## What is RouteKeeper GPS?

RouteKeeper GPS is a GPS navigation and track recording app built for road trips, wilderness driving, off-road adventures, hiking, and mountain biking — anywhere you need to know where you are, where you've been, and how to get back.

Have you ever arrived at a wilderness location only to find there is no cellular service there, and your traditional mapping app won't work?
Have you ever been exploring dirt roads or trails in off-grid areas, and wondered how to return to where you started?
Have you ever wondered 'Where did I park?' and wandered around for longer that necessary?

RouteKeeper GPS can help with all of these, and more of your mapping needs.

Navigate with Confidence
Simple and easy to use. See your current GPS position, heading, and speed on a live map. The app is very intuitive and easy to use. Set a Destination and RouteKeeper GPS continuously shows you the bearing and distance as you travel. Add up to 10 Waypoints — trailheads, campsites, landmarks — and track them all simultaneously. Mark your parked vehicle so you always know which direction it's in and how far away it is.

Record Your Route
Tap Record to capture a GPS breadcrumb trail as you go. When it's time to head back, load your saved track and follow it home. Background Track Recording keeps your trail going even when the app isn't on screen or the device is locked. Auto-Track mode goes further — it automatically begins recording the moment your device loses internet connectivity, giving you a return path in areas where turn-by-turn navigation won't work.

Built for Off-Grid Use
RouteKeeper GPS works without cell service or Wi-Fi — your position, heading, speed, and track recording all run entirely on the device's built-in GPS hardware. Saved destinations, waypoints, and tracks are stored locally and available offline. A built-in Nearby Cities panel computes your distance and bearing to surrounding towns from an on-device database, so you can always get your bearings relative to civilization.

Compass Views
A dedicated Compass panel shows bearing and distance to your Destination, Waypoints, parked Vehicle, and nearest cities — all at a glance, without touching the map.

GPX Import & Export
RouteKeeper GPS speaks GPX — the open standard supported by Garmin, Google Earth, CalTopo, and most other mapping tools. Export your tracks and waypoints to the Files app and share them anywhere. Import GPX files from other apps to display tracks and locations on the map. Load multiple tracks simultaneously, each shown in a distinct color.

iCloud Sync
Your saved tracks, destinations, and waypoints sync automatically across all your Apple devices via iCloud.

Honest, Privacy-First Design
No ads. No subscriptions. No sign-up accounts. No unwanted emails or notifications.
RouteKeeper GPS is a one-time purchase with free lifetime updates. Unlimited access costs less than a cup of coffee. You have a free trial period available to try before you buy.
Your data stays on your device and in your iCloud account — it's never sold or shared.

RouteKeeper GPS is a complement to turn-by-turn navigation apps, not a replacement. It's the tool you reach for when the road ends and the trail begins.
Please navigate responsibly.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.02 — 2026-07-23

Version 1.02 — Rock-solid background recording

This release is a major reliability update focused on the thing that matters most: recording your track without interruption, even when the phone is in your pocket with the screen off.
- Background recording no longer cuts out on long outings. We tracked down and fixed the underlying cause of tracks getting cut short or showing a straight line across a stretch you actually walked/drove. Recording now holds up through long periods in the background — on the trail or deep in a city, on-grid or fully off-grid.
- Your recording survives an unexpected shutdown. If the app is ever forced to close mid-recording, your track is now saved continuously as you go, so it can be recovered instead of lost.
- More reliable background tracking on iPhone (iOS 17 and later), bringing RouteKeeper's off-grid recording in line with what you'd expect.
- A more responsive compass and direction indicator. The compass now updates more smoothly, recovers quickly when you stop moving, and no longer sticks pointing the wrong way after a pause.
- Accurate stats on recovered tracks. Distance, duration, and speed now stay correct down to the fraction of a second.

### 1.01 — 2026-05-25

This update focuses on reliability, performance, and polish based on real-world usage since launch.
- Faster app startup — Reduced initialization time so the app is ready to use more quickly after launch.
- Improved map performance — The map now updates more smoothly, with reduced battery impact during active use.
- Background recording reliability — Fixed an issue where compass heading could freeze after the app had been in the background for an interval.
- Better performance during long recording sessions — Rewrote a core statistics calculation to use significantly less CPU, reducing the risk of the app being terminated by iOS during extended background recording.
- Destination search fix — Corrected a sequencing issue with the destination map data that could cause incorrect or delayed results.
- Track clearing fix — Fixed the confirmation dialog that appears when clearing a recording track.
