It would be great to be able to customize that! ### 5/5 — Fun motivator *2022-10-01* My kids love the thrill of putting a star in its place, hearing the sound effects, and seeing glitter! This has really helped motivate my 4 and 6 year old for homeschooling and other tasks. It’s a simple, helpful tool. We like that we can make multiple star charts for multiple people. When we finish a chart, we have the option to make the same one again (archived charts). Unfortunately, the app frequently freezes up and needs to be closed and reopened. I also wish there was an option to easily clear a chart. We like to give prizes for stars earned each week and then start fresh the next week, but there isn’t a simple way to do this. But you’ll spent $5 a month if you want to track more than one goal or person. Not enough functionality to really use for free. **Developer response:** Important clarification: "Unlock Stellar" is a *one-time purchase* to unlock multiple simultaneous charts forever. We have 8 different things they can do to earn a prize. (They need to do 10 of one thing to get a prize.) Since I can only do a total of 24 charts as a total and not per child, this app will NOT work and I will be requesting my money back. Otherwise it looked like it would work. But each kid needs to be able to get stars on all the good behaviors we have. I’ve been looking for a way to track points for my kids without wasting paper/stickers/etc. My two suggestions / requests are 1. We could choose our own amount of stars instead of only 7, 10, 20 etc. 2. If we need to edit a chart, please let us change the amount of stars needed as well, and not only the title and pledge, instead of having to delete the whole chart and start over. Because Stellar helps me change my habits, so that I actually USE the calendar and the to-do list. And write down my ideas. And take action instead of being indecisive. It is life-changing. With Stellar, I have the power to implement any change I want and make it stick. GET THIS APP. (I use it for myself, not for my kids, so all claims are for an adult with their own phone using the app to improve their own life.) I have backgrounds in both psychology and design, and I can tell that the developer has either really done their research or they’ve iterated to empirically find what works. Or both. For example, the sparkle animation when a star is awarded may seem unnecessary, but it actually serves as a visual reward, reinforcing the desired behavior. You can use this app however you want, and it will probably still help you, but if you want to know how I use it, read on. Here’s what I do: 1. I use only one sticker chart, and I keep it going at all times. When I finish it, I make the new one immediately, and I get a sticker for doing that. (What? You don’t deserve a sticker just for making a new chart! Yes, I do, because the habit of using this app is the foundation of my productivity, so I reward actions that keep that foundation strong.) 2. Every time I do anything that aligns with who I want myself to be, I immediately give myself a sticker. Every time I do a behavior that I want to reinforce, I immediately give myself a sticker. Every time I finish something that I would normally procrastinate, or even if I start working on something I’d normally procrastinate, or if I do something that I would normally resent but that needs to get done, I give myself a sticker. All my stickers go on the same chart. 3. When I make the new chart, I choose one identity-based intention and write it in the top space (the title). Examples: Action oriented. Decisive. 4. For the subtitle, I write a sentence that I would like to have be true about myself, about the physical behavior that shows the identity I am cultivating. For example, for “action oriented”: “I do it now because the ‘better time’ I’m waiting for doesn’t exist.” Or for “decisive”: “I sense what I’ve already started to do, and I just do it.” 5. Whenever I give myself a sticker, I watch the sparkly animation, and I celebrate the behavior that earned the sticker. I also read the title and subtitle, and I reaffirm my intention to become that person. (It takes longer to describe that to do—it only takes a second to do. And of course sometimes I’m in a hurry and don’t read, and sometimes I’m in a bad mood and don’t really celebrate that much. Don’t worry, it still works.) 6. Even though I only have one chart, I still get a sticker for any behavior that matches an identity or habit I am cultivating. This way I focus on one thing for a while, and I get a big boost on that thing, but I still improve everything else as I go. 7. I give myself a “prize” for each completed chart. (Stellar keeps track of all your completed charts, so I just delete them as I use my prizes.) I’m super motivated by getting stickers, so prizes aren’t really necessary anymore, but when I first started, I based my model on my kids’ sticker chart, and I think it is helpful to have a tangible reward for all those stickers, even if I don’t pay much attention to it day-to-day. I use the prizes to solve a different problem: I often feel guilty when I spend money on myself. If I notice I’m not buying something that I really should just buy, I use my prizes to buy it. (I give myself $1 per completed chart.) Or sometimes if there’s a big purchase that I’d never be able to justify buying (like a set of 90 artist quality markers), I save up prizes for it. This works for me, but please find something that works for you. IMPORTANT: When I teach this method, I’ve noticed that people want to give themselves a sticker only when they’ve accomplished something big. The sticker is not a reward for accomplishment. It is a reinforcer for the behaviors that lead to accomplishment. Be generous with your stickers. Reward any tiny behavior that aligns with the identity you are cultivating. For example, let’s say you’re writing a book, and the identity you’re cultivating is “author.” You can give yourself a sticker when you finish a chapter (accomplishment), but you should also give yourself a sticker for sitting down to write, and for continuing to write when you get an impulse to check email, and for jotting down an idea at a random time during the day. Reward any behavior, no matter how small, that supports your desired identity of “author.” Catch yourself doing what an author does, and give yourself a sticker. Wow, I just realized that by training myself to use this app properly, I have inadvertently trained myself to be kind and positive with myself. I’ve been wondering why the inside of my head is so pleasant these days. I used to beat myself up all the time and agonize for hours over every mistake, but I hardly do that anymore. I think I’ve changed my internal experience by using Stellar to focus on rewarding the positive. GET THIS APP. Use it to cultivate the identity you want. In a couple of years, you’ll be amazed when you realize that you don’t even think about wanting that identity anymore because you just live it and enjoy it every day. P.S. What if you’re not that consistent about giving yourself a sticker? Will it not even be worth trying? No! The opposite is true. Once your brain has learned that it will be rewarded for a certain behavior, inconsistent rewards are actually MORE effective for reinforcing that behavior. (This is called a variable schedule of reinforcement.) So even if you forget to use the app for a while and then go back to it, that’s actually still helping you build the behavior. 🎉 P.P.S.
