## What is Rosewood?

Rosewood, formerly FretMaster, is a fretboard trainer for guitar and bass. It learns which notes you keep getting wrong, and drills those.

Most guitarists learn five or six shapes and stop there. Underneath every shape are notes you have never named. A session runs sixty seconds to two minutes: the app shows you a fret and asks what note it is, or names a note and asks you to find it on the neck. It remembers every answer, so it knows the difference between a note you have learned and a note it has never asked you about.

It drills what you keep missing

After a few sessions the app knows which fretboard positions you get wrong and how long each one takes you. Weak Spot is a fifteen-question round built from that record: no timer, no score, just the notes costing you time. It is free, and it is where most practice in the app happens.

The neck fills in as you learn it

The map shows the whole fretboard of your guitar or bass, every position shaded by how well you answer it. It does not flatter you: a fret it has never asked you about stays dark. When the first four frets are solid on every string, the app says first position is finished and moves you up the neck.

Seven ways to practice the fretboard

Name The Note — see a fret, name the note.
Find The Note — see a note, find it on the fretboard: on one string, anywhere, or every occurrence at once.
Weak Spot — fifteen questions drawn from what you keep missing.
Quick Drill — five questions, no clock.
Focus — two minutes on a single note or a single string.
Zen — no timer, no score, no end.
Memory Quiz — the board goes dark and you name the note from memory.

It plays the note

Every answer sounds as it appears, and any note on the reference fretboard sounds when you tap it. The sound is the same whether you were right or wrong: it tells you what the note is, it does not congratulate you.

Guitar, bass and seven-string

Six-string guitar, bass and seven-string guitar are all free, along with left-handed mode, a full reference fretboard you can browse with no timer running, and the whole app in 24 languages. Phone and tablet, portrait or landscape.

What it is not

Not a tuner, not a chord library, not a tab player, not a guitar course. Rosewood teaches where the notes are on the guitar neck, and nothing else. That is the whole idea.

What costs money

Frets 1 to 4 are free and stay free — that is first position, where beginners actually play. One purchase, once, opens frets 5 to 12, sharps and flats, alternate tunings, the 30- and 180-second timers, Memory Quiz, and Blitz, where the clock keeps running while you read the correction.

The map, Weak Spot, the daily challenge, streaks and the reference fretboard are free, and they are staying free.

No account. No ads. No subscription.

Same app, new name

FretMaster became Rosewood in September 2026. Rosewood is the wood a fretboard is often made of. Same developer, same purchase, same progress: if you bought it under the old name, you own it under the new one.
