I decided to download the app to see where they were in the digital world. It's exactly what you expect from them. Trendy hipster type filters and simple layout which is great! They're selection is amazing and filters are very well executed. Unfortunately I ended up deleting due to "Membership". Having a membership for filters is ridiculous, also the one time purchase of $50 is silly. ### 3/5 — Great app hindered by its own limitations *2021-01-08, version 1.6.1* Honestly, this is such an amazing app that has so much potential. Unfortunately, it misses the mark by not including obvious features expected of a photography/editing application like adjusting filter strength or more importantly, photo import! 🤯 How it can exclude that really blows my mind. I can tell the developers and artist are trying though and very talented to boot. I hope to see some of the bugs I’ve been experiencing patched as well and features added to make this the well rounded app I know it can be. ### 3/5 — No Flash/ Hard press big *2020-10-21, version 1.5.1* So far I like that app and they have great filters but I haven’t found the option to turn the flash on in anything. Can someone help? Also when I try using the hard press option to track a subject it closes the app. ### 4/5 — Great app, anamorphic desqueeze, not quite stable yet *2020-07-23, version 1.4.1* Edit: Crashes seem to have been fixed finally. (One star ducked for now, it was broken for a while after all, otherwise great app, can recommend.) Initially I got some very good-looking footage, and even acquired a couple of looks. I used it with an anamorphic clip-on lens for really cool wide-screen video. Past couple weeks the app crashes when opened, and the latest few updates did not address that. Initially thought of getting a perpetual license, but for the time being happy to have saved a few bucks and going to cancel monthly subscription after one month. ### 3/5 — Difficult Choice *2020-05-24, version 1.3.1* I'm a fan Moment gear and the main camera app, this one leaves a little something to be desired. Extremely limited test app and the only other choice is a subscription for a month. I think it's fair that we all hate subscriptions. I get why to use it, but without a full trial of the app, 24 hours even, I hate the thought of having another subscription that I just forget about and cringe every month paying for an app I don't want or need. A full free trial for even a day would take away the possibility of regret. It's just the feeling of I don't know what I'm paying a subscription for, I'm not allowed to get a feel for it, I'm going in blind. I really considered paying full price for the app but again, I can't justify spending $50 on something I can't try out before I buy and have limited to no recourse to get a refund if I don't like it or it doesn't meet expectations for spending $50 on a single app. Other concern is I spend $50 on the app and the promise of updated looks. How long will that go on? At a moment's notice that can go away and I'm left on the hook for the pricey app without future support. ### 4/5 — dope app from a dope company! *2020-05-01, version 1.2.2* I love this app from the interface to the subscription price point; which is very reasonable. the amount of customization it allows within the app is one of my favorite things. The only problem I continue to have with the app is it freezes and exits out when I try to cut/edit the videos with several small clips. This could be because I have an older iPhone or because it’s a relatively new app, either way I know it’s a kink that will probably get iron out as they make new versions. Can’t wait to give it 5. I hope they make the option to duplicate clips instead of just delete and also make it easier to select multiple clips for editing. I was hoping to also select different filters for every film in the same project. And lastly I hope to see more audio editing options like adding music. Like I said I can’t wait to give it 5 stars. ### 4/5 — Moment’s creative talent never disappoints *2020-03-09, version 1.0.2* The entire creative flow, from filter picking to shoot and export, is so intuitive. Plus the looks of the UI and the logo itself are all heart-touching. It would be really nice in the future updates, to have the option of being able to use several frame rates during those clip shooting. ### 4/5 — Cool app, except the subscription for frame rates *2020-03-04, version 1.0.1* I think the app is cool for certain looks and I love the anamorphic option, but I have two issues with it: it maxes out at 30fps so you have essentially no options to make a slow motion shot in these filters, and the frame rate options you do have require a subscription unlike the filters which can be purchased outright. Other than that, this company is amazing and I really love their lenses. ### 4/5 — Solid start but... *2020-03-02, version 1.0.1* Great app, love all the different themes, they really look great. I paid for the full subscription, which I think is totally reasonable. Would love to see more video features like time lapse and Slomo. Being able to shoot video longer than 1 minute would be nice too. I know they intended for this to be used to create stories and short form content, but it would be nice to have some other options. Considering that the themes and filters look so good, it would be nice to use them in multiple ways. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Still to know avail *2021-10-28, version 1.7.2* Received an email response from support team assuring me the bugs were fixed and surprisingly the app worked fine, for 3 days, now we are right back to where we started unable to use without purchasing the - already purchased multiple times - app. Deleted the entire app, I’m out, fun app if it ever worked, running on iPhone with no prior issues until iOS update 15 and beyond. ### 1/5 — There is another app for cheaper! *2021-05-04, version 1.6.7* So there is another retro camera app called retrocam and it has literally every exact feature as this app...minus hidden charges to access full app...retrocam is wayyy better than this app and its cheaper...I highly recommend getting that app instead as they seem to be more focused around the customer’s ability to use the app and not focused around making money off you. ### 1/5 — Subscription for a camera? No thanks. *2020-05-29, version 1.3.1* I don’t rent my Moment lenses that I put on my phone, and I don’t rent the Moment pro camera app. I don’t rent any of my pro camera apps. I wouldn’t subscribe to an app that