## What is Runner Lab?

Runner Lab reads your runs from Apple Health and turns them into a clear picture: how much you've done, where you're heading and what you can reach by the end of the year.

Everything happens ON YOUR IPHONE. Runner Lab reads Health read-only, never writes to it, has no account and uses no tracking.

THE YEAR AS A LAP OF THE TRACK
• Set a goal in miles or kilometers: the checkered finish is the goal, the lap run is your distance to date.
• Below the track, one line at a time: the finish at this pace, the gap to the plan, the year end, the markers passed, the years at the same hour.
• The current week as bars, day by day, against the plan, last week or your typical week; and every run with the thing to notice.

MY YEAR
• Free: your year page by page — the distance, the day you run most, your biggest month, the weeks, the climbing, the year's best time.
• The goal gets its page only if you reached it, with the day.

FORM & TRAINING LOAD
• Today's form with its curve, and recovery: HRV, resting heart rate, VO₂max.
• With Runner Pro: acute/chronic load week by week, time in zone and efficiency.

RECORDS & PREDICTIONS
• Personal records on standard distances, outdoors and indoors, and how much each one beat the previous.
• The race of the years: each year's best on the same track.
• With Runner Pro: the race prediction with its range, and the years on the distance.

RECURRING ROUTES
• Runner Lab recognizes the loops you repeat by comparing the shape of the GPS tracks: the runs, the best time, every repeat.
• Rename, merge or split routes.
• With Runner Pro: the latest repeats compared, and the best and the latest split by split.

HABITS
• Your running days with the calendar, the longest break, your typical week, the time you set off, how often you run, long runs, the months and the years.
• With Runner Pro: every month and every year against the year before.

EVERY RUN
• Time, pace, track, elevation and zones; the splits with their climb and heart rate; power, cadence, stride, energy and cardiac drift.
• With Runner Pro: comparisons with your record and the same route, split by split, load and the two halves.

WIDGET, SHORTCUTS & NOTIFICATIONS
• The "Year" widget on your Home Screen and Lock Screen: the year's oval, the goal share and the distance left. When the data gets old, it says so.
• Three actions for the Shortcuts app.
• Optional, local notifications: Sunday, the first of the month, after every run, records, goal reached.

SHARE & EXPORT
• A card for a run, a record, the goal or the year, with no coordinates and no maps.
• Every run as GPX and the archive as CSV.

THE RUNNER LAB EDGE
Apple only computes form and load for natively recorded workouts. Runner Lab computes them ALSO for runs imported into Health from other apps or devices.

RUNNER PRO
The numbers are free: goal and projection, the week, the archive, every run, today's form, records, routes, habits. Runner Pro opens the analyses: load and time in zone, efficiency, predictions, the comparisons of every run and every route, months and years against the year before. Monthly or yearly subscription, or a one-time purchase. The yearly subscription starts with a seven-day free trial.

ACCESSIBILITY
Larger Text up to accessibility sizes, charts with VoiceOver's Audio Graph, contrast measured in both themes, 44-point tap targets, Reduce Motion respected.

PRIVACY
No server, no account, no tracking. Run maps come from Apple Maps. Two optional features, off by default: "Names from places" sends a route's halfway point once to Apple's geocoding to obtain its name; "Your choices in iCloud" keeps a copy of your goals and preferences in your iCloud, with no health data.

Requires runs recorded in Apple Health. No data yet? You can explore the app with sample data.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.1 — 2026-10-22

