## What is Roots to Roux?

Roots to Roux is a safety-first field guide to the plants of the Gulf South — built to help you identify what's growing around you, learn how it has traditionally been used, and never mistake it for something dangerous.

IDENTIFY WITH CARE, NOT A GUESS
Photograph a plant from several angles and Roots to Roux returns ranked candidates — never a single, over-confident verdict. Before any use or preparation information appears, you rule out the plant's dangerous look-alikes yourself, answering questions about the details that actually separate a safe plant from its twin: whether a stem is woody or smooth, how a leaf attaches, what the underside shows. Plants flagged as dangerous, like water hemlock, are fully described so you can recognize them — but no preparation content is ever shown for them.

A PLANT LIBRARY WORTH KEEPING
Browse a growing library of Gulf South plants, each with a plain-language record: where it grows, when it's ready, how people have traditionally foraged and used it, and the cautions that come with it. Vintage botanical illustrations and real photographs sit side by side.

THE APOTHECARY
Explore traditional preparations — teas, salves, tinctures, and oils — recorded plainly and honestly, as heritage knowledge passed down through generations rather than medical advice.

YOUR LOCAL BOTANICAL MAP
See community-reported sightings, foraging spots, trails, and hazards near you. Every pin is a tip, never a promise — places, not people.

GROW WITH INTENTION
Plan and tend your own garden with seasonal planting tips and simple, timely tasks.

KEEP YOUR OWN BOOK
Scan a handwritten recipe card and keep it — private to you. No account is needed to identify plants or use the safety checks — those are always free.

A SIMPLE PROMISE
Roots to Roux is an educational field guide, not a substitute for expert identification or professional medical advice. Never eat, prepare, or use any wild plant unless you are completely certain of what it is. When in doubt, leave it out.

ROOTS TO ROUX PRO (OPTIONAL)
An optional auto-renewing subscription, monthly or yearly, adds unlimited scans and lets you save sightings to your map, keep your recipes and gardens, and read the full preparation steps in the Apothecary. Everyone gets 10 free scans a month, and marking a hazard on the map is always free. Payment is charged to your Apple ID; it renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the period, and you can manage or cancel it in your App Store account settings.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.0.4 — 2026-09-25

Fixes: pinning a plant now saves as a sighting, clearer wording throughout, and the free monthly count now resets on the 1st.

### 1.0.3 — 2026-09-24

Roots to Roux Pro is here, and it is optional. Identifying plants and every safety check stay free.

• Pro adds unlimited scans, saving sightings to My Map, keeping your recipes and gardens, and the full preparation steps in the Apothecary.
• Everyone gets 10 free scans a month.
• Marking a hazard on the map is always free.
• Faster identification: photos go out smaller, and a scan no longer fails when the identification service is slow.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-09-11

The camera stays open now. Hold your phone still and Roots to Roux photographs the plant from every angle by itself — no tapping a shutter six times while you're holding a branch out of the way.

You can also sign in with your Apple ID instead of making a password.

Plus: searching the library finally works the way you'd expect. Type "elderberry" and you get elderberry.

### 1.0 — 2026-09-01
