## What is RhythmForge?

Most metronomes just count. RhythmForge listens back.

Play along to the click and the app hears every stroke through the microphone. You see each hit land early or late, by how many milliseconds, and after the session where your timing held and where it drifted. Rushing or dragging, you'll know which.

HOW IT WORKS

Practice: turn on listening, play, and watch the timeline. The metronome plays one subdivision, you play another: eighths over a quarter click, triplets, offbeats.

Challenges: pick one, set your tempo, play. Every beat is scored across six tiers, from Perfect (within 10 ms) to Missed. Consecutive Perfects build a combo. Your best score is kept with the tempo you set it at.

Learn: can't play a challenge yet? Learn plays the notes the click doesn't cover, steps back as you lock in, and ends once you've played enough clean bars. Then start the challenge for real. Learn is free, costs no energy and saves nothing.

60+ challenges: rudiments (singles, doubles, paradiddles, rolls, gallops), grooves, world rhythms (tresillo, son clave, rumba, cáscara, mozambique, bossa nova, samba, baião, bembé), compound and odd meters, tempo ramps and silent bars.

WHAT YOU GET

• Live feedback on every stroke, measured in milliseconds
• Rushing and dragging per session, timing spread, beat distribution
• Assist: playing a different part than the click and lose it for two bars? The click steps back and your notes play until you're back. Those bars stay out of your accuracy
• Tempo ramp and ghost measures (silent bars, the clock keeps running)
• Per-device latency calibration, with AirPods drift corrected as you play
• Works with a practice pad, snare, hand percussion, claves, djembe
• 20 to 360 BPM, every standard subdivision, accents, odd meters
• Hold the tempo to type it, tap it, or slide a ruler
• Dark design, true black for OLED

WHO IT'S FOR

Drummers and percussionists practicing on a pad, a snare or hand drums. Guitarists, bassists and producers who want tighter time. Students and teachers.

It isn't a drum-kit transcriber: it doesn't tell toms from cymbals. It grades your time, not your kit.

Privacy: your audio never leaves the phone. Timing detection runs on-device. Analytics are anonymous.

Requires iOS 17 or later. Microphone access is needed for timing feedback.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.9.0 — 2026-11-03

Learn a pattern first.

• Learn: under every challenge's pattern, a Learn button plays the challenge with no score. Where the click doesn't cover your notes, Assist plays them from the first bar until you're in, and a line under the progress shows whether you're rushing or dragging. Once you've played enough bars in time in a row, Learn tells you how they went and where your best stands, and Start challenge is right there. Learn is free on every challenge, costs no Energy and saves nothing.

• Sticking: the rudiments show which hand plays each note, R and L under the notation and under the timeline as you play.

• Small fixes and improvements.

### 1.8.0 — 2026-10-20

More room to play.

• More room to play: in practice mode the tempo ring folds into a strip at the top as you scroll, so the timeline gets up to four rows, and nothing hides under the controls on an iPhone SE. A status line says whether it's ready, counting in, listening or paused, and tells you when the room is too noisy to hear you.

• Your timing as you play: a word says how steady you are (Locked, Steady, Drifting or Erratic), and the line beside it shows whether you're rushing or dragging, and how much. After the session, Internal Pulse uses the same words, and arrows replace the hare and the tortoise, with rushing always on the left.

• Surface ringing: if the table under your phone rings after each hit, the mic hears a second hit. Practice mode and challenges now tell you once, so you can put the phone on something solid.

• Assist: when you play your own subdivision and the pattern slips for two bars, the click steps back and your notes play until you're back in. Those bars don't count toward your accuracy, and the session shows where Assist was on. Switch it off under I play.

• Type or tap a tempo: hold the tempo to open a sheet where you can type it, tap it in rhythm or slide a ruler. Holding no longer starts tap tempo on the ring. The sheet has its own Tap pad.

• Ring gestures: turn the ring's edge to fine-tune 1 BPM at a time, or tap the edge in rhythm to set the tempo. Hold the arrows to keep going. Ring gestures, in Settings and in the Practice screen's menu, lists them all.

• Small fixes and improvements.

### 1.7.0 — 2026-10-02

Any tempo, honest progress.

• Play any challenge at any tempo, 20 to 360 BPM. Tempo ramps scale to match, and Reset names the tempo the exercise was written at.

• My Runs: tap your best score on a challenge to see every run — your 3-star tempo ceiling, tempo against score, and how you're improving at the tempo you play most. Every best score now says the tempo it was set at.

• 25 new challenges: rudiments (Double Stroke Roll, Double Paradiddle, Seven Stroke Roll, the gallops), exercises that score the silence (Backbeat Only, Offbeats Only, Count the Rests…), two new ghost variants, a waltz, a strum, compound and odd meter (6/8 Feel, Bembé Bell, 7/8 in 2+2+3) — and a Brazilian corner: Samba Surdo, Teleco-Teco, Partido Alto, Baião. And in 6/8 or 12/8 you can count the tempo in dotted quarters, accent the bar in groups of three in one tap, and read the eighths beamed in threes.

• Time signatures count the way they're written: 12/8 reads 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a under the beats, and the ring swings with it. Changing the time signature keeps the notes at the same speed, so 4/4 at 120 becomes 6/8 at 80 in dotted quarters. 2/2 can count in halves or quarters.

• A clearer challenge screen: see what the metronome clicks, how far a ramp climbs at your tempo and how many bars go silent, and tap Ramp or Ghost to see how it plays out.

• Accents you can see and hear: on the Practice screen each beat stands as tall as its accent, groups sit apart, and the beat that clicks lights up. Tap a beat to change it. A speaker next to Accents plays the click, and one next to My own subdivision plays your part over it, four bars before you start.

• Tempo Ramp and Ghost Measures show under the tempo while they're on, and as you play they show the next step or the silent bars coming. Their settings now say what each one does and show the climb, or which bars go silent, before you apply.

• A tighter library: Sixteenth Note Rush, Slow Burn and Endurance Test folded into Single Strokes and Steady Beat, Accelerator into Speed Builder and Hemiola into 3 over 2. With free tempo, one challenge covers them; your runs are kept.

• Small fixes and improvements.

### 1.6.0 — 2026-09-17

Never wonder what to practice.

• Practice today: tap the sparkle on the Practice screen for a free practice pick and a stack of challenges worth your time — where you left off, a score to beat, something you haven't tried. Play one, and it recomputes.

• A suggested challenge at the top of the Challenges tab, ranked from the whole library. The sparkle walks the ranking; the die rolls something different.

• Search the whole library by name, tag or modifier, and sort by Most Played.

• Modifiers say what they did: cards show the tempo climb and the silent bars up front, and every session ends with a summary — 88 → 104 BPM, 7 of 31 bars silent. Stopping mid-climb now returns to the ramp's start BPM.

• Practice reminders speak to the week you're in.

• Small fixes and improvements.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-09-08

Show up, and the app remembers.

• Your streak: one session a week keeps it alive, any day, any length. Watch it grow on the new flame, and open the month view to see every week you showed up.

• A weekly goal, if you want one: minutes per week, in any mix of days. Reaching it turns the week gold. Missing it never touches your streak.

• The History tab is now Activity: your streak and practice time up top, twelve weeks of bars with your goal line, and a day-by-day grid.

• Optional reminders: a gentle nudge on your practice days, and a heads-up on the last day of the week when a long streak would otherwise end.

• Small fixes and improvements.