• Miles: in Settings › Units, choose kilometers or miles; by default the iOS region decides (miles in the United States and the United Kingdom). With miles come paces, splits and comparisons mile by mile, elevation in feet, and the mile instead of the kilometer among your records; the 5 km and the 10 km stay races. Widget, Shortcuts, notifications and cards use the same unit.
• Form states facts, not verdicts: the form number without a band name, load without a "safe zone" or a steep-ramp warning, time in zone as time in the first three zones, HRV with the week's average and your usual range. The tip of the day is gone with them: on real runs and in the research, these verdicts don't hold up.
• Cardiac drift is a fact of the run, free, on runs of an hour or more; the efficiency of a single run is gone, because it followed the chosen pace more than fitness.
• A new note under your runs: a run more than 10% longer than the longest run of the previous thirty days says so ("+35% on the longest run of the previous 30 days").
• Automatic maximum heart rate is the highest confirmed in the last three years, not of all time, because maximum heart rate declines with age: for long-time runners some runs change zone.
• When a run has no route or heart rate, because the app that recorded it doesn't write them to Health, its page says so next to the source, and the "i" says which readings are missing.
• A run's page says how many times you've run its route and how many at the same length, and the route comparison uses the latter.
• Early in the year the finish day and the year-end distance wait: until the year's runs are enough for a projection that holds, the Home screen, the widget and Shortcuts don't say them. On real runs, the January projection was off by more than half.
• From iOS 26, the first read of your runs continues outside the app, with the count in the iOS notice; if iOS stops it, it resumes where it left off when you come back.
• With Increase Contrast the faint tones get more contrast, and with Differentiate Without Color context bars get an outline, so emphasis isn't shown by color alone.
• Tapping a notification with Settings or another page open on top closes them and opens the run; and with the app open across New Year's, the Home screen moves to the new year by itself.
• Without iCloud on the phone, the row for your choices in Settings says so.
• On an iPhone set to a language the app doesn't have, such as German or Japanese, Runner Lab now speaks English, like its App Store page, instead of Italian.
• A run's card no longer marks the start and leaves out the first and last 200 meters of the route: for anyone who runs from home, start and finish are home.
• Cards can be saved to Photos from the share sheet, with "Save Image": Runner Lab only asks to add them, and your library is never read.
• With "Names from places" on, Apple receives the halfway point of each route instead of its start; and the privacy texts also mention a run's map, which comes from Apple Maps.
• The week now runs Monday to Sunday for everyone, with ISO week numbers, like the Sunday summary: in the United States it started on Sunday, and on Sunday evening the notification and the Home screen showed two different weeks.
• The week's plan follows your typical week: if you run on fixed days, you're no longer behind every evening before your day.
• A new note under your runs when a run is your fastest of the last 52 weeks over a distance without being a record: for when you're coming back from a break or past your peak.
• On the goal page the track is wider, and below it the last 12 weeks show in how many you already ran what the number asks for, with the distance per run and the day you'd reach it at this pace.

### 3.0 — 2026-10-17

• The year is a lap of the track. On the Home screen the checkered finish is the goal and the lap run is your kilometers to date; below, one line at a time — the day of the finish at this pace, the gap to the plan, the kilometers at year end — and the track draws only what the line says. Then the track unrolls into a straight: the markers passed with their day, and past years at the same hour. A tap or a sideways swipe moves to the next line; past the goal the lap starts again from the finish.
• The week on the Home screen: the seven days as bars against the plan, last week or your typical week, and its page with the weeks before, the week in its year and its numbers. Each run says, when there is one, the thing to notice: a record, a marker, the longest of the month.
• Every tab has the same shape: the number, a figure and one line at a time, facts only; below, the analyses, one row each that opens its own page. How to read a page is in its "i".
• History becomes Habits: running days with their calendar, the longest break, your typical week, the time you set off, full weeks; below, how often you run, the days, long runs, the months and the years. Every past year has its page with the oval, the markers, the year before and the chapters of "My year".
• In Records the distance is picked on a scrolling track, and the whole page is about it: the race of the years, the record and the one before, the distance's records one per row; the indoor time is a row among the analyses.
• A run's page has time, pace, track, elevation and zones at the top; below, the splits with each kilometer's climb and heart rate, and the run's data: power, cadence, stride, energy. To share, press and hold the top of the page.
• Heart rate, read in full: Health keeps much of it in packets, and the app read their average; it now reads every measurement, and on first launch it re-reads the runs already read. For people who have run for years, zones, load and form change, and maximum heart rate is confirmed over thirty seconds.
• Each run's zones read the resting heart rate of the thirty days before it, so past runs no longer change from one day to the next.
• Records read the end of each run as the watch measures it: if you finish just past a round kilometer, a record may gain a few seconds, never lose them.
• Your choices in iCloud: with the switch in Settings › Your data, goals, routes and preferences stay in your iCloud, and a new installation can restore them. No health data.
• First launch is a single page: what is read from Health and why, and the sample data. Then reading your runs has its own page, which the ring at the top reopens.
• When a run comes in with the Home screen in front, the number climbs and the lap runs to the new kilometers; with Reduce Motion everything changes without moving.
• A goal can be set on a past year too, and is picked on a track with the kilometers run and past years.
• The small widget is the year's oval; the medium one adds the kilometers and the day of the finish. Share cards have the oval.
• The icon has a dark and a tinted version, and at launch the screen is already the color of the paper.
• Settings has the app's look: rows on paper, drawn switches, and maximum and resting heart rate on their own page.
• Larger Text grows at every step, Italian dates take the right article, and VoiceOver reads the oval and every page's lines.

