### 3/5 — no font size options for the feed?

*2024-01-11*

overall it’s okay but has simple zero features except for saving articles for reading later.

**Developer response:** Dear User, The version of the app you are using is 3.33.0 which is an old version. Would request you to update the app to the latest version from App Store or Play store.

### 4/5 — Don’t size too tiny for my young eyes

*2021-06-02, version 3.22.0*

This app is great for keeping up with new research, but the font size IS SO SMALL. Please allow the font to be changed with Apple’s built in accessibility feature or in the app itself. I’m under 25 and it’s too small even for my eyes!

### 4/5 — Need institution access for Chinese university!

*2021-04-23, version 3.21.0*

Hello, I have used Researcher for two years, but this app doesn’t have an improvement for Chinese institution access. I hope you can accept my advice!

### 4/5 — Should allow folders feature to organize the followed journals

*2021-04-11, version 3.21.0*

I followed a lot of journals, sometimes I want to see a particular journal I follow, it’s hard to find, I have to search it or scroll down for a long time to find it in the followed list. It will be great to allow the user to add folders or subjects to organize the many followed journals. Just like notability app, you have “all notes” page, you can also have “subjects” to organize different content.

**Developer response:** Dear User, we are happy to know that you found our app useful. We are continuously working on adding more features to our app to make your experience better and have shared your feature suggestion with the product team. If you need any support, please feel free to email us at info@researcher-app.com. Thanks, Maria

### 2/5 — Maybe I am missing something?

*2020-11-06*

From the reviews this app looks great and exactly what I need.

Unfortunately, my subject isn’t in the list (or I am not seeing it). I am studying my Masters in counter terrorism and cannot seem to find any journals that will help me. On initial start up, there is no option to look for journals in a crime category - If I select Social sciences, which I feel would be the nearest alternative - Nothing relating to crime or terrorism.

If I am at fault I would be happy to amend my review as it does look like an interesting app.

**Developer response:** Dear user, thanks for your feedback. I shared your concern with our product team and here is what they say:

There are around 20 journals where journal name contains crime:
 Journal of Crime and Justice
 Global Crime
 Crime Prevention and Community Safety
 Crime and Delinquency
 Crime and Justice
International Journal of Law, Crime and Justice
 Psychology, Crime and Law
 Trends in Organized Crime
 Crime, Media, Culture
Howard Journal of Crime and Justice
 Crime, Law and Social Change
 Crime Science
Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency
Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention
Sociology of Crime, Law, and Deviance
 Crime Fiction Studies
International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy
European Journal of Crime, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice
International Journal of Digital Crime and Forensics

And in terms of the subject areas you can see the following area:

 Pathology & Forensic Medicine
 Law
 Sociology & Political Science
 Cultural Studies

Research areas you can look for:
 Medical & Health Sciences
 Social Sciences & Psychology

If you select Social Sciences you then need to select any of the following:

 Law
 Sociology & Political Science
 Cultural Studies

Do let us know if this is helpful. If not, please write to us at info@researcher-app.com. We would love to hear from you!

Thanks, Maria

### 4/5 — Good tool to keep up with the literature

*2020-06-02, version 3.7.0*

It has all the necessary functions (filters, journal feeds etc) that help me see the recent publications in my area.

One problem I found is that the journal feed does not allow me to filter out “just accepted” papers from ASAP (as soon as publishable) articles. As least I did not find such a function.

The difference is that for most journals I follow, “just accepted” articles are pre-galley proof and they do not have TOC graphics, which makes them much harder to navigate through than ASAP (as soon as publishable) or already published articles. For some journals (for example, Agnewandte Chemie), the feed page is overwhelmed by “just accepted” papers without any graphics, and I find it really hard to read through all the tittles and abstracts without any graphics.

**Developer response:** Dear user, Thank you for your valuable feedback. We're sorry that you are facing this issue. This has been shared within the team and we will look into it. If we can help you with anything else you can contact us via info@researcher-app.com. Thanks, Maria.

