## What is RetireSmartIRA?

Plan your retirement taxes like a pro — this year, next year, and across retirement.

RetireSmartIRA helps you model the tax decisions usually scattered across spreadsheets, IRS worksheets, and CPA meetings: Roth conversions, Social Security timing, RMDs, IRMAA, the ACA cliff, and more. It's built for the financially engaged: people who want to understand their numbers, not just be told what to do.

Use it for this year's tax planning. Use it to compare scenarios before you act. Use it to build a long-term Roth conversion strategy. No spreadsheets, no black boxes: every dollar traces back to the input that produced it.

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT ACTUALLY MATTER

• What will I owe this year? Estimate federal tax, state tax, NIIT, IRMAA, ACA effects, and withholding needs before tax time.
• How much should I convert to Roth this year, and over time? Build a multi-year conversion ladder instead of guessing year by year.
• When should my spouse and I claim Social Security? Compare claiming strategies across both lifetimes and survivor outcomes.
• Which year should I make a major charitable gift? Test charitable timing against Roth conversions and your projected tax bill.
• What does my family actually keep? Compare your lifetime taxes with what heirs may owe on inherited IRA assets.

MULTI-YEAR TAX PLAN

Stop guessing one year at a time. The Multi-Year Plan builds a Roth conversion strategy across your retirement horizon, then lets you choose how to convert: minimize lifetime tax, fill to a target tax bracket, or stay under a Medicare IRMAA tier. Compare the approaches side by side, with each one's effect on your taxes, Medicare surcharges, and heirs.

See the projected impact on lifetime taxes, ending IRA and Roth balances, future RMDs, IRMAA exposure, and inherited-account taxes. Model charitable giving (QCDs and cash gifts) to test the tax effect of when you give. Choose whether to focus on your own lifetime taxes or include legacy impact, adjust any year, review the assumptions, and export a CPA-ready briefing.

SCENARIO BUILDER: PLAN IN REAL TIME

Test Roth conversions, withdrawals, QCDs, charitable gifts, withholding, and Social Security changes before you act. One screen shows federal tax (2026 brackets), state tax (all 50 states + DC), NIIT, IRMAA surcharges, ACA credit and cliff risk, standard vs. itemized with SALT cap math, and taxable brokerage income, all updating instantly.

RETIREMENT DRAWDOWN

Project how your IRA and 401(k) balances spend down over 40 years: RMDs only, a target spending level, or a withdrawal rate. See when your income reaches the first Medicare IRMAA tier, and toggle between future and today's dollars.

SOCIAL SECURITY COUPLES PLANNER

Compare claiming at 62 vs. FRA vs. 70 for both spouses, with lifetime benefits, survivor protection, and a Couples Optimization recommendation.

RMD CALCULATOR FOR YOUR IRA AND INHERITED IRAs

Most calculators get inherited IRAs wrong. RetireSmartIRA handles RMDs at 73 (or 75 under SECURE 2.0), spousal inherited IRAs, the 10-year rule, and stretch options for eligible beneficiaries.

WHO IT'S FOR

• Anyone doing this year's retirement tax planning: conversions, withdrawals, charitable gifts, withholding
• Pre-retirees mapping out a multi-year Roth conversion strategy
• Retirees managing RMDs, IRMAA, and the ACA cliff
• Couples planning Social Security claiming strategy
• Anyone weighing their own retirement taxes against what they leave their heirs
• Federal/military households (FERS, military retirement, VA Disability)
• Anyone inheriting an IRA and planning the 10-year drain

ALWAYS CURRENT

Every IRS limit, HHS poverty guideline, ACA threshold, and Medicare bracket reflects 2026 values, updated as Congress changes the rules.

### 4/5 — Interesting

*2026-08-12*

A little hard to navigate and compare different scenarios

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review. Navigating between scenarios and comparing them is fair feedback and it is something I want to get right. If you have a few minutes to tell me what you were working on and where it slowed you down, I would appreciate it. support@retiresmartira.com comes straight to me.

### 5/5 — Detailed annual retirement contribution and tax decisions!

*2026-05-04*

Finally an app that helps you make detailed annual retirement contribution and tax decisions. I’ve used several other apps, always looking for something that would give me the annual big picture information I needed to make my annual decisions are IRAs, Roth Conversions, Estimated Taxes, etc in one place, not spread across multiple apps and screens.

I’m in my early 60s and married. I’ve used, and very much appreciate, tools like Boldin (New Retirement) that really help with long term retirement planning, but leave a bit of hole when trying to see the impact of competing financial decisions for a single year. The app uses sliders and graphs to help see benefits and tradeoffs of different amounts of contributions, conversions, and withdrawals as it relates to taxes. The Analysis section is detailed with good tips and detailed info. Very happy to find this app.

Developer is active and responsive to feedback.

