But there’s one I’d like to see made. One where it’s like choice of the dragon but with horses. Maybe have the choice between being a wild stallion or mare, or perhaps a humans view on a wild herd. Reasonable telling of the story BUT the story makes a few leaps in time that you don't really "feel" as a reader. Simple stat mechanics. A short story BUT it did have some meat for the ending and that's always my number one complaint for choice games. So what would be a 3 star is now a 4 star. ### 3/5 — Too short! *2017-03-14, version 1.0.0* While I thought this was a decent concept, I feel like the author didn't put enough time into it. Playing through the second time made me realize how little you can change the story. I don't expect too much from apps, but being able to change anything other than your stats is not too much to ask. ### 5/5 — Choices, relationships, and adventure. Maybe love. *2017-03-02, version 1.0.0* Growing up, I switched from reading choose-your-own-adventure books to playing interactive fiction games that focused on solving puzzles. The books provided suspense and intrigue--What happens if I make this choice versus that choice? With the games, I experienced that intense sense memory--sights, sounds, sensations, and emotions--that I love so much about reading. Years later, I remember the grim choices required in Infocom's Planetfall, the ash-tongued feeling that came after I completed the puzzle. Kelly Sandoval's interactive novel, Runt of the Litter, rekindled my memories of those immersive experiences. I played a thrall, essentially a serf, in the service of an empire of gryphon riders who face invading wyrm riders and Dropfeather, a gryphon-killing disease. Somewhat stressfully and quite satisfyingly, the novel requires choices almost at every turn. I managed friendships with a group of four other characters, raised a gryphon, dealt with Unnar (he's a sh***y person who happens to be a gryphon rider and therefore has power over the main character), and explored the greater world. I've played the novel once, enough to get a sense of the world while still leaving plenty for me to explore. I've discovered the cure to Dropfeather, encountered wyrm riders, and made sacrifices. I've started a second game, intent on exploring other options and outcomes. (I'd like to live this time.) I strongly recommend the game. It leaves open the possibilities for relationships with the different characters, and there's quite a lot that I have yet to explore. Unlike the interactive fiction games I used to play, this novel contains many possible outcomes. Rather than puzzles to solve, there are relationships to build (possibly with the wyrm riders, or the exiled gryphon keeper, or people I've yet to encounter). ### 5/5 — Such a sweet story :) *2017-02-28, version 1.0.0* I loved the story! Very low replay value and even though the story was written well it wasn't that long and not the best of stories. Highly recommended. ### 5/5 — Another masterpiece *2017-02-24, version 1.0.0* The story was absolutely amazing, I genuinely felt attached to Lostsong (My Gryphon) and all the characters involved. *Careful Spoilers* So many feeling went through me in my experience with this. Even with the little time we had, I found myself forming real bonds with the characters. When my final moments came and I had to sacrifice myself to save Lostsong, and the wyvern egg, I felt waves of emotions I didn't even know I had. To some the adventure up as a masterpiece, still isn't doing it justice. I would with out a doubt recommend this, absolutely astounding! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Not worth it *2017-03-10, version 1.0.0* Finished in an hour with no desire to replay. ### 1/5 — A headache to read *2017-03-03, version 1.0.0* I understand that companies are getting in trouble left and right for not being politically correct but I honestly believe this was done out of pure laziness it's not illegal to write his,him or her but instead I you put zer even when it's clear that the character is male or female just so you don't have to make two pages one with her one with his ### 2/5 — Meh *2018-03-15, version 1.2.0* Nothing special. ### 2/5 — Meh *2017-05-20, version 1.1.0* The story was fair to moderate, but the writer needs to understand that without pictures we are left to imagination. If 50 % of the characters are non gendered and use random non gender pronouns then you have given us little to imagine, it was a big distraction. Very few people in real life claim to have no gender at all, if you create a low tech society filled with androgynous drones then you should explain why, it needs to make sense somehow so that it is part of the story and not just an unnecessarily jarring disruption in the flow of your story. Every element of the story should further the story, making a strong presence of sexually androgynous Characters didn't further the story and just smacked of politics. ### 2/5 — Fun but Lacking *2017-03-07, version 1.0.0* Game was alright