### 3/5 — Needs cookies

*2020-05-01, version 3.7.0*

Almost every time I close the app, I have to log back in to my institutional access (which is extremely laborious due to my school’s requirements, including 2-factor authentication). My institution allows me to stay logged in for a certain amount of time if I check the option, but it says it needs cookies. This makes sense. But, why can’t the app use/save cookies so we don’t have to log in so much? It affects my desire to use or recommend the app.

**Developer response:** Dear user, thank you for bringing this to our notice and we're sorry you've faced this issue. I've shared this with our product team and we'll look into this. Thanks, Maria

### 2/5 — Reasonable start that needs improvements

*2020-03-22, version 3.5.0*

The goal is good—allow a user to search a choice of journals for keywords. The app works well to do what is stated.

Update March 2020: The app needs significant changes to be more than just a way to gather journal references. It currently cannot share the bookmark collections in any useable manner to outside databases, for example as RIS or BibTex reference sets. Not everyone wants to be tied to either Mendeley or Zotero. Its UI also does not allow the user to select multiple references for any type of action. So we can only clear bookmarks or move files one at a time. Try that over a few hundred citations that you want to handle efficiently.

The only reason I give this more than one star is that it has a search engine that crosses a broader set of journals than any other citation engine that I have seen.

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for the review and for your valuable feedback. We have noted this and will discuss this in detail shortly. Thanks, Joe

### 4/5 — How to share full-text

*2020-02-28, version 3.4.0*

Their is no share button in full-text view, how could we share the full text to say PDFexpert to make annotations?

### 5/5 — Great feed to stay on top of your field. Please add Sci hub

*2020-02-08*

Thanks a lot for the app!
I use it almost daily to monitor new research coming out across multiple fields. Filters by tag really help with that.
Integration with Zotero works really well, I can be sure I can find the bookmarked papers later.

Integration with Sci Hub would be great for those of us outside academia. :P

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for taking the time to leave a review, it's great to hear that you enjoy using Researcher. Unfortunately, SciHub is not a legal service so we won't be adding it to the app, but you can always look out for our Unpaywall integration. Thanks, Joe

### 4/5 — App is not updating

*2019-11-22*

I had good experience with the app. However, it’s been a week since I can update my app with the most recent publication. I’m wondering whether there is a bug with the app or something going on with the iOS compatibility. Please help me to resolve the issue since I’ve been heavily relying on the app to keep me updated everywhere I am.

Thanks.

**Developer response:** Hi, I’m sorry that you experienced issues with Researcher. The bug that caused the issues you were facing, have now been fixed. Please make sure that you have updated to the most recent version of Researcher. If you are still experiencing issues, please do email us at info@researcher-app.com. Again, sorry for any inconvenience caused. Thanks, Joe from Researcher

### 5/5 — Not updated?

*2019-11-21, version 2.16.1*

I wonder if it’s only me but the page seems to not update anymore. Any fix?

### 5/5 — Very convenient app for researchers

*2019-10-28, version 2.15.7*

I like it very much but it doesn't allow me to change settings of App notification. When I try to open app notification, it crashes. My phone is iPhone 7 plus with IOS 13.2. Please fix this bug.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — App comes back from death

*2023-01-27*

I eliminated the App some months ago, and it keeps coming back every time I turn off my cell phone or run out of battery like some zombie or virus.

### 1/5 — Can’t login?!

*2021-09-12, version 3.27.0*

On the last version it wouldn’t even stay open, it would immediately crash. On this update (3.27.0) it opens but I can’t login. It says “this account does not exist,” but my credentials are correct, I’ve had an account for years, plus still receive emails. It won’t let me send a password reset link either. It keeps saying “please check your internet connection” but my internet is working. So the app is still as useless as last update. :/

### 1/5 — Full text

*2020-08-02, version 3.11.0*

I used to really like this app, but now I cannot get the full text to work, when I click on it, a white page that says ”done” opens up, but nothing ever loads, and there doesn’t seem to be any other way to get to the articles any more. Also, I couldn’t find any way to contact support or help from within the app, so I’m leaving this review hoping to get my app to work again.

