### 3/5 — Not for modern iphone screen sizes.

*2021-05-25*

Please update to work with recent iPhone screen sizes.

### 5/5 — Great game! Forums?

*2021-02-10*

Absolutely an amazing game! I have tried with 2 email addresses to join the forum to chat with other players but have not received any kind of response. Is the forum dead? I hope not. Such an amazing game, I can’t believe I just discovered it in the last couple of months.

### 5/5 — I’ve been zapped with the Wand of Enchantment

*2020-11-11*

I’ve recently discovered/re-discovered this game. I originally played hack on Unix platforms about 30 years ago, and this is very similar. A couple of years ago I found poor adaptations for iOS , but I find this adaptation to be excellent. I particularly like it when I get a good game going and am “lost” in it for hours. Well done!

A couple of comments for the developers:

This version is very “dark”. I realize this makes it harder, and there are things like light wands, but it detracts from the enjoyment.

I have not encountered shops yet: are they in this version? Shops were a lot of fun. There was usually a shop in the first few levels.

“Searching” is clunky, or maybe I just haven’t figured it out. Similar to darkness, it detracts. Dead end passages detract, too - what’s the point?

The occasional Scroll of Identify that identifies all items of a certain type, or x number of items, would be nice.

There should be a way to control where you teleport to? Maybe there is, and I haven’t discovered it yet.

There should be a way to go up stairs when you fall through a pit. Otherwise you don’t have the food, hit points, items, etc. you need to survive at a lower level.

Overall, really well done, and thanks!

### 2/5 — iPad version is not ready for prime time

*2020-11-08, version 2.0.64*

I’ve played the iPhone version for years and love it. The iPad version - not so much. There are no shocking, blessed, or any other powerful weapons available even when you get to a level where you “sense powerful magic” there is none to be found. I’ve gone beyond level 80 on the iPhone but can’t get past 22 on the iPad. Tragic really.

### 2/5 — Movement is not good

*2019-06-05*

Movement is awful. You really should put some love in the character controls.

Update: with dpad, it’s somewhat better but some movements aren’t possible without obvious reason. Eg you can’t enter a door diagonally.

Settings should be accessible from within the game.

**Developer response:** I’m sorry to hear you are unhappy with the controls. Have you tried both control methods? If not, please access Rogue Touch settings from iPhone Settings app or with the gear icon on the Rogue Touch title screen. There is a D-pad option that you might find preferable. Hope you give it another try :)

### 5/5 — Still a Classic

*2019-05-24*

I have played this game, in one form or another, for years and will continue to play as long as the developer maintains it. I am so grateful to him for the most recent update. I had put it down for a while, because it had become crashy. Now it’s like returning to an old friend. Cheers Kevin!

### 5/5 — Love it but still has the lost stairs bug

*2019-01-11*

Love it and have been playing it for several years. I like the upgrade, but just hit the most annoying bug from the old version - a level without stairs. No choice but to restart.

**Developer response:** Really glad you are enjoying the updated Rogue Touch after all this time, but sorry to hear you had an issue finding the stairs again. I was confident that was resolved but can you give me any details like how deep you were in the dungeon, etc? Anything you recall may help me get to the cause of your problem :)

### 5/5 — Like meeting an old friend

*2018-12-02*

I first played this game in the early eighties. It’s plays better with all of the TLC this version has. The Amulet of Yendor is still on level 26, just like the old days. This is a steal foe $2.99. I do very few reviews, just five stars and one stars. Enjoy the game!

### 5/5 — Finally

*2018-05-31*

Yep, so i got out of the dungeon with the amulet of yendor. Such satisfaction after first becoming addicted in the late 80’s on a 5” floppy! Didn’t use any cheats! Fantastic algorithm behind this game. Congrats to the developers

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2018-05-24*

I picked this up a week ago, and love it! Not only have I not won, but I haven’t even come close. But my defeats have been glorious.