### 2.7.1 — 2026-09-25

• A run that arrives while the app is closed no longer disappears. Health wakes the app twice for the same run, and the two reads could overlap: the notification arrived, but the run didn't show up. A run lost this way comes back the first time the app opens.
• After tapping a run's notification, records, form and routes already count it, without going through Records or Form.
• "After every run" goes out before the app looks for a record, and the background wake-up has time to finish.
• Your maximum heart rate is rebuilt correctly even after an interrupted first read: it could stay at the value of recent runs only, and zones and load with it.
• Heart rate that the watch delivers after the run enters your form right away, not at the next run.
• "Recompute analysis from Health data" works even while the app is computing, and no longer freezes it.
• Leaving the sample data brings back your records and the names you gave your routes.
• A route's best time comes from a single repetition: time, pace and date of the same run.
• In Form the chart labels no longer overlap.
• The start-of-month summary gives the date of the read, not only the weekday.

### 2.7 — 2026-09-24

• Lighter. At launch the app asks Health only for the runs that changed since the last read, not the whole list; a new day with no new runs moves your form by one day instead of redoing the sums of every run; the widget is rewritten only when something changed.
• Smoother. Form, Records, Routes, History and a run's page do their sums once, not on every frame, and route recognition works without freezing the screen.
• The first read has its own page. On first launch, after a reinstall or after "Recompute analysis from Health data", the app reads the details of every run: a page shows what is being computed, how many runs have been read and, when it can be said, how long is left; it already shows what the list knows — kilometres, runs, years — and the app can be entered right away, without waiting for the end. On the Home screen a row reopens it while the read lasts.
• One ring. While the app reads and computes, the ring in the header is the same on every tab, always sits in the same place and fills only once, while runs are read; cards no longer have a bar of their own.
• The words. The app's sentences state facts, number first and without advice: the run told in the past tense ("the fastest kilometre was the seventh"), the reasons behind your form ("acute/chronic 1.17, in range"), error messages without a "we"; and VoiceOver says what a touch does instead of asking you to tap.
• In Records the times in the tables are aligned right, on the seconds: a column of times reads from the end.
• The gain on a record is the difference between the two times as you read them: no "−1 s" next to two equal times, and "Record beaten" only arrives when the written time improves.
• In the Habits calendar the month initials follow the app's language even when the phone's region uses another one.

### 2.6 — 2026-09-21

• Home is the current year, in one figure. Under the number, the answer: "By year end 1,980 km". In place of the chart, "The year" card: the weeks standing on the goal bar — the last eight in accent, the current one outlined —, the plan tick, the tail to where you get at this pace, the months and the goal day. Past years open from History › Years, with "My year", the records and the runs of that year.
• Every section opens with what it is about. Form with today's form and its curve over the last thirty days, for everyone; Records with the time over your distance and the line of your records; Routes with the loop you repeat most, drawn large; History with everything you have run and your last run. Same rhythm on all five: your thumb finds the same thing at the same height.
• History has your runs. It opens on Runs: every outing month by month, with the year you pick; then Years, Periods (months and weeks together) and Habits. "See all" on Home goes there. The app reopens on the section you left.
• Your distance. In Settings › Records you choose which distances are highlighted and which one is yours: it opens Records, sits in the widget and in Shortcuts. Default: 5, 10 and half, 10 km as yours. Miles leave the records (the unit of measure comes in a later version).
• Records shows how you improved. A real table — distance, time, pace, date, one line per record and per prediction — and below it the years × distances grid: your best of every year, the all-time record in accent; tap a time and the run opens.
• A route's runs are always visible. In a route, the list of every time you ran it is for everyone; Runner Pro keeps the comparison between repeats. A "…" next to each run to split it from the route or put it back.
• Notifications open the run. "After every run" and "Record beaten" open the run; Sunday, month and year say how far they read only when the last read was a day earlier.
• Care in the details. One minus sign, a unit in every cell, one margin; charts say their numbers; the five glyphs at the bottom share one weight; every sheet closes top left; the words keep one tone, the lab that notices. No more pull to refresh: the app updates by itself; if Health does not answer, it says so.
