### 3/5 — Very basic

*2026-08-01, version 3.24.0*

I won’t pay for this again. It ends up being quite discouraging. The distances are OK and on par with the PDFs from the website, but the paces are a bit ridiculous. Check out Reddit threads for more. Gives me a bad “grade” for going farther but not quite as quickly. Won’t connect with Apple Watch and the gps doesn’t match distances. My Apple Watch gives much more feedback than the app. Great for tracking but not great for coaching.

### 2/5 — Glitchy new app

*2026-07-28, version 3.24.0*

The app failed to sync my completed runs despite telling me that my garmin was synced. It then adapted the plan to the fallacy that I hadn’t been completing assigned workouts. I discovered this right before my race and realized it had been way over training me.

You should really be QCing your product and hiring engineers that know what they’re doing. Gotta pay for talent.

Support also gave me an LLM slop response when I inquired.

Product was better before the glitchy auto adapt feature.

### 4/5 — Overall great, it appears could use slight improvement

*2026-06-10, version 3.24.0*

I really enjoy the structure of the training program and the feedback. My only complaint is that when I use the app to track a run it often won’t let me save at the end of a workout and I end up having to enter the information manually

### 3/5 — Ok not great

*2026-05-01, version 3.24.0*

Very inflexible training program. Can only use a garmin and then manually enter the time. I said I was injury prone and the mileage was not adapted for that. If i do the workout tuesday instead of monday i cant log that run and have to enter everything manually. Runna is way more flexible, and adds all types of cross training workout. I will be going back to Runna and if need be just use Hal’s program online for free. Not worth paying for.

### 2/5 — App seems broken

*2025-11-03, version 3.20.0*

I used the app previously with my old phone just fine, but upgrading to the iPhone 16 pro and now when I install the app I am blocked by the Hal+ purchase screen with no way to bypass to free mode

### 2/5 — Bug/App doesn’t Work

*2025-10-05, version 3.19.0*

I loved the interface. Loved the app. Great plans. Totally would’ve kept my subscription but every time I went to login/ it would make me re buy the subscription. It wouldn’t register that I already had an account. I would get an error message about auth expiring or malware. Very frustrating as it’s a good app!

### 1/5 — Long run recommendation

*2025-09-17, version 3.17.0*

I told the app that I wanted my long run to be on Sunday. I’ve created a few different plans to see if it’s modify, but it’s consistently placing them on a weekday. WTH. Agree with some of the others that I’m already running 20-35 miles a week and this was creating a “speed” plan for me to run 7 miles this week?!

### 4/5 — Did you get rid of the free version or is it just a bug?!

*2025-09-16, version 3.16.0*

I’ve been using the app forever and love it, but I was curious about the plus benefits and when I clicked on it to learn more, it wouldn’t let me go back and was trying to force me to upgrade to the paid version with no warning! I was in the middle of a training cycle too. Super disappointing. Please fix the bug or let me go back to the free version.

### 1/5 — Erased profile halfway through Marathon training

*2025-09-11, version 3.16.0*

This app erased my profile halfway through marathon training. I contacted customer service and they said everything is gone and they cannot recover it. This was my first marathon, and I was relying on it quite a bit for the training program. When I tried to start a new program, no matter how I changed the parameters, it treated me like I was starting from scratch to train for a marathon, so my 16 mile long runs were now 5 mile long runs. So at that point having an app was worthless because I’m going to have to figure this out on my own. I was really looking forward to seeing all of my stats and miles accumulated after three months of training, oh well.

### 4/5 — More option should be

*2025-09-09, version 3.16.0*

The plan really help me on training a marathon. However, there should be more options in the “other race” such as 18 miles

### 3/5 — Not flexible

*2025-09-01, version 3.16.0*

The app works fine but isn’t flexible. Life happens and sometimes you have switch days around and this doesn’t allow you to do that. Some days the feedback I get just tells me to stick to the plan. I’m trying!

### 1/5 — Requires entering credit card to create account

*2025-08-24, version 3.16.0*

Opening the app requires starting the “2 week free trial” and entering credit card info. The internet said the app was useable for free but it seems that isn’t the case unless maybe you can sign up for a paid plan then cancel it?

Seems like a very hostile and money grubbing user interface, I’ll stick to strava or Nike Run Club.

### 1/5 — Forces you to do free trial

*2025-08-15, version 3.16.0*

Forces you to put in info or use apple pay for the free trial without being able to exit out and use the app for free.

### 1/5 — App not working

*2025-07-27, version 3.16.0*

I can’t sync runs to my Garmin or do basic things like make changes to my weekly mileage. It just auto goes back to the default.

