It was developed by Hesperian Health Guides, the folks that develop and publish “Where There Is No Doctor”. Their focus is helping poor people around the world take control of their own health. Their Safe Pregnancy app, like all their material, uses simple language without “medicalese”, is beautifully illustrated and medically accurate. The app concisely offers excellent advice on preventative care, pre-natal monitoring and support, as well as detailed, potentially lifesaving information on how to respond to danger signs during pregnancy and birth. Unlike most medical texts, which make the assumption that you already know the specifics (often rendering their information useless), this app offers step-by-step instructions on how to carry out each procedure with medications and technology available in developing countries. Their instructions could easily be followed by village healthworkers and midwives. I highly recommend this app to anyone, such as students, NGO workers, Peace Corp volunteers, and missionaries, who work in areas where women do not have ready access to medical care. Of all the app for pregnancy in the itunes store, this one is the worst. Giving medical advice to unqualified people and limited . Go look for another one. Any of them would be better than this. ### 1/5 — Very concerning *2013-01-19, version 1.0* If this is indeed an app for people who are in remote settings with little to no institutional back up available, the information offered herein is extremely concerning. This app is clearly based on a clinical obstetric model of care, and to advise people to apply that in a situation where there may be no clinics and no obstetricians is not only negligent, but stupid bordering on culpable. I am highly concerned by some of the information I have read in this app, and while the intention is noble, I can certainly see its practical application leading to dangerous, unnecessary and inept interventions. I'm SHOCKED that this app was even published. Doesn't apple even read the content of these app submissions???? If the assumption is that you are stuck in the North Pole with a pregnant woman with absolutely no access to medical care - fine, I guess this will do. But the danger here is that people who have absolutely no medical knowledge are being "taught" how to be a doctor. Advice such as "give magnesium sulfate if you know how" is utterly ridiculous and extremely dangerous. This is just one of many idiotic suggestions this app makes. This drug can only being given in a medically supervised setting with an IV and monitors for breathing, blood pressure, heart rate not to mention a fetal monitor. You can kill someone by giving this drug! I've read those reviews that say this is perfect for healthcare workers in remote areas, blah, blah... If you are in such as remote area where there is absolutely no health care then I highly highly doubt you will even have access to magnesium sulfate so where is the LOGIC to even advising this???? ### 3/5 — What's up with the pictures?!?! *2013-05-10, version 1.0* Wow these are the most terrifying pics about pregnancy and birth I have ever seen!!! And can't vinegar clean utensils too?
