## What is Sailing Instruments?

Plan, race, and sail smarter - all from your iPhone.

From the first beat of planning to the final gun, this app puts essential sailing instruments, tactical tools, and live wind forecasts at your fingertips - whether you're cruising the coast or counting down to the start.

Instruments
• Boat Speed (SOG) – Accurate speed over ground in knots, km/h, or mph
• Bearing & Compass – Know your heading and navigate confidently
• VMG (Velocity Made Good) – See how effectively you're sailing toward your target

Race & Tactics
• Race Timer – Easy countdown with auto-start tracking and a large, glanceable display
• Waypoint Navigation – Build a library of reusable marks and plot your course in seconds
• Wind Forecasts (Premium) – Overlay live wind across your race area, with direction, speed, and gusts shown right on the map. Scrub up to 48 hours ahead to see how the breeze will shift, and choose the forecast model that's most accurate for your waters (UK Met Office, ECMWF, GFS, and more)

Track & Review
• Route Tracking – Record your GPS track as a GPX file for post-sail analysis
• Track Playback – Replay your sail with speed, distance, and your saved marks shown in context
• Offline Support – Built for open water; no internet required after install (wind forecasts need a connection)

Modern design meets real-world sailing needs - ideal for day sailors, racers, and adventurers.

Freemium - no subscriptions, just pay once if you love it:
• Use the core instruments for free
• Try the race timer, routing, and track recorder twice, then upgrade for unlimited access
• Premium unlocks unlimited use plus live wind forecasts
• Leave us a review and reset your free trial!

This app uses your device's GPS - please ensure your device supports GPS. If GPS updates stop while using the app, try moving your device in large circles to wake it back up.

### 4/5 — Clever, simple, effective

*2026-06-19*

Great simple UI (super rare for sailing apps). Only complaint is I can’t seem to add lines to the planned route, only points

### 3/5 — Only works in one orientation

*2025-08-16*

I started the app with my tablet in landscape, and couldn’t understand why the compass heading was way off. Bringing my iPhone with a compass app open, near the tablet, caused the iPhone to become erratic as well.

I finally discovered that if I rotated the tablet so the charge port was down, the compass heading approached accuracy; with my phone compass confused, I’m assuming this app was close enough. (I’m in my RV, not sure how close to true North I’m facing.) As I rotate the iPad, Sailing Instruments’ compass went from 0 to 90 to 180 to 270 degrees off, depending on which edge was up.

Very puzzling, and dangerous to me.

**Developer response:** Hey, the way the compass is designed to work is that if you aren’t moving it will take your magnetic reading but once you are moving it will switch to take your direction of travel as your course over ground. This is because when sailing the direction of travel isn’t necessarily where you are pointing due to tidal flow and leeway.
What’s your RV use case? Maybe I can support it better. Also with the iPad if it’s not cellular it won’t have gps which could stop things working as expected.

### 5/5 — Very useful

*2025-08-11, version 1.1*

I’ve been using this for my cruiser races now, very useful and well thought out interface. I like that at the start of the race it auto starts tracking your track and swaps to the instruments display! Add a port and starboard toggle to the route.

### 2/5 — Has potential

*2025-08-10, version 1.1*

Waypoints are difficult to input using the typing function to get degrees & minutes and seconds. Also the upgrade to premium didn’t seem to work.