### 1/5 — Organizing journals

*2020-04-25, version 3.7.0*

I really want to love this app, with its clean interface and extensive catalogue. But with dozens of journals to follow, without the ability to organize journals into ‘groups’ (like browzine’s shelves) the app is useless to me. This is especially important for interdisciplinary researchers who need to follow literature from different communities. I hope the team will prioritize these features. Until then-back yo browzine.

### 1/5 — SO UNHELPFUL

*2020-02-18*

please tell me how i can sign up with my university email, verify my university email using ORCID, but this app does not have my university listed!! (The University of Winchester) it had other local uni’s listed, but not mine. and you click on the help button and it’s really no help. this seems like i could be a great app if i could only access it.

**Developer response:** Hi, I'm sorry to hear that you have experienced this issue when trying to sign up to Researcher. Our senior product manager would like to get in touch with you to resolve this issue as soon as possible, so could you email him at jonathan.cremers@researcher-app.com? Thanks, Joe

### 1/5 — Love the app, despise the interface.

*2020-01-27, version 3.3.0*

What I love:

The fact that I can keep up with a bunch of journals all in one place.

What I hate:

The interface is awful. It is slow. It freezes. The fact that to delete an entry I have to swipe AND then hit the X button, which is often when it freezes. I had switched to the desktop app because I could just hit an X and get rid of the things I didn’t care about but they’ve removed that feature from the desktop app. I tried the updated iPhone version again today and it’s as bad as it has always been.

What would make the app great:

Bulk delete, something that you can select edit and then mark everything you don’t care about for deletion. Smoother interface that doesn’t freeze. The ability to delete from the abstract screen would also be helpful.

Bottom Line:

If you like a quasi useful app that will occasionally frustrate you until you want to scream. This app is for you. When it works it’s great but it doesn’t work all that often or for very long.

Update:

I’ve discovered a wonderful new bug. Now the app recycles the same abstracts over and over again. While scrolling through my feed looking at article I noticed they were all looking similar. Many of the same abstracts scrolled past several times despite my swiping left on them earlier. I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled multiple times but no change.

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for taking the time to leave a review and for providing us with your valuable feedback. I have forwarded your suggestions on to our product manager who will investigate the potential of adding these to the app and website. In regards to the app being slow, this sounds like a bug, so please do email us at info@researcher-app.com so we can gather more information from you and investigate this issue.

Edit: Thank you for making us aware of this bug. We recently fixed this in our most recent update, so please make sure that you are on the most recent version. If this issue still persists, please do get in touch with us and we will investigate this further.

Thanks, Joe

### 1/5 — Filters don’t work

*2019-11-07*

It could be super useful app, and it has a nice UI, but basic functionality (keyword/key phrase search) does not work at all. Search returns seemingly random list of papers. Also neither app nor web site have support or feedback contact details. No option to reach the developer.

**Developer response:** Hi, I'm sorry to hear that you have experienced issues with Researcher and I'm also sorry to hear that you couldn't find any contact details for us. Please do email us at info@researcher-app.com and we will do our best to support you there. Thanks, Joe

### 1/5 — Really Disappointed

*2019-06-12, version 2.11.2*

I’m a undergraduate student that is pursuing graduate school. I was hoping this app might be able to keep me up to date as well as let me browse items relevant to my topics. However, every time I go to use the app, it sits on the loading screen for fifteen minutes until I decide my time would be spent better elsewhere. I was really excited to use this app and was severely disappointed that I could not use it.

### 1/5 — Wrong Orientation in IPad Pro 12.9

*2019-06-12*

Hi Guys. Just installed this. Looks promising. But it has the wrong orientation on my iPad Pro. I am using the apple keyboard case, so want it landscape, but it insists (even in the stand) of being the wrong way round. Makes it impossible to use. Hence the rating.