If I could add one feature, it would be the ability to go back up a floor. I usually die because I clear a level and am forced lower and lower before I’ve had time to really armor myself up. Being able to ascend dungeon levels would let me spend some more time getting stronger before heading into more danger.

### 2/5 — Feels really unfinished

*2017-11-30, version 2.0.64*

Update: maybe there is a fun game here. I didn’t really look because the controls were not at all to my liking

Original review:
Disappointed. Skip this

Reply to response: Appreciate the reply, I haven’t played true OG rogue but am familiar with all sorts of modern rogue likes. My main problem with this game is the tough/swipe controls. Really found it unintuitive and deleted the game after like 20 moves

### 4/5 — Old good Classic!

*2017-10-10, version 1.70*

Best Rogue remake, but last update didn't installing on iPhone 5 :-(

### 5/5 — Nearly Perfect

*2017-09-08*

This is the only real roguelike on the app store. That said, the new update has crazily cranked up the number of aquators you encounter. After as you reach floor 8, it's aquators for days. Multiple aquators on every floor. The end result is that, unless you're lucky enough to find an elfin armor or a protect armor scroll, the only armor worth holding on to is leather, because anything else is guaranteed to be almost instantly destroyed.

**Developer response:** Glad that you enjoy this classic, enhanced version of Rogue overall! I'm sorry you've been seeing so many Aquators in your travels... Oddly, the code for spawning them vs other specific monster types hasn't changed in this update so you might just be having a very bad run of luck versus the random number generator.

In another review-reply I give a bunch of food and hunger / starvation tips. Along those lines: good news is there are many possible ways to deal with an Aquator onslaught! For everyone curious on how to manage on the floors where they are common:

1) As mentioned in your review, leather and elfin-chain armor are always safe from rust. Protect Armor scrolls can also rustproof any type of armor.
2) Rings of maintain armor will prevent rusting when worn.
3) Shozoku armor is also rustproof and provides stealth ability like the ring of the same name... A rare but powerful combination if you can find it.
4) Blessed weapons will "cancel" out the Aquator's rusting ability when you hit them, as will a staff or wand of Cancelation.
5) Freezing weapons will auto-freeze an Aquator when you hit them, which prevents their rust-attacks from occurring.
6) Certain Secret Characters (names found in the ChronoSoft.com forums) will start off with varieties of magical and safe armors or blessed or freezing weapons that can make Aquators a walk in the park.

Still, Aquators and similar monsters that can erode precious player stats in a matter of seconds definitely could use some tweaking. In the next update there will be a bunch of small gameplay adjustments and some new features :)

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Crashes on launch (ios 18.3.2)

*2025-05-14, version 2.0.64*

Game crashes after clicking new game. Settings, leaderboard, etc all work. I’d like a refund.

### 1/5 — Crashes on launch (ios 18.3.2)

*2025-04-13, version 2.0.64*

Game crashes after clicking new game. Settings, leaderboard, etc all work. I’d like a refund.

### 1/5 — Crashes when new game selected

*2024-06-09, version 2.0.64*

The game now crashes whenever I try to start a new game. This didn’t use to happen so I suspect it’s related to an OS API change. Not sure but it’s a shame because I enjoy the game and now can’t play it.

### 1/5 — Really?

*2022-12-08*

The controls barely work, the profile screen for the character comes up about every third tap. There’s no sound, music or animation for an attack, so you have to read microscopic text (on a phone) to even tell that it’s happening, and half the time you sort of walk through the opponent without even knowing that was a battle. I bailed very quickly on this one. I feel like somebody just reached in my pocket and took $2.99.

### 1/5 — iPad users beware

*2022-11-12, version 2.0.64*

I love rogue likes and just purchase this game. Only to find that it is not optimized for iPads. The resolution is set up for phones and looks terrible, and plays terrible in my opinion on an iPad

### 1/5 — Works poorly on an iPad

*2020-03-31, version 2.0.64*

I had high hopes given the reviews. It did not live up to my memories of a rogue, long ago. All hype, no substance.