**Developer response:** Thank you RP or taking the time to write this — and especially for naming the gap so precisely. You've described the design intent better than my own marketing copy: long-term planners like Boldin show you the multi-decade picture, but leave you stuck when you sit down in March needing to decide this year's Roth conversion, this year's QCD, this year's estimated tax payments.

Please continue to share your input and critical analysis to help make RetireSmartIRA better. Reviews like this and direct feedback to retiresmartira@gmail.com genuinely shape the roadmap.

### 5/5 — Just in Time!

*2026-05-02*

This app came along “just in time” for me. I was wrestling with some of the same questions it’s designed to answer —how to avoid tax bracket changes and Medicare surcharges while maximizing 401K and RMD withdrawals. It’s very comprehensive and easy to use. I love the scenario feature and the ability to see all the impacts and sources quickly. It even helped identify a flaw in a homemade spreadsheet I had made for the same questions. Thank you!

**Developer response:** Thank you Kaveat Emptor. I am so pleased you quickly found value and are now diving into scenarios to uncover more. Your input is invaluable to me, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any issues or opportunities RetireSmartIRA should address. Mt support email is retiresmartira@gmail.com. Thank you again and best regards - John

### 5/5 — Just what I needed!

*2026-04-21*

This app is terrific. Gave me insights and guidance I would not have clued into anywhere else. Best tool I have in the toolbox for retirement planning. Thank you!

**Developer response:** Thank you, GregorJames. “Best tool in the toolbox” is high praise — and it captures exactly what I wanted this to be: a focused, specific tool that sits alongside whatever else you’re using. If features or scenarios come up that would make it more useful, please let me know at retiresmartira@gmail.com.

### 5/5 — Outstanding RMD Planning Tool!

*2026-04-20*

On my 68th birthday, I began to consider the complex question of how to plan for the Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) which take effect when I turn 73. Having spent my entire career in the corporate world, nearly all of my savings are from my 401(k) and a lump sum pension; these have been rolled into IRAs and are subject to RMDs. The RetireSmartIRA app is an easy-to-use tool which enabled scenario modeling to quickly assess the benefit of Roth conversions to reduce the impact of the RMDs. In only 30 minutes, I modeled several scenarios and had answers to my questions! The app is very comprehensive and I highly recommend it for anyone who would like to develop a strategy to minimize the impact of RMDs and future tax payments.

**Developer response:** Thank you, BGK58 — this review made my day. Your situation (career in corporate, 401(k) rollovers, planning ahead at 68 for RMDs at 73) is exactly the scenario I had in mind when I built this. If anything’s missing as you work through different conversion strategies, I’d genuinely want to hear about it at retiresmartira@gmail.com.

### 4/5 — I love this App!

*2026-03-20*

I would love it one star more, if it printed reports!
Great app!

**Developer response:** Thank you, Dr. Williams! Did you know the Tax Summary screen already generates a PDF you can print or share? More reports are on our roadmap — we'd love to know which one would be most valuable to you. Visit retiresmartira.com/support to share your suggestions!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.5.1 — 2026-08-16

2.5.1 What’s New:

• State tax figures updated to published 2026 amounts in nine states, which can move projections in either direction
• State tax credits now shown where they apply, so the math on screen matches the total
• Maine and Alabama calculations refined against their published forms
• Each state's comparison page now shows its verification date

### 2.5.0 — 2026-08-14

• Multi-Year plans: enter your own wages and pension income for any future year, per spouse, including one-time amounts
• State tax accuracy: retirement exemptions are now applied per spouse in the 16 states whose laws work that way
• New state calculations for Vermont, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Hawaii and North Carolina retirement exemptions and credits
• New pension questions where your state needs them: who funded the plan, and Bailey settlement vesting in North Carolina
• Expanded model information for multi-year projections

### 2.4.2 — 2026-08-12

Accuracy Improvements

Updated state tax calculations for Delaware, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland and Wisconsin to match each state's published 2026 figures and age requirements. Some projections may shift in either direction as a result.

Expanded the per-state accuracy pages so you can see what is and is not modeled for your state.

### 2.4.1 — 2026-08-10

State Comparison now applies each state's own rules to a pension earned elsewhere, correcting the figures shown when you compare where to retire. The in-app accuracy page has also expanded: it now shows the tax year for every state, publishes verification dates and source links for 28 states, and names more of the situations the app models approximately.

### 2.4.0 — 2026-08-07

Your state tax result now reflects the kind of retirement income you actually have, rather than treating every pension alike. Kansas, Massachusetts, Arizona and the District of Columbia have updated treatment for government, military and survivor pensions, and you can identify your pension type in Income Sources.
Every state also has a new accuracy page showing what the app models for that state and tax year, and what it does not yet capture, so you can see how your number was produced.
Required minimum distributions now identify which spouse they belong to throughout, and numeric fields place the cursor at the end of an existing value.