Happy to revisit the rating if you fix it.

**Developer response:** Hi, we just wanted to let you know that you can now use landscape mode on your tablet. Just make sure that you have updated to the most recent version. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at info@researcher-app.com. Thanks, Joe

### 1/5 — You don’t have a single journal from my field.

*2019-04-17*

This app doesn’t have a single journal from my field, Translation Studies. Everything is lumped together. Scholarly research is extremely specialized; it’s not because you have journals in Linguistics or Language that they will be relevant to me. I had to delete the app as soon as I downloaded it as I couldn’t add any journal to my profile.

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for your feedback. We do realise that academia is extremely specialised, which does make the whole process of grouping journals together. We do have a journal search option available which may aid you in the search for translation journals. Thanks, Joe

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — THE best scientific media aggregator I’ve ever seen

*2024-03-16*

Title

### 5/5 — Love this app a lot!!

*2022-12-11, version 3.35.0*

I love this lite but rather critical app! It changed my habit of reading papers and help build my daily routine as a researcher. However, sometime it is really hard to get connected. Could you please maintain it better? Many thanks!

### 5/5 — Wow!

*2022-10-20*

Revolutionary!! Best way to keep track of all your academic interests.
Suggestion: Include RSS add option.

### 5/5 — Love keeping up with the new journals

*2021-03-28, version 3.20.0*

Incredible app. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

### 5/5 — The updated app doesn't open anymore

*2021-01-19, version 3.17.0*

I like this app but unfortunately after I updated the app it stopped working

### 5/5 — Love the app

*2020-11-06, version 3.14.0*

I have been using this app only for a few days an I am loving it. Till now, I used to receive email alerts of newly published issues in my journals of interest, but since using this app it has been much easier to keep track of recently published papers in these and many other journals I was less familiar with.

As a suggestion, I would love to be able to see a section in the app with the “calls for papers” in special issues of the journals included in the app.

**Developer response:** Dear user,

Thank you for your valuable feedback. I have shared with the product team and we will consider your suggestion.

If I can help you with anything else, please let me know.

Enjoy reading and keep supporting us :-)

Thanks, Maria

### 5/5 — LOVE

*2020-08-07, version 3.11.0*

this app is amazing! No issues whatsoever.

Highlights: book marking ability, ability to put bookmarked articles into folders, using keywords and getting notifications for articles, I can read this like my twitter feed except less stress.

Would be nice if there was more citation options such as end note but I’m not too worried about that. Very few apps I’ve seen run this smoothly. And for free? Can’t ask for much more.

**Developer response:** Dear User, we are happy to know that you found our app useful. Please help us by spreading the word amongst your friends. I've shared your suggestion within our team and we will consider it. Enjoy reading and keep supporting us :-). If you have any feedback or suggestions, please write to us at info@researcher-app.com. We would love to hear from you! Thanks, Maria

### 5/5 — Latest Update

*2020-07-07*

It’s absolutely beautiful, the number of sources has also increased in recent months and their recommendations always make me curious and wanting to read the paper.

Well done and keep up the great work!

**Developer response:** Dear user, Thank you for your review. Enjoy reading & keep supporting us :) If you have any feedback or suggestion, you could write to us at info@researcher-app.com. We would love to hear from you! Thanks, Maria

### 5/5 — Brilliant App 🥳

*2020-05-25*

Fantastic app for keeping up to date on literature.

The app makes a social media style feed for literature making keeping up to date on your field habitual.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your review. Enjoy reading & keep supporting us :) If you have any feedback or suggestion, you could write to us at info@researcher-app.com. We would love to hear from you! Thanks, Maria

### 5/5 — A good one. Need some improvement

*2020-02-29, version 3.4.0*

It is a very good app. I love the function of institutional access. But it seems I could not open the article in Safari. There is no option to link out to safari to read full text. But sometimes I would like to share the PDF. Hope they improve this.