### 4/5 — Hal+ is a good option

*2025-07-17, version 3.16.0*

I am trying Hal+ (fee based subscription) for a year. About a month in I am happy with base training program although it reminds me to be careful of cold weather, etc. Not a bad suggestion but it is late spring for me going into summer.

Setting that aside, first thing to know is that the app will not integrate with an Apple Watch. It’s all manual entry for me. Second, as far as I can tell I cannot drag and drop workouts to shift things around. If I decide to move things around, I just make a mental note to manually enter as I complete a run. If you’re tied to a Garmin that may not be possible. Finally, I realized I needed to add in some other rest days due to family trips, etc. It appears that that might only be possible if you abandon your current plan then create a new plan. Also, if you have a cross training day scheduled it is just easier to mark it as completed with no other data entered.

Before this, I had used a Coach Parry basic 5K plan (my preferred race). I like Coach Parry and their basic plan (and advice), like this one, it is tied to Training Peaks. For that 12-week period I could drag and drop workouts on my laptop or change dates on the app. I probably could have changed some of the interval workouts to tempo runs (which are used in the Hal+ app) but did not try to do that. I also had access to some of the calculators used on TP. Coach Parry felt a bit more robust but also limited in other ways. Again, I am only referring to the lite or limited plans on Coach Parry. There are other more expensive options. I have not tried any other plans or apps.

As a so-so runner in my late 60s, I give Run With Hal 4 stars. It is a straight forward app with reasonable workouts. It loses a star for not integrating with the Apple Watch plus some inflexibility on scheduling workouts or access to useful calculators that you might get elsewhere. Update July 2025: first, I discovered that in the Hal+ program there are some limited options to edit the ‘do not schedule’ days along with a few other adjustments that are minimal; second, I noticed the plan pushes the pace as you progress-my example is as an older runner, I run around a 12:30 to 13:00/mi pace for Zone 2 but the app has pushed that up to an 11:30 pace based on previous workouts but I cannot do that without straddling the Z2 and Z3 for heart rate; finally, I ran into a foot/ankle issue towards the end of my offseason training plan but other than adding no training days there are no options to adjust the recommendation pace. I can work around these by just adjusting my workouts as suggested then manually entering the data later in the week. Again, I assume that this is not possible if you are choosing the direct connection to a Garmin device. These really are minor issues for the app but ones you would need to consider if you plan to use it.

### 2/5 — not able to skip hal+ screen

*2025-07-16*

i really liked the app, and want to use the free version, but i'm not able to skip the promotion screen for hal+

### 1/5 — Only pay option appearing

*2025-07-15, version 3.16.0*

I downloaded this app yesterday however once I create an account it brings me to a screen for run with Hal +…it gives me no option to exit out…requiring me to sign up for a free trial or pay a monthly fee…anyone else have this problem??!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Worthless No Pacing Input. Why can I not put in my desired race pace????

*2026-04-21, version 3.24.0*

I contacted the service about a month ago. I have been following the 18 Week Hal Higdon Advanced 2 marathon plan since Jan 11 and am in week 13 of the plan and have updated my paces since my last 10k to 41:04. Since then my long run paces have been absolutely insane. I am looking to run a 3:10 marathon but I am getting the app telling me I should have run my last long run at 6:42 for 20 miles. Why can I not put in my desired race pace???

I have attached a few screen grabs. This is a joke and now it is giving me issues and saying I am undertrained for not hitting those marks. I have attached the one for this Thursday that says I should do my run for 5 miles at marathon pace of 6:15!!! These times and the algorithm is totally off and is worthless to me now in my final weeks of preparation for my race. How is this possible, I guess I’ll be doing it on my own and not renewing or continuing with this worthless app. Terrible.

### 1/5 — No longer free

*2026-02-19, version 3.23.0*

Got 3 weeks into training and they cut off access with out warning. I reached out to support and they said they are moving towards a subscription model. The app is not worth $59.99 in my opinion.

### 1/5 — Free trial scam

*2026-02-16, version 3.23.0*

I can’t get past the forced to pay for a subscription screen

### 1/5 — FRAUD AND A SCAM

*2026-01-17, version 3.22.0*

If I could give less than 1 star, I would. DO NOT FALL FOR THEIR FREE TRIAL!!! In November of 2025 I downloaded the app, looked around & then deleted it. Apparently at that time I had activated a free trial. Fast forward to January 10th, I was on a forum & someone suggest I download this app.. so I did & at that time it offered me a free trail for two weeks. Instantly I was charged. As soon as I was charged for the TEAR!!! I tried to go in immediately and dispute but it was denied. Now I’m stuck paying $60 for an app that I didn’t want.

