headphone (go to settings > Feedback & diagnostics > email to developer) and I will look into this and get it fixed for you or feel free to contact me on support@reelaudio.app.

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2026-08-01*

Great app for recording and more wherever you are. Gorgeous UI, pro-hardware-level functionality, and the last update brought a slew of new features and upgrades. Worth every penny.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your review and support. Glad to you you're enjoying the new update!

### 5/5 — Was very good. Now even better.

*2026-07-30*

This app was already well designed and robust. And now the latest v1.5.1 update made it so much better. The features I hope exist and just try (double click the volume fader or pan knob to reset the position, automatically restore previous pitch, show pitch as semitones setting, etc) are a joy to discover. It inspires creativity and curiosity as I now just want to play around with it more, finding new ways to use it. Support the people who worked hard on this app. Stop thinking about it. Just buy it!

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the review! We will keep working hard at it and find new ways to continuously improve Reel! Really nice to hear it inspires creativity and invites for play! Thats a big part of what we are pushing for! Appreciate you taking the time and thank you again for the support!

### 5/5 — This app Bangs!!

*2026-07-24, version 1.1.2*

This is an insanely useful tool for me. I have a Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II. Definitely watch the YouTube video they have to understand what you are doing, but this is a great app to use your phone as an interface and also a solid resample method. What this essentially does is it gives you the 4 track tape you would have on a OP-1. I did find an issue with the Mixer screen but I reached out to the developers and they responded same day with a fix. (Note) the issue will be resolved on the update coming out in a few days.

I would recommend an ability to adjust the loop points after being set.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5.1 — 2026-07-30

Bug fixes for the 1.5 release.

The biggest Reel update yet. Reel is now a looper, a performance recorder, a MIDI-synced tape machine and it runs lighter than ever.

NEW FEATURES
- Quick Record: start a take from the Action Button, Control Center, Siri or a shortcut. Reel launches already rolling.
- Looper: set a length in bars and the take ends on the bar and loops. Hit record mid-loop and the next take drops in at the top.
- Reverse: play, record, punch in and loop backwards.
- DJ Mode: the disc becomes a turntable. Scratch it, ride it with your finger and pitch bends like a deck.
- Master Record: print your whole performance live to its own recording, starting at your first sound. Or resample the master onto a track.
- Wait for sound: arm a take and your first note starts it.
- Pre-roll: recording catches the moment just before you pressed Record.
- MIDI: start, stop and record in sync with drum machines, samplers and grooveboxes. Map any controller to Reel's controls with MIDI learn over USB or Bluetooth. Play cues from pads.
- Ableton Link (beta): same tempo, same downbeat as Live and every Link app on your network.
- New mixer: slides up over the reel. Per-track meters, level, pan, mute, solo, monitoring and input gain for record levels.
- Multi-output: each track flows out its own stereo pair with the master on a fifth. Ten channels into a real mixer.

- Bars timeline: read the tape in bars and beats, jump by bar, snap to the beat.
- Cue library: name, reorder, preview and jump between cues in every reel.
- Semitone pitch mode: detents, a readout and double-tap to snap to the nearest note.
- Tape start and stop: three machine feels. Studio, Deck, and Vintage.
- Import from video: pull the audio out of a video straight from Photos or Files.
- Duplicate a reel: make a safety copy or try a different mix.
- State-aware export: shares and bounces print your pitch, loop, and mix and stems print the same way. Bounces carry the project name.
- Sample rates: the picker shows the rate your hardware really runs and USB interfaces switch rates right from Settings, up to 96kHz if supported.

### 1.1.2 — 2026-06-22

A reliability update, focused on Bluetooth and single channel audio interfaces.

Bluetooth is rock solid now. AirPods and Bluetooth speakers play back cleanly. Recording starts instantly and connecting or disconnecting stays smooth.
Recordings now stay at full 48 kHz quality even with AirPods connected, instead of the lower quality Bluetooth normally forces. A big upgrade.

More USB mics and interfaces work as inputs too, including single channel mics.

Run into anything or have feedback? Email support@reelaudio.app. We read every message.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-06-11

Bug fixes:

• Fixed a freeze when stopping a recording with the Record or Play button, reported with the TX-6 and other USB interfaces.
• Overdubs and punch-ins that run past the end of the reel now stop cleanly.

### 1.1 — 2026-06-04

Dark mode. The whole app now has a full dark theme.

A reworked mixer. Faders move like hardware, and a double-tap resets a channel. Your volume, pan, mute, and solo settings now save with each project and stay put. Solo overrides mute, like a real desk.

Redesigned level meters. They read accurately across the full range, show when you're clipping, and move smoothly. The input meter is stereo now, follows the tracks you're monitoring, and stays live while you scrub, fast-forward, and rewind.

Better sharing. Multi-track projects send as a single .zip file and bounced or shared audio includes your mix.

Large Buttons. A new accessibility option in Settings that makes the small round buttons, like the mode (Cue, Loop, Pitch) and menu controls (In/Out, Library, Settings) bigger and easier to tap.

The Metronome is now called Tempo. The Inputs button is now called In/Out.

USB-C instruments and audio interfaces work better, including a fix for silent recordings on some devices. Mic switching with EarPods is smoother and the playhead no longer jumps to the end while scrubbing. Plus general stability improvements.
