## What is RVC Pet Diabetes App?

Pets with diabetes can be treated very well resulting in a good quality of life. The best results are achieved when you as a pet owner record all things that are important indicators of success or failure. The diabetes management can be fine-tuned on the basis of these, avoiding complications associated with low and high blood sugars, as well as the costs associated with such complications.

This free app was designed by pet diabetes expert Dr Stijn Niessen of the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, UK. He designed the app for two main reasons:

1. To provide diabetic pet owners with a convenient free tool to actively participate in the medical management of their beloved pet;

2. To enable the gathering of strictly anonymous data on diabetic pets and their management. This enables diabetic pet owners to actively participate in research and help develop better treatment options for pets with diabetes.

The Diabetes Log feature of the app allows users to record, and easily share with their veterinarian, all those parameters that are essential to keep an eye on when it comes to pet diabetes management; they include: clinical signs like weight, appetite, thirst and urination changes, as well as urine and blood sugar values (for those owners who perform home blood or urine glucose testing).

The app also features the following:
• a medication reminder function
• a reminder to change the insulin injection sites (avoiding inflammation of areas too frequently used)
• a scientifically validated tool which calculates and monitors quality of life
• a scientifically validated tool to score your pet’s clinical signs
• a tool to calculate the number of calories your diabetic pet likely needs
• a tool to calculate the exact amount of food your diabetic pet likely needs
• plenty of space to enter and keep save useful information (e.g. contact details of your veterinarian, important medical history, questions for your veterinarian, etc.)
• visualisation of trends (using graphs), including changes in thirst, weight, fructosamine, average blood sugar values, urine ketones or sugar values, etc.
• links to useful pet diabetes videos
• an easy “export” function enabling the sharing of entered information and graphs with anyone interested, including your veterinarian.

So, take control of your pet’s diabetes and start logging entries into the Diabetes Log. This will maximise your chances to achieve the best possible result, together with your veterinarian. Life is complicated enough, let the Royal Veterinary College Pet Diabetes App be your personal assistant to take extra good care of your furry member of the family (and automatically help pet diabetes research along the way!).

### 4/5 — Good but needs work

*2025-06-05*

This app has a lot potential and is better than a lot of the other diabetes trackers for my pet. It’s decent. One of the issues I have are the dates, they do not line up with the actual day of the week. Another is being able to go back and add days that I missed. I have a written log but I don’t always get to my device to log it everyday. And the last issue is not being able to go back from some of the tabs or folders back to the main page. You can with half of them, just not all. I have to leave the app and go back into it to get back to the main menu. If they fixed these issues it would be a good app.

### 3/5 — Why is the first on the month not a saveable date

*2024-10-01, version 2.02*

App is helpful for tracking, but there is a persistent error on the first day of any month that means it cannot be recognised as a valid date. Frustrating

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2023-12-28, version 2.02*

Does not work. Good ideas but it does not display properly. Absolutely terrible!

### 1/5 — Unreliable, thus useless

*2022-06-30, version 2.02*

After a few days use, all data disappeared and could not be retrieved. Does not accept 1 July 2022 and thus data entry cannot be saved. Useless as valuable data is lost without a back up in cloud.

### 5/5 — Thank you Team.

*2022-06-15, version 2.02*

I’ve been using this since it first came out. My dog has been diabetic since 2015 and it’s 2022. Animal Diabetes Australia and your app have helped a lot. Also your YouTube videos when my dog first diagnosed thank you :)

### 3/5 — Just OK.

*2021-11-05*

The app is setup well to track glucose levels for your pet, but only if you enter information in a timely manner. You cannot enter historical data, for example if you miss entering a reading from the day before. Also, no ability to change timezone, so the entries are always a day ahead in the US.

### 2/5 — Date issues

*2021-04-17*

The dates have to be correct for what time and date it actually is. I’ll never remember what was actually what when 3+ days appear on the same date. Making this tracking useless to me and my vet.

### 1/5 — Too complex and stupid to use, glaring flaws

*2021-01-30, version 2.02*

Downloaded RVC app. Classic case of a overly technical software created by medical professionals and programmers. I don’t need a diagnostic tool, just watching 5 minutes of any youtube vet videos can educate if your pet is sick and needs to see a vet. Did that now I know my pet has diabetes I just want to input insulin units and blood glucose test levels twice per day at a.m. and p.m. and view the data curves over time in a graph. Not doable with this app. Example: Although it defaults to 2 times per day in the insulin input window there is no a.m. or p.m. selector. It also does not allow one to go back in time and input data you may have accumulated previous to the day you downloaded the app. So useless.
Also by the lack of updates in last few years an orphaned product.

### 3/5 — Useful App - Wish I Could Amend Date on Diary

*2020-11-18, version 2.02*

This is a useful app but not good enough to send to the vet as it will always create diary and graphs for the whole period that I have been logging readings and completely ignore the dates I have put in for the diary & graphs, Which is very annoying as the report looks great. I wonder if this issue is due to updates on iPhone and the app is not entirely compatible.

### 3/5 — Day/date incorrect

*2020-08-21*

I was just getting used to this when I realized the date of the week did not coincide with the date. It kept throwing off my entries and I thought I was missing days. I thought I was entering stuff correctly and it just made it too frustrating to try to keep track in this app. I’ve gone back to writing my stuff on a regular paper calendar. Good idea, poor quality control.
