### 4/5 — Very cool

*2023-09-27, version 3.1.5*

But only 4 channels… any chance to have it with 6 channels?

### 3/5 — Ableton Link not working

*2023-06-05*

Nice tool. But unfortunately Ableton link ist not connecting.

**Developer response:** Ableton Link should be working flawlessly. Come you please check if both devices are on the same network?

### 4/5 — Easy on the ear, hard on the eyes

*2022-10-10, version 3.1.4*

Riffer when tweaked in the right way can produce some useful results. There is a weeding of the chaff from the wheat process, but that it be expected with generative stuff. The main problem is that this developer has the eyes of an eagle, and seems to think everyone else does too. The controls are ridiculously small and fiddly to use. So a redesign to something a little more chunky would be marvellous.

### 4/5 — The Dog’s Bullocks!

*2022-08-29*

A great tool to find a creative spark. I use it in every project. I use this on both iPad and iPhone. AUM is the host. The small UI is my only complaint (especially on iPhone). The font size is too small for my old eyes. -1 ⭐️

The font/icon sizes need to be bigger. Or you could make long pressing an area give a zoomed view.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback! We’re currently working on various UI corrections. Stay tuned!

### 3/5 — Disappointed

*2021-11-04, version 3.1.2*

Unfortunately neither this or Chordjam are compatible with Nanostudio 2 it would seem.

### 4/5 — One of the better generative sequencers

*2021-09-25*

It‘s good. There are quite a few options to control what‘s happening when generating a new sequence, which really help getting good and interesting results.

The user interface is well made and stuctured in a way that makes sense.

But I miss the option to use an external midi clock signal with riffer?!

### 5/5 — Very cool app

*2021-09-24, version 3.1.1*

Really adds something special to your audio tracks. Lots of options and the infinite mode is great.

### 4/5 — So good...but.

*2021-01-27*

Let me start with the good points.

This would be a 5 star app, all day long.

I purchased the bundle, that also included Playbeat, and have to say although I had reservations whether I needed both of them, it soon proved a great buy.

Creative wise, I cannot fault either app. Both are easy to use, and they’re great for starting an idea and fleshing out some sounds, that I then bounce down to use as samples.

All of that being said, the problem for me...I can hardly see what I’m doing on both apps, as I’m using an 8 plus iPhone, and well...to say that parts of the gui are small, is an understatement.

Now I appreciate most may use these apps on iPad, but to have such difficulty using them on a smaller screen, is an itonic point, I never forseen!

I just feel that maybe the apps could have been designed with a scrolling split option, for the iPhone, so not to make it so problematic to navigate around the apps.
I totally understand this may be a slight disadvantage for workflow use, but currently using both of these apps is a drag on that anyway, due to not being able to clearly see what I’m doing.

EDIT:

After writing this original review, I decided to contact Audio Modern, the developer, regarding my issues with the app.

I have to say their response was almost instant, and they were so great and also very understanding of my concerns.
They went above and beyond assisting me, and have promised to look into and hopefully find a fix for the problems I pointed out with my interaction with the app.

So until the app is fixed, I can only offer the 4 stars. However, for customer service, it’s a definite 5!

### 5/5 — Works with iRig Midi 2

*2021-01-24, version 3.0*

I use this to generate midi notes for synths in my Akai Force. Connected using iRig 2 Midi and works perfect. The app is awesome, much to learn and there are good YouTube tutorials. Overall easy to use and I was playing my synths and making tunes right away.

### 5/5 — Loving the update so far.

*2020-12-13*

Still lots to explore but this update is a game changer for Riffer, it is far better than it used to be.

I have found a bug however which is pretty annoying, when the note grid is limited to two notes ( c2 and c#2 in my case), randomizing riffer causes a bug and crashes the plugin, it won’t die but it stops working and reacting to UI changes. It also raises the DSP on both apematrix and AUM from 0 to 99%.

### 5/5 — Like update. Some request

*2020-12-13, version 3.0*

Each plugin instance shows the same set of presets. Why not make option to store multiple patterns (or presets) for a specific preset? This would significantly change the workflow into much more usable side.

### 5/5 — Good but it misses opportunity to play chord !

*2020-12-08, version 3.0*

Good but: Nice improvement, but in polyphonic mode we cannot see all the notes

### 4/5 — Solid no cost update!

*2020-12-08, version 3.0*

Very well played with these new features - game changer!