but really really short. Beat it in little more than an hour and don't really want to play it again. Feel like decisions weren't as important with the ending coming up so fast. Decisions were also more difficult than other choice games because your own status compared to others is poorly described. Ex: the part with the ladder, it doesn't say how high you are so how am I supposed to know how safe it is to jump vs throwing things at/yelling at keepers gryphons when i dont know how they will react to a thrall interference either. Needs to be cheaper for how little you get out of it if not free to get people into the others like the Choice of Heroes, which was awesome and I highly recommend. ### 2/5 — Really short. *2017-02-26, version 1.0.0* It's super short. Like really REALLY short. Throughout most of it nothing really significant happens and doesn't really have a lot of replay value. I was surprised when the ending came so suddenly. And to be honest it doesn't even feel like you actually get that much in the means of interacting with anyone not even your gryphon aside from some key story moments. ### 2/5 — A little boring, too quick *2017-02-24, version 1.0.0* The game will be over before you know it. I mean you can change the personality of the gryphon and various relationships but overall it's still the same story. (Mini spoiler ahead) Not really worth 2.99. It would have been nice to have more options and different paths when going about your exile. Overall it's fun the first time and interesting as a story ### 3/5 — Like a lot about it but can be frustrating *2017-05-16, version 1.1.0* I am not a fan of losing stats based off of decisions. I can lose a good chunk of the knowledge and charm I have gained just because I made one decision that isn't conducive to it, yet you don't gain stats every knowledge and charm check you succeed. ### 3/5 — Not my favorite story game *2017-03-22, version 1.0.0* Playing a young servant who has to decide between being diplomatically submissive or getting lectured by haughty superiors is not a fantasy to get excited about, and it's the role you're stuck in for most of the game. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — AMAZING *2021-11-24, version 1.2.4* It’s 2021, the boring year. I just found this game a week ago and I LOVE IT it is rich in story and truly beautiful. There are so many ways that you can really make to story change. You can be a mean selfish thrall only wanting to have everything for themselves or you can be a kind supportive thrall who’s everyone’s friend. And there are many more options too! You can have many different breeds of gryphon (for those of you who do not know it is just another way to spell griffin) (my favorite is personally the Owl-snow leopard, I named her Snowsong)And for those of you who play this game and love it like me, games from then I would recommend are “Choice of the Dragon” which is free, and a kitsune fox-spirit game (sorry I forgot the name) which is about the same price as this one. Anyways, I’m sorry about the lengthy review, I just felt like there was a lot to say. If you got a bit bored and just skimmed the whole review, here is the short review: Short review: I highly highly recommend this game to any fantasy lovers. I think it deserves 5 stars. DOWNSIDES Just telling you all, this game can be hard, especially because you can just click the wrong thing on accident kind of easily with a new update of swiping to choose. ———————— Again, so sorry for such a lengthy review, I’m not sure if it will even let me post it, but I again, had a lot to say, even if I repeated myself a bit. (SPOILER ALERT) My fav story was when I had a secretary and cheetah gryphon I named Quickfeather and had a romance with arvo and discovered the cure to dropfeather. I also really like your gryphon the most, of course! The fantasy world is an excellent backdrop, and explores the world of human and griffins well. I've played multiple times, and each time discover more about each of the characters. One of my issues with other stories released by Choice of Games: the gender you choose for the main character affects the gender of other characters. Since gender does affect how (and what) a character will say, this created some unlikely dialogue. This story avoids that trap: it has well drawn supporting characters who have distinct personalities, no matter the gender of the main character. It sucked me in and I couldn't put it down. ### 5/5 — Replayable Fun *2017-06-03* Runt of the litter, a choose your own path story, is intriguing and hooks you from the start. Unsurprisingly, the story was worth every cent, possessing of great vocabulary, requiring thought and many different many different ways to play. Sadly, I 'failed' the first time but you quickly learn tactics to help get a desirable ending. Advice I have to offer you, loyalty is key for any play through, ruthlessness and compassion are allowed to mingle; the story is long and sometimes a bit of compassion can help you hugely.
