So pixilated, the darker scenes are a bit hard to see. It’s hard to appreciate all the wonderful scenes. Wish they’d given it the real myst treatment. It would’ve made the game a whole lot cooler. ### 3/5 — Love the game, video frame rate much lower than original *2023-11-24, version 1.7.0* I reinstalled my old copy of riven on a VM, and noticed the FMV frame rate on this version is maybe half of what it used to be. Really hurts the experience of the maglev rides and some of the puzzle animations which I used to love the details of back when this came out in the 90s. Of course that’s reason why it came on 5 CDs back in the day, but it would be nice to see the higher frame rates again. ### 2/5 — Yeah, it’s Riven, I guess... *2022-02-03, version 1.6.0* I don’t understand how after all the years I’ve had this game for iOS, Cyan Worlds can’t do the right thing and fix the stuttering, grainy videos. This is a 25 year old game and this fix is somehow still a mystery? If the company had any credibility, they’d pull this game from the store until it is in a presentable state. ### 2/5 — Bad video quality *2020-08-03, version 1.5.2* Riven is one of my favorite games of all time, but this version is just disappointing. I have encountered a lot of video segments that either have out of sync audio, a lot of missing frames which makes everything stutter, or really low resolution. Just like other gamers, I played Myst back when it came out in the ‘90s and playing the iPad version of it over the last couple of days, I was expecting the same from Riven, NOT! I gave up playing after about 5 minutes. Why couldn’t they have kept the same movement pattern as Myst? I wish I could get a refund as well. This iPad version is amazingly good although, as others have said, the resolution is not quite as good and some of the movements are jerky. Still, it is more than adequate. I also concur with some of the remarks of others who have said that it is the best adventure game ever; at least I have never seen/played one better. Myst was great but Riven is superb. Some of the puzzles are extremely challenging, but fair. This is an extremely absorbing and immersive game experience-very, very addicting! This production for iPad is also a great bargain- I seem to recall that the original PC version cost somewhere around $50 new in the 90’s. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Awful *2024-10-05, version 1.7.0* The graphics quality is shockingly bad. Considering the quality hi res versions that were originally rendered as part of the game dev, it’s pretty bad that they are now charging good money for low res pixelated rubbish. Was a great game once. Now dissappointing. Deleting. ### 1/5 — Stuck with an open journal, and no way back *2022-04-21, version 1.6.0* I explored Myst many moons ago and wanted to try Riven on my iPad. Got five minutes into wandering around this super cool world and made the bad decision to open the journal. After reading all of the entries, I could not “close” the journal and return to Riven. I tried tapping, touching, swiping, pinching but the journal won’t close. The help section offers no help. Maybe I’m stuck in the Prison Book but I thought that was stolen when I arrived. ### 1/5 — Not even close to the original *2021-12-02, version 1.5.2* At least when I played on the pc, I could look around. This is no more than screen shots. Not a shred of 3d. I should have bought realMYST. I own both games from my PC days but cannot play them anymore. What a disappointment. Instead of the smooth visual exploring experience, where you can see pretty much all vantage points fluidly, this has just N, S, E, W (and maybe up?) views that you toggle to using arrows. Also, when I found a letter and clicked on it, the image was pixelated! Agh!! Very disappointing. Waiting for realRiven to come out (hopefully!). Je viens de payer 8,49 $ pour rien ;-( ### 1/5 — Myst the mark *2021-01-08, version 1.5.2* The graphics on myst were amazing- old school but amazing, they totally surrounded you in a 3D world. Riven however is just a series of pictures you flick through. Instead of moving gracefully forward one step at a time and looking around to study the landscape and look for clues. You click once and your 6ft away, no looking left or right unless your at a junction. There’s no awareness of dimension with this game. It’s just a flat puzzle. Was very happy to see them for the iPad. I Started Myst and was very happy to see how they even upgraded a lot of the surfaces. Yet Riven is a joke. I would like to get my money back. It is like they took photos of the screen from a 2 mpx camera and pieced it together. Please tell me they are working on an update and will make it available for all that purchased this verstion. I loved Myst and Riven back in the day. I thought real myst for iPad was pretty good, I was hoping for at least the same level of game play here, BUT WAS SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED. It is extremely difficult to navigate and orient yourself throughout the game. I’m a little surprised that Cyan would release a version like this given their previous commitment to excellence. This is the classical point and click Riven. It's bizarre that some would consider this masterpiece as boring due to the fact that you "go for one picture to another" we all want a remake of Riven, but this does not imply that the original is boring, not even outdated given how beautiful this game looks on the iPad. It gives me such nostalgia to be able to play them again and on my iPad too! They are exactly as I remember them too! The graphics are awesome! Please, please make Myst III! Uru would be nice too, but please make Myst III! Irrespective of that - I still find it's story as eerie and going under my skin as when I first played it. Wandering on this dying world, where every piece you see can be seen in context to the whole story. I know of no other game makers that ever applied such an artistic approach to making a game. But - you need to make time to appreciate its slowness that is much unlike today's rollercoaster rides. ### 5/5 — Puzzles, Storyline, & Gameplay- It's All Good *2020-03-20, version 1.5.2* After replaying RealMyst, I was kind of wary about getting Riven based on reviews that say gameplay can be pretty choppy. I found a great demo that features the game trailer & finally could not resist. With very challenging, detailed puzzles & a deep storyline, I find nothing wrong with a little choppiness in gameplay. It's not an arcade game, it's an involved game for serious puzzlers and there is no need for speed!