### 5/5 — My favorite app just got better

*2020-12-08*

The 3.0 update has taken Riffer to a whole new level. The density function adds so many more rhythmic possibilities. Having 4 Riffer instances in one with tuning, velocity, duration, and density capable of being randomized independently or all together gives me an amazing amount of control over just how random everything gets. I already use this app on nearly every single thing I create. I cannot recommend Riffer enough!

### 5/5 — Лучший!

*2020-12-07, version 3.0*

Спасибо, Audiomodern! Пожалуй это один из лучших midi генераторов! Обожаю его!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Limited Options

*2025-02-25, version 3.1.6*

Thaie is a very good app. Sadly the developer appears to have prevented it working on Mac OS - it used to. Now forced to spend $100s on desktop versions of the same apps.

### 1/5 — Unusable in Cubasis 3

*2023-04-07*

All most recent versions. Fresh install of both apps. Riffer actually skips steps in the patterns the user creates. Whacko playback. Submitted the problem with a screenshot and video to Audiomodern and they responded that ‘it must be because I’m in loop mode’. Then they told me they can’t duplicate it. Then they told me there are no problems reported in cubasis. 1 - if there have been no problems reported, then they wouldn’t know it’s because of loop mode. 2 - it happens with both loop enabled or disabled, so the reason they fired back isn’t actually a reason. 3 - a software company can’t fresh install an iOS and 2 programs to try to duplicate a problem on a machine in 30 seconds, which is about how long it took them to respond to me. So they didn’t actually try to duplicate the issue in any effective way. Cubasis users beware, Riffer and the support offered behind it seems to be pretty sketchy, and I can’t say it seems completely honest. I’ll happily update this if Audiomodern owns up to the b.s., Makes Riffer usable and apologizes, but until then, it’s a no-go. UPDATE 1: Audiomodern’s response: “…ask for a refund in the App Store”. Given the non-existent ownership of problems and proper support, I’d stay away, folks. UPDATE 2: Check their response. My tech assistant is on their forum, and now they have decided to make accusations of ‘multiple accounts’ on their forum, playing police with IP addresses. To the apparent detectives at Audiomodern: don’t play police poorly. Instead, work on your software and try some honesty. Many professional composers have assistants who (gasp!) work in the same studio, on the same ip address ;) When professional user calls you out for not putting any time into reviewing or resolving a problem before sending a refund request, nobody’s being rude to you. Calm yourselves. Do your work. Tone policing, pointing fingers, and accusations, rather than develop, develop, and develop, is useless. Sad. Stay away folks. If I get a proper apology and they get their software working, perhaps I’ll update again. I don’t expect much at this point. Probably best to stay away if you’re a professional and not a typical hack.

**Developer response:** Hi Terbano, I personally handled this ticket and while I was indeed able to test everything in less than a minute as you say, I found that nothing was wrong with the setup and sent you a video showing the correct playback behavior. I did ask to learn more about the loop mode as this was a hot topic back in the Cubasis forum.

When a problem arises, we will work to track it down, fix it, and improve the overall performance of the app so that you have a pleasant experience at all times.

However, I politely offered to help you get a refund from the App Store not only because of your negative, disrespectful and rude attitude but also for noticing multiple accounts on our forum that were created by you using different names. A search of the forum logs revealed that the IP addresses they were registered with matched those of a single computer on your desk.

Please move on, I am sure you will find something that you will enjoy more from another developer.

### 1/5 — God forbid an $8 app would have legible labels

*2022-12-18, version 3.1.5*

The general accessibility and usability of auv3 plugins is a horror show, and this UX is openly hostile to the eyesight of phone users.

It’s exactly the same for all their other apps, they should be pulled from the App Store until basic accessibility compliance has been addressed.

### 1/5 — Needs Multitasking

*2022-09-02, version 3.1.4*

This app needs to support Split View.

### 1/5 — Will not open on iPad.

*2021-09-28*

Very disappointing.

**Developer response:** Please make sure you have updated to the latest 3.1.2 version.

### 1/5 — Text too small

*2020-10-04, version 2.4*

Looks promising, but the text on an iPhone 7 Plus is basically illegible.

### 1/5 — Poor coding

*2020-06-26*

It would be good it it was coded right.

