### 3/5 — Pretty helpful

*2024-12-23*

I am someone who struggle memorizing gel names and numbers, so I thought this would be a good app to help me organize what I wanted in my show.

It works pretty well, but it only allows you to have 4 pallets at a time which is a major downside. I like the sort by hue and sort by transparency options, but I wish they let you filter for both at once.

I like that you can favorite gels, and I like the “compare” feature, which overlays two gels spectral graphs on top of each other so you can see how they are different. However, Ive been experiencing a bug where sometimes in the pallet builder mode instead of showing me the comparison it makes my screen go black, and the only way I can get out of it is by restarting the app.

In a future update I would also love to see a feature that let you write notes about a gel so you remember what you thought about it, and a feature that let you label a gel’s purpose within a pallet (like sidelight or front light). Overall this app is pretty helpful.

### 2/5 — Worse than a swatch book.

*2023-12-06*

The single most useful feature set of an app like this — the only thing that makes it better than a swatch book — is the things that make computers good. Easy, searchable access to large volumes of data. Unfortunately, the Rosco app fails at this. Graphics are the first thing you see on opening the app - you have to hunt for a search field.
I can’t imagine anyone is using the screen on their phone as a colour reference (if you are, stop) — but I might be interested in the data about filters or comparing data between filters.
Unfortunately, the useful information is buried behind sliding panes and squares of colour.
It very much looks like Rosco have been transfixed by my-first-font and UI elements and totally forgotten UX and why people might actually use the app.
The detail of colours - CIE colour space charts for example, is useless images of the sheets from the swatch book. I can’t see where a colour sits in reference to others, zoom in for detail or even see the chart larger than a postage stamp.
Furthermore, they insist on gathering personal information to simply flag favourite or most often referenced filters. There is absolutely no need for it. There’s also no advantage to having the ability to accessing the information elsewhere. I’m never going to choose colours as a designer on my phone, then want to log in elsewhere to reference those colours. Just needless data scraping.
If Rosco would like to develop an app that’s actually user-focused then I might keep it on my phone. As it stands this is just a waste of 15.3MB.