### 1/5 — Don’t waste your time. Can’t skip hal+ Paywall

*2026-01-01*

Paywalled as soon as i registered. No way to bypass.. dark pattern designed app

### 1/5 — Free version used to work now only pay prompts

*2025-12-05, version 3.20.0*

When I first I used this app I liked it but seemed to obsolete the long stand free use mode. Unfortunately when I started using this I was not a disciplined running. This year after training for several prior marathons it now surfaced Hal+ pay prompt. I wanted it to work as before and could not find a way to dismiss the prompt. Too bad. I originally used these plans printed from web over a decade ago. I will go back to using those same plans and entering them in my calendar. Fond farewell to limited free use version of Hal app tech.

### 1/5 — Will not let me see the rest of my plan after I ended my paid subscription when it used to be free

*2025-11-07, version 3.20.0*

I am finishing up my training for my marathon in November and now that the bulk of my training is over I cancelled my plan to just use the remaining day plans for my taper mileage like I did last year for my marathon. However, there is now a pay wall that will not let you access the app unless you pay $6.99 per month or the $59.99 annual subscription. I am disappointed that they have now made it pay to use at all and this is most likely my last time using this app. I will be switching over to Endorphins or Runna due to this fiasco. Endorphins running from what I have seen provides weight/plyometric training workouts in conjunction with the the runs. It was nice while it lasted but the fact that I now have to pay to just see the remaining of my plan which was normally free has definitely left a sour taste in my mouth.

### 1/5 — Inflexible and disappointing

*2025-10-13, version 3.19.0*

I ended up creating my own training plan in a spreadsheet, and I finished a 50k as desired. No thanks to Run With Hal. I was very disappointed with the inflexibility of the 50k training plan on Run With Hal, and I’m disappointed I spent $60 or whatever to get it. I was navigating an injury and there was no good way to pause, indicate a need for temporary drop in mileage, etc. Also, as a working parent of young kids, no good way to easily shift around rest days and run days. And no good way to adjust goal pace or other attributes once you start a plan. I also don’t like the letter grade rating for adherence to the training plan. Huge turn off. Positive encouragement would be preferred. I would not use this app again.

### 1/5 — Priced out

*2025-10-08, version 3.19.0*

I have been using the run with Hal app for about 6 months, and they recently removed the free tier entirely. This is incredibly disappointing, and this update is not reflected on the website or in the apps description. This app is quite frankly not worth the addition fee for me

### 1/5 — Forces paid version

*2025-09-22, version 3.17.0*

Forces you to do paid version despite advertising as free.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Perfect for beginners!

*2026-07-02, version 3.24.0*

I’m not a runner by any means. I started about 4 months ago and picked up Run with Hal to prepare for a 5k, and I’ve loved having a plan created for me! I will say sometimes it will have me run like 7 miles, which my mom (who is an experienced runner) says is a bit much for a beginner. Other than that, I love it!

### 5/5 — Hal believes in you!

*2026-05-03, version 3.24.0*

I had a 10 mile race and I have previously gotten hurt and my times were getting worse and worse. I followed his plan and he predicted a pace for my race that I haven’t run in 10 years. I thought yeah right… well Yes Right! I ran that race and felt great and my time was amazing like he predicted. I followed it to a tee and it worked!!!!!!! Highly recommend! Hal believes in you and so now you can believe in you too!!

### 5/5 — Fantastic !

*2025-08-03, version 3.16.0*

If you are looking for an
app that can help you build muscle or just to increase your speed this is your app.

### 5/5 — Amazing app

*2025-07-11*

I use the free version. You can set a target to train for, and it will create a training program/schedule based on your needs. I could barely run 2 km at a time before, and following this system, I’m easily running 15 km at a time. I lost 25 kg in 3 months using the three month half-marathon training course. This was a life-changing app for me.

### 5/5 — Great!

*2025-06-09, version 3.15.0*

This app has been super helpful in planning my marathon training, I use it almost every day.

### 5/5 — Marathon training

*2025-06-04, version 3.14.0*

Can’t say enough good things. Very easy with a personalized touch!

### 5/5 — A step up

*2025-05-24, version 3.14.0*

This app and its workouts are a reasonable step up in my training. I am 60, I am training for a 3:20:00 marathon, and my top goal is I want to age well.

The mix of types of runs as well as the reasonable philosophy of running comments and thoughtful expressions along the way are helpful.

I do find myself understanding my body better and I am stronger, faster, with greater endurance.

I appreciate the workouts design and intensity. I can accomplish most of them, with room to exceed or ease off.

The app is easily navigated for my level without lots of extra layers, although I think additional layers are there for me to reach for beyond my current plan.

The price is very reasonable.

### 5/5 — Thanks Hal, love my run buddy

*2025-05-24*

Great app. Love it. Getting more out of me :)

### 5/5 — Very Nice

*2025-05-14, version 3.14.0*

I Like

### 5/5 — Hal

*2025-05-06, version 3.14.0*
