## What is RefTake?

Play your voice recording and film yourself acting it out — all on one iPhone.

RefTake is made for animators who act out their shots — record your reference, auto-split it into takes, review, and export.

You know how shooting reference usually goes: your computer plays the voice recording while your phone films you, so you're stuck juggling two devices. Then comes the hunt for the take you actually want — back and forth through that one long recording, or endless digging through millions of short ones. And before it's any use, you're bouncing through another app just to get a format your 3D software will accept. RefTake pulls all of it into one workflow — just shoot, review, and export, all on the same device.

CAPTURE
- Drop your storyboard on screen while you film, and drag it wherever it's easiest to work from as a guide.
- Play your audio through the speaker or your headphones so you can hit your timing, blocking, and movement.

ORGANIZE
- Lay things out like a real production: project, sequence, shot.
- Tag and note your takes so you actually remember which was which.
- Keep your reference footage out of your camera roll — it lives in RefTake, separate from your family photos and videos.

REVIEW & RATE
- Auto-split one long recording into separate takes so you can flip through and find the keeper faster.
- Give each take 1 to 5 stars, and swipe or tap through them as you review — star the good ones and filter out the rest.

EXPORT & SHARE
- Export takes as MOV video or JPEG image sequences — any shot, any project, as often as you like, at full quality with no watermark.
- Name your exports however you work: project, sequence, shot, take, tag, and note — no more "IMG_####.mov" clips.
- Send them out through the share sheet, or save them straight to Files.

PRO — SPEED UP YOUR REFERENCE WORKFLOW EVEN MORE
- Remove the background and export PNG image sequences with an alpha channel — keep your reference simple and clear.
- Save your export settings as presets — set your format, delivery, and options once, and every export after that is one tap.
- Save to Project Folder: skip the share sheet and land every export in your production folder with one tap, correctly named.

PRIVACY & SECURITY
- Background removal happens right on your device — your footage never leaves your phone.
- Your projects and footage stay on your device. We don't track you or collect your personal data.

RefTake is free to download, and the free plan is the whole creative app, not a demo. Record, auto-split, rate, tag, organize, and review without limits — and export MOV or JPEG sequences from any shot in any project, as often as you like.

RefTake Pro speeds up your workflow: PNG sequences with alpha, saved export presets, and delivery straight into your project folder. Monthly, annual, or a one-time buy.

Built for animators — and anyone who works from reference.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.2.1 — 2026-09-09

What's New — RefTake 1.2.1

A new free tier: everything you do inside RefTake is free, on every shot. Pro streamlines your workflow.

The Active Shot is gone
No more picking one shot to export from and waiting 30 days to switch. Recording, reviewing, organizing, and MOV or JPEG-sequence export are now free and unlimited — every shot, every project, permanently. Any number of takes per export, at full quality, with no watermark, out through the share sheet or straight to Files.

What Pro covers now
Pro speeds up the steps that get frames into your 3D software: PNG image sequences, Remove Background for alpha PNGs, Save to Project Folder, and saved export presets. Pro controls stay visible in the export sheet with a PRO badge — tap one and it tells you exactly what it saves you, instead of hiding the feature. Prices are unchanged.

If you were on the free plan in 1.1.1, this is a trade: those four features used to be reachable on your one Active Shot and now need Pro, and in exchange the Active Shot limit is gone — MOV and JPEG sequences are unlimited across every shot and every project instead of one shot at a time. If you already own Pro, nothing changes.

Cleaner export filenames
Every exported name now runs through one sanitizer: spaces and control characters are dropped, characters your filesystem rejects become underscores, and long names are trimmed to fit. The export sheet's filename preview shows exactly what will land on disk.

Bluetooth audio
Disconnecting a Bluetooth headset could wedge audio system-wide — playback ran fast and an octave high, in Photos as well as RefTake, until you rebooted. RefTake now notices the route change and repairs its audio session on the spot, pausing playback first so the repair actually takes, and waiting for the take to end if you're mid-recording. Headsets also connect for output only now, so pairing one no longer drops the whole audio system to 16 kHz or takes over as the microphone.

Templates
Importing a template from Photos did nothing — the system reclaimed the transferred file before the app could copy it. The import now stages a copy immediately, and if it fails you see an error instead of a sheet that silently closes. Template Quality now says what it governs: the resolution of templates the app creates. Imported templates are copied through at their original resolution and never re-encoded, since the import is often your only remaining copy.

Fixes
• The export sheet no longer spins or shifts when the keyboard opens over its action bar.
• The export sheet dismisses cleanly after an export.
• Restore Purchases now says "You're Offline" when it can't reach the App Store instead of failing generically.
• The intro walkthrough no longer pitches plans, and Home no longer carries a plan row.
• Errors raised while the plus menu is still open are no longer dropped; they show once the menu closes.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-08-13

**What's New — RefTake 1.1.1**

*Buffer frames for every take, take names while you record, and a batch of accuracy and reliability fixes.*

***Buffer frames***
Play and export any take with extra handle frames on each side — 6, 12, 24, or 48. Tap the new capsule in the Take Viewer to turn it on, long-press to pick the size. The frame counter, progress bar, and looping all follow the extended range, and the export sheet carries the same lead-in and lead-out into MOV, ZIP, and image-sequence exports.

***Take names while you record***
The recording pill now shows the take you're capturing — "Take 7" — instead of counting overlay loops. With auto-delete first/last on, the loop that will be discarded reads "Warm-up," so you know it isn't being kept.

***More accurate cut points***
Take boundaries are now anchored to the moment the camera actually starts rolling. Previously every boundary landed about 300 ms late — roughly 7 frames at 24fps, 18 at 60 — so each take clipped the start of its action and ran into the next one. A take that ended near the stop point could be dropped altogether.

***Take numbers stay put***
Trashing a take used to hand its number straight back to the next recording, so restoring it left two takes sharing a name and an export filename. A number now stays reserved until the take is purged — trash Take 3 and the next one is Take 4, the way a production take log works.

***Faster take switching***
Switching between takes of the same reference video is instant. The picture stays live through the swap instead of blacking out while the player rebuilds.

***Fixes***
• Template exports no longer die when the screen auto-locks — and the progress overlay now reminds you to keep the app open.
• A take that runs to the end of its reference video loops again instead of freezing. In context mode that was every last take.
• Auto-Assign no longer suggests multiples of your first shot number: a template starting at "0560" now proposes 0570, 0580, 0590 instead of 1120, 1680, 2240.

***Also in this release***
• The takes capsule on Home's Active Shot row opens the Take Manager, matching the favorites rows.
• The quick-record bottom bar slides fully off screen when it hides.
• The Take Viewer tutorial covers the new buffer picker, and a slide pointing at a since-removed camera-settings control is gone.