### 1/5 — Needs an Update.

*2019-11-01*

Works but not full screen. Also movement control is not very responsive.Unless updated not worth buying,Sorry to say it but absolutely terrible.

### 1/5 — Fix it!!!

*2017-01-22, version 1.70*

Either fix this app or take it off of the store. It doesn't explain that it is hopelessly broken until after you buy it. It hasn't been updated in ages and Does Not Work on newer devices. This is dead. Bury it.

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2016-12-04, version 1.70*

Slow and glitchy, probably because the devs haven't updated in forever. No menu, no game restart, no tutorial, and it won't let me listen to outside audio. The game itself seems fun but the app is pretty much unplayable.

### 1/5 — Terrible UI.

*2016-01-13, version 1.70*

Why does every rogue like on the apple App Store? It's like a requirement. This is so boring. And the Ui is terrible. Get pixel dungeon. It's on iOS now. Should be free!!! Not worth any money.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Rogue für Touch

*2025-06-05*

Eins meiner Lieblings-iPhone-Spiele aller Zeiten. Ein fantastischer Port des originalen Rogue. Spielt sich toll und ist ein "forever game", dass einfach nie aufhört Spass zu machen.

### 5/5 — Great Rogue variant

*2025-02-08*

Loved to play the original epyx rogue on Atari ST back in the day. This is a great rebirth of the game.

### 5/5 — Happy memories.

*2024-11-05*

I can’t believe I’ve been playing this game for almost 10 years and never wrote a review! As someone that loved the Atari ST version this is an easy five star review for me. As I said time again, this is the only game I need on my iPhone. Unlimited replayability and fantastic job from the developer.

### 5/5 — It's Rogue and it's the best

*2023-11-22*

Great version of Rogue. I grew up playing the Mac version and had been playing it on various 512 Mac simulators in the internet... but they would inevitably crash. This app almost never crashes, and when it does, it just brings you either right back to where you were, or to the beginning of the level.
It's similar to the Mac version, except with all the added Feudal Japan era weapons, hero characters, and super weapons. Only thing I miss is the "far seeing" potion from the Mac game.
I probably play this game everyday. No adds, like ever, always works, loads quick, can play it silently or listening to music, I really can't say enough good things about it. It's the perfect "I need to kill 7 minutes" game, or you can spend the whole day playing it.

### 5/5 — Great version of Rouge

*2022-04-29, version 2.0.64*

This is probably one of my favorite games. Grew up playing the old Mac version of Rogue and RogueTouch is the best modern version I’ve found. No bugs to speak of, no adds, great gameplay, and a support website with all the info you would ever need. Also lots of fun extras like secret characters and new weapons. Has leaderboards but I find they don’t always update. No biggy though. If you liked playing the old Macintosh version of rogue you’re going to love this.

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2022-04-17, version 2.0.64*

I love this game. Been playing on and off for over a year. Great adaptation!

### 5/5 — Profoundly Compelling!

*2021-12-09*

I loved Rogue when it was an ASCII game on a single-color monitor. This update preserves the very best of original Rogue with appropriately cool and simple graphics, more sophistication to items, monsters, environment, and strategy. Best of both worlds! Thank you for creating Rogue Touch! This is exactly the game I wanted for my phone!

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2021-07-04*

I am now 17 years old and I used to play this game when I was 6 years old and have been playing consistently since then. It has remained in my heart forever and I love it.

### 5/5 — It’s Rogue

*2021-06-28, version 2.0.64*

I mean, it’s Rogue, my guy. It’s on iPhone. That’s all we need.

### 5/5 — Retro and wonderful

*2021-06-10*

I spent far too much time playing Rogue in college and graduate school, and was thrilled to find this iPhone version. Although this version replaces the glowing green ASCII-character “art” with modern graphics, it staunchly maintains the character of the original game. End-of-the-Boom Boomers like me should welcome this blast from the past, as will presumably younger fans of _Ready Player One_. Well worth the $3, and I hope the developer is encouraged to continue his work.