**Developer response:** Hi, could you please let us know what is the issue exactly? We’re here to help!

### 1/5 — Broken On iPhone 11

*2020-05-22, version 2.3*

When a project is reopened Riffer becomes a grey box and cannot be used or reloaded.

Same glitch in Cubasis3 and NanoStudio2

### 1/5 — Fix the clock drift!!!

*2020-02-10, version 2.0*

Awesome app when the Dev fixes the midi drift issues, 2018 IPPro AUM normal clock sync (not link)

### 1/5 — Can’t see in iPhone

*2020-01-24, version 2.0*

Don’t bother if you have an iPhone. You can’t see anything except the henerated notes. How do I get a refund on this?

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Excellent! The best Balance of custom and generative. Recommended!

*2025-12-19*

I have several apps that randomly generate notes for you, but it’s always hit and miss with regard to useable composition.

With Riffer, it generates excellent sequences nearly every time. And, another thing that sets it apart is that the sequences are editable and you can draw in notes manually. You can lock down specific characteristics to keep, while randomly generating others. You can even set it to infinitely generative sequences and pick what you like from it. And then export a midi file.

It’s also completely useable on a small iPhone SE screen, though the controls are a bit small.

Highly recommended!

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback, your pleasure is our reward. We are working on updating the small controls for iPhone users as updates roll.

### 5/5 — Absolutely love it

*2024-12-30*

Riffer is the perfect mix of control and randomness to create some truly great sounding music, not just completely random bleeps and bloops…although it’ll do that if you so desire. It’s let’s to give over control when you don’t want it, but then take it when you do. It’s the first thing I plug in when starting AUM. It’s always the launch point.

(Also, THANK YOU for not going subscription.)

### 5/5 — Get i0S bundle- best suite available, imo

*2024-09-15*

Get this as a standalone or get it included in the extremely generous iOS bundle which includes: loopmix, Playbeat3, riffer, chord jam, freezer. The big 4 (excluding freezer) is a sequencists fantasy with 5 dedicated sequencers in each instance of Riffer, you can make it ever evolving and ensure that no sequence loops twice, unless directed.

It’s true the UI is kinda terrible, and prevented me from going forward with the bundle, but after a minor tweak was made, it made the UI scale properly when resized so it’s not impossible to use.

I am very happy with Riffer, and AudioModern in general for such a quality bundle. I use the apps daily and without issue. I have grown to appreciate the UI as it is standardized across the suite AND LEARNING 1 APP, teaches you how to use all of the bundled apps.

You can also score Riffer solo and build up toward the bundle at your own pace. AudioModern has us covered.

### 5/5 — Отличное

*2023-09-07, version 3.1.5*

Спасибо , ваш генератор max for live очень помогает. К сожалению не нашел как купить из россии , но хоть тут можно поддержать

### 5/5 — Another great app

*2023-08-10*

I love that it has iPhone support , this bundle gets more use than any other bundle I’ve gotten , and Riffer is amazing to use on iPhone when I’m experimenting and “noodling “ to later bring a track to iPad,

### 5/5 — Worth the money, could use one huge feature

*2023-04-03*

This is a super fun tool to use when you’re wanting to play. As a “quantized” sequencer it can make some super cool and interesting Melodies that are awesome to sound design to.

One thing I hope the devs add in the future is nudging the notes or even the entire melody. I make a lot of sloppy beats and the only issue with this plug-in is the shuffle is mediocre at best.

Even still, you can pull the midi out and move things on a sequencer like Drambo how you want but navigation on an iPhone isn’t the funnest experience.

Maybe a note edit tab would do the trick where you can set each one’s timing along with pitch bend or other misc midi things.

Other than that; still would recommend^^

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback and your suggestions. Your satisfaction is our reward.

### 5/5 — Riffer is fabulous

*2022-10-27*

This app is fabulous. And thanks for fixing the MIDI settings in the plugin.

### 5/5 — Winner

*2022-04-27*

Pure inspiration, modular inspired and sooo melodic. Essential for musicians that are looking for a good foundation of notes to get writing. 10/10 sparks random joy.

### 5/5 — Polyvalent

*2022-03-01, version 3.1.4*

### 5/5 — The interface really helps turn randomness to musical results quick

*2021-09-26*

The ability to lock certain elements, keys, ranges, steps, notes and randomize makes this one of the top 3 randomizers I’ve used..and I’ve used easily over a hundred from Max devices to iPad apps.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your kind feedback, Enjoy!
