## What is Relaymail?

relaymail keeps your OpenPGP private key where it belongs: on your
YubiKey. Tap to decrypt encrypted mail or sign outgoing messages —
your secret key never touches the phone.
WHY HARDWARE-BACKED?
Most "PGP for mobile" apps either don't decrypt at all, or copy your
private key onto the device. relaymail does neither. Every private-key
operation runs on the YubiKey itself: the app hands the ECDH (cv25519)
or RSA decryption to the card, which does the math and returns the
session key. Signing — Ed25519 or RSA — is also performed on-card.
Without the YubiKey in your hand, encrypted mail stays sealed and
signed mail can't be forged in your name.
KEY FEATURES
Decrypt and sign on the YubiKey: ECDH cv25519 + RSA for decryption,
Ed25519 + RSA for signing
Send encrypted and signed mail using your recipients' public keys
View and preview attachments — PDF, images, plain text, Office
formats and more, with the iOS share sheet for save-to-Files
and open-in-other-app
Paperclip indicator in the inbox so you can spot mail with
attachments at a glance
Multiple accounts in one app, plus a unified inbox across them
Auto-configuration for iCloud, Gmail, Microsoft, Yahoo and Fastmail
Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com accounts sign in with OAuth2 — no
app password needed
Web Key Directory (WKD) lookup to find recipients' public keys automatically
Auto-import of public-key attachments from incoming mail
Reply, Reply All and Forward with proper threading headers
(In-Reply-To / References) and quoted-original formatting
Swipe to mark read/unread, flag, archive, move to junk, or
delete — like the system Mail app
iCloud sync of accounts and imported public keys across your
devices, end-to-end through your private CloudKit container
Background fetch with new-mail notifications and an unread badge
on the icon
Address autocomplete from your iPhone contacts
Available in English and Spanish
WHAT YOU NEED
iPhone with NFC (iPhone 7 or newer), or iPad with USB-C
A YubiKey 5 NFC for iPhone, or a YubiKey 5C / 5C NFC for iPad,
with the OpenPGP applet provisioned
Email account credentials — iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo and Fastmail use
app-specific passwords; Microsoft accounts sign in via OAuth2
PRIVACY
Your private key never leaves the YubiKey. Period.
Public keys are stored locally on your device and (optionally)
mirrored to your private CloudKit container so a second device
sees the same keyring.
Account passwords are stored in iOS Keychain (synced via iCloud
Keychain if you have it on).
Your contacts are read locally for autocomplete and never sent
anywhere.
No analytics. No tracking. No third-party servers.
Built for OpenPGP users who don't want their private key on the phone.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.6 — 2026-10-03

What's New in 3.6
• Sign and encrypt together: you can now turn on both Sign and Encrypt for the same message. Your YubiKey signs it, then it's encrypted for your recipients.
• Signature verification: when you open a signed message, relaymail now checks the signature against the public keys you have and tells you whether it's valid, invalid, or made by a key you don't know.
• Honest about trust: if the signing key arrivedage, or belongs to a different address than thesender, relaymail tells you instead of showing a green badge.
• More reliable signatures: signed messages withoted replies no longer risk showing as "invalid"after passing through mail servers.
• Fixed the date and non-English subject lines osplay correctly in every mail client.
• Status badges on a message now wrap neatly instead of getting squeezed.

### 3.5 — 2026-09-27

What's New in 3.5

• Redesigned mailbox list: a cleaner, more compact layout inspired by Apple Mail. All inboxes, each account's inbox and drafts now live together at the top, with your accounts and folders grouped below.
• Clearer account setup: Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo and Fastmail now tell you up front that an app password is required, with a button that takes you straight to where you create one.
• Fixed replies where the quoted original message could appear cut off at the edges.
• Complete Spanish translation throughout the app.
• Better folder icons for Gmail folders like Sent, Starred and All Mail.
• Updated for iOS 27.

### 3.4 — 2026-05-14

• Smart Reply & Summarize — generate quick replies and bullet summaries with Apple Intelligence, all on-device.
  • Local drafts — save unfinished messages with one tap; cancel a compose with changes and choose Save Draft. Drafts live only on this device, never on the
  server.
  • Load remote images on demand — block trackers by default, tap "Load" per message or "Always for this sender" to remember.
  • Writing Tools & Genmoji in compose — rewrite, proofread, summarize selections and insert Genmoji.
  • Requires iOS 18.2. Apple Intelligence features require a supported device on iOS 26

### 3.3 — 2026-05-12

⏺ Two user-visible changes since v3.2:
  • Search messages in any mailbox — instant filter as you type, with a full server search when you hit return.
  • HTML emails are now easier to read in the dark UI: the message body renders as a light paper card, so rich HTML newsletters and
  plain-text messages both stay legible.

### 3.2 — 2026-05-09

• Sign mail with classic YubiKeys. relaymail now supports RSA signing
keys (RSA-2048/3072/4096) in addition to Ed25519, so YubiKeys
provisioned the GPG-classic way (gpg --card-edit) work end-to-end.
Signatures verify cleanly in Apple Mail, Mailvelope, GnuPG and any
    other OpenPGP-compliant client.

  • View, save and share attachments. Opening a message now lists its
attachments at the bottom. Tap to preview in QuickLook (PDF, images,
Office documents, plain text and more); the built-in iOS share
sheet handles save-to-Files and open-in-app. Inline images embedded
in HTML bodies and PGP signature/key files are filtered out so the
list only shows what the sender actually attached.

  • Paperclip indicator in the inbox. Messages with attachments now
show a clip icon next to the date, Apple-Mail-style. Detected from
the message structure during the inbox refresh, so there's no
    extra network cost.

  • Better YubiKey NFC reliability. relaymail now falls back to
short-form APDUs when reading OpenPGP card data, fixing a
SW=6A80 rejection on some YubiKey 5 firmwares that prevented
freshly-provisioned cards from being read over NFC.
  • Fixed signed/encrypted indicators in the inbox. The Signed and
Encrypted chips now light up correctly on received PGP mail
during the initial header fetch, instead of waiting until you
    opened the message.
