## What is SafeCycle Toronto?

SafeCycle Toronto plans cycling routes through the city the way an experienced rider would: prefer protected bike lanes, calmer residentials, and laneways over busy arterials, even when the arterial is shorter.

The app uses Toronto's Level of Traffic Stress (LTS) data — a four-tier rating that scores every street segment by how comfortable it is to cycle on — and combines it with custom routing rules built specifically for cyclist safety.

WHAT'S DIFFERENT
• Avoids dangerous unsignalized left turns across busy streets
• Treats Toronto's laneway network as a first-class shortcut, not a last resort
• Penalizes high-stress arterials proportionally to how stressful they actually are
• Two route options on every search: "Safer" and "Faster" — compare and pick

DURING THE RIDE
• First-person camera with voice and haptic cues for upcoming turns
• Mute voice instantly from the navigation HUD
• Auto-reroute if you drift off the suggested path
• Trip history kept on-device (distance, duration), no GPS traces stored

ON THE MAP
• Streets colour-coded by traffic stress tier — green is calm, red is high-stress
• Toggle stress tiers on/off in Settings
• Map dims overlay during navigation so the route reads cleanly

PRIVACY-FIRST
• No accounts, no email signup, no advertising SDKs
• Saved places, recent searches, and ride history live only on your device
• Your location is sent to our routing server only when computing a route, not streamed

### 5/5 — Use This

*2026-07-15*

This is a fantastic tool in any cyclists arsenal to fight off those deadly vehicles.

### 4/5 — Nice idea but I wish it recommended more protected bike lanes

*2026-06-16*

I like the idea and it is an app I really wanted to use. But unfortunately the app avoids too many protected bike lanes. Some protected sections of Bloor, College, Adelaide and Richmond are considered stressful and I don’t think they are stressful at all. I understand this is very subjective (I understand you are trying to avoid parking protected lanes) and I may not be your target, but I was really hoping I could use your app because Google Maps is so bad for cycling routes recommendations.

Overall, your app is well made. But I was hoping I could use more our existing cycling infrastructure, even if that was a toggle.

### 5/5 — Amazing app for getting around

*2026-06-09*

As a frequent cycler I highly recommend this app for getting around the city!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5.0 — 2026-07-12

• NEW — Share your ride: the recap now makes a shareable card with your route traced in traffic-stress colours, your start and end neighbourhoods, and how much of the trip was on low-stress streets. Privacy included: the card trims the first stretch of your ride, and neighbourhoods are matched on-device
• Ride recap stats you can trust: duration and average speed now measure your actual riding time — reroutes, waiting at the start, or a missed arrival no longer skew them
• Better GPS hygiene: inaccurate fixes are filtered out so trip distance stays honest
• Quieter reroutes: no more "Starting route" announcement in the middle of your ride

If SafeCycle has made your rides calmer, a rating goes a long way toward helping other Toronto riders find it. And if a route could be better, tell us: support@safecycletoronto.ca — real rides shape every release.

### 1.4.0 — 2026-06-16

Focus areas:
  • Launch animation — open from cold (fully quit first). You should see
a green splash with the bike mark animating in, then a smooth fade to
the map. Confirm no flash/jump at startup.
  • Cleaner map — the idle map should be calm and uncluttered: warm land,
green parks/ravines/Islands, blue lake, and NO colored street overlay
at any zoom. There should be no "map layers" control anywhere.
  • Routing still intact — plan a route (try a "Popular rides" chip from
the search screen). Confirm the route line is still colored by stress
    (green→orange), elevation/climb shows, Safer/Faster toggles, and
    GPX/TCX export work.
  • Light & dark mode — switch the system appearance and relaunch; the
    basemap and splash should match.

Known: route saved in Settings no longer has LTS layer toggles — that's
  intentional (the overlay was removed).

### 1.3.0 — 2026-06-13

• A redesigned map. We stripped away the clutter — Toronto's bike trails
and protected lanes now stand out as clean green lines, and your route
    takes centre stage.

  • Dark mode, properly. The map now follows your phone's appearance,
switching instantly between light and dark.

  • Popular rides. Not sure where to go? Tap High Park, the Island Ferry,
Woodbine Beach and more — and get a safe route in one tap.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-06-09

What's New in 1.2.0

  • See your climb — every route now shows total elevation gain at a glance.
  • New elevation profile, color-coded by how calm or busy each stretch is, so you can spot whether a hill
falls on a quiet street or a busy road.
  • Performance and reliability improvements.
