## What is Relay?

Two players write one sentence together, one word per turn. Each of you holds a secret word. Steer the sentence until yours fits naturally — play it, and if the whole thing still reads as real English, you win. But say your opponent's secret word, ever, and you lose on the spot.

Relay is a duel conducted entirely in one sentence. A turn takes about ten seconds: read the sentence as it stands, add one word to the end, and hand it back. Games run on 48-hour clocks, so a match unfolds in the gaps of your day — over lunch, in a queue, before bed — and most players keep a few going at once. Every word your opponent plays tells you something about where they are steering; every word you play risks telling them the same.

The trap is what sharpens it. Because saying your opponent's word costs you the game instantly, you can never test a suspicion by playing it — if you guessed right, you have just lost. So you block with meaning instead: steer the sentence somewhere their word cannot survive, and lay bait where yours is waiting.

Every ruling is made by the Judge, and the rules it applies are spelled out in the app — players and Judge read the same handbook. Words that would wreck the sentence bounce back privately, with a one-line reason. When you finally play your secret word, the Judge decides whether the sentence truly needs it or merely tolerates it, and shows its reasoning either way.

Learn against the Keeper, a two-minute practice opponent, then sharpen up against the House — both are judged on your device and work without a connection. When you are ready for a person, invite a friend with a code, or play someone new from the pool. Sign-in is automatic and anonymous: no account creation, no email, nothing to configure.

Every finished sentence is kept in the Museum, win or lose — the sentence is usually funny or eerie regardless of who won. Share any of them as a typeset card, with both secret words revealed.

No ads. No tracking. No analytics. Practice games never leave your phone. Made by one person who believes a sentence is a fine place to hide.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.0.2 — 2026-09-14

Invites are fixed.

Sharing a game now opens a proper share sheet with a working link, and tapping an invite takes you straight into the game — even if you had another screen open. Invite links also point somewhere sensible now, with a page that shows the code and opens Relay for you.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-09-06

Online play now works the moment you install the game — no setup, no sign-up.

If "Find an opponent" and "Invite a friend" were greyed out for you before, that was our mistake, and this update fixes it. Practice games against the Keeper and the House are unchanged, and still work with no connection at all.

### 1.0 — 2026-09-01

No release notes.