basically does filters even if I did have the money, and a $50 lifetime subscription is a joke. Do a $10 one time purchase or something like everyone else and stop jerking us around with this BS. I mean, you know I can buy Filmic Pro, Filmic Remote, and their Cinematographer add on for less than your lifetime purchase, right? ### 1/5 — Doesn’t work properly *2020-04-28, version 1.2.2* I’ve subscribed to edit an existing video and it doesn’t allow me to export it, app just crushes everytime I try to do that. Moreover the same situation happens when I try to send feedback. I wanted to check tips (maybe I just missing something) and it asks me to login and then just doesn’t proceed with a further actions. I like the filters, but I can’t do what I’ve paid for, so would like to get a refund. ### 1/5 — Buggy... iPhone 11Pro is not older iPhone! *2020-03-07, version 1.0.2* App will not move past “Exporting Story”. ‘Hang tight this will only take a minute’ message must not mean 60 seconds. I’ve reported to RTRO Support but they only said they will look into the issue. No follow up response or update. I’ve even deleted and reinstalled app... and was charged again when I restored purchase. Very Frustrating! 😡 Update! Moment response was they are working on an update for OLDER iPhones... mine is an iPhone 11Pro. Did I miss a bunch of new iPhones??? ### 1/5 — Watermarks and frame rates locked behind paywall *2020-03-03, version 1.0.1* You guys should make the frame rate adjustment and watermark settings available for purchase a la carte. They are locked behind a subscription paywall. It kind of defeats the purpose of allowing each look to be available for purchase separately, just to get a paywall popup when you want to adjust the frame rate or remove the watermark. Imagine buying a filter then when you use it you can’t set it up the way you want unless you subscribe. Then it defeats the purpose of buying that filter in the first place because the subscription also unlocks the same filter... except this way you end up spending $2 more for the exact same features. Kind of stupid if you ask me. If you’re going to provide one-time purchase for filters they should include all settings to modify them. ### 1/5 — Everything is Subscription. Pass! *2020-03-02, version 1.0.1* Let me start by saying, I love moment! I’ve used their lenses since the early days & they only had a couple, and I just recently purchased EVERY LENS available. So I’m not afraid of spending money. However, I am NOT a fan of subscriptions! I love trying things out and giving detailed reviews. Give me a purchase option and I’ll give a fair review. Until then, you get one star, and it should be zero. ### 2/5 — Errors *2020-07-10, version 1.4* Weird glitches where the half the screen goes black and then take a picture with the picture moved up and a black box on the bottom. There is an option for no watermarks on pictures but cant seem to find one for the video, which seems weird to not have for people that are paying for the subscription. ### 2/5 — No photo capability *2020-05-26, version 1.3.1* It is quite a disappointment that the developer falsely advertise photo functionality. I purcased the presets and the app doesn’t allow me to take photos. Even after purchasing preset films, you still have to take out a subscribtion to allow photo taking. The app only allows one minute videos. ### 2/5 — Promising - But there’s the fine print *2020-05-22, version 1.3.1* I’m a happy owner of 2, soon to be 3, Moment lenses and, after catching a well done promo I had hopes for some fun experiments with Rtro. Oh but wait.... There’s a subscription to unlock the still camera? Or $2/ filter. Really? Come on Moment, you could do a little better with ‘free’ features. I wish you the best with the app. For myself & what would likely be only occasional use, paying for yet another ‘subscription’ means my experiment here is over. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Love!!!… but there’s a huge issue with RTRO *2021-10-21, version 1.7.1* This app is easy and straight forward to use. The looks are extremely varied and I enjoy pairing them with the different lenses I have. The looks are beautiful and very professional. I’d love to use them on some projects that I have but I can’t because of a limitation that can be easily fixed. There’s a flaw that I’ve run into that only occurs when using Moments apps( my preferred apps). When I’m using my DJI Raveneye to use the motion control feature, I can’t because Moment and RTRO orientation of the app starts vertically instead or horizontally like most other camera apps. This makes the camera rig I’ve created become extremely limited. I really hope Moment reads this and fixes this feature in their apps. Besides that issue(personally big for me), the app is well worth the price tag. I’d highly recommend it to further your creative efforts!!! All the features and functions are a great concept and the bugs seem to be all worked out. In fact, they contacted me to let me know, which is a testament to Moment’s dope customer service. I paid for a full year based on my previous experience with Moment’s app and filters. The level of support for the app and the new filters and features in such a short time are really impressive. **Developer response:** If you update to 1.4.1, those issues should all be resolved! :) ### 5/5 — Super fun app *2020-06-27, version 1.3.1* I love creating stories with this app. I paid for RTRO+ and don’t regret it. Taking photos, using the looks on old videos, and access to all the looks is worth it for me. I find myself waiting for the next update because they’ve been doing good things with this app. Just keep making it better and don’t let the updates fall by the wayside! Plus I’m a huge Moment fan and have 3 of their lenses. My current favorite for shooting clips on the go for social media. I am hoping there may be an option in the future versions to use these as filters for other videos in my camera roll or something like that. For more thought out photography and videos I am an avid fan of the Moment app, and all the versatility it provides. It would also be cool to select moment lenses through RTRO as well. The filters are unique and the controls feel real smooth. Most of my work is outside and I have to wear gloves. The ease of controls are perfect for grabbing quick little shots when every second counts. I also dig how the inspirations for each each filter are given. Each of them really come to life. For the best use of the app- pair it with a Moment Anamorphic Lens.
