We run a handicap system for our races, and every yacht has a different start time every week. Engines must be turned off at 5 min. And we generally like a 3 min warning to ensure we are on the right position to cross the line as close to our start time as possible. As most captains will know a three hour race can come down to 3 seconds between 1st and 2nd place! ### 2/5 — Could be great but… *2023-08-30* A simply designed sailing start timer available for Apple Watch. Great… it has a familiar 5 minute countdown face using 5 spheres that change color gradually. Sadly, that’s it… it doesn’t make any sounds at zero or, say, 10 sec beforehand, and sometimes just stops before zero is reached (at 7 sec to go today). And the watch face usually disappears before 5 mins have counted down. So, in its current form, it’s essentially pretty useless. A few fixes would make this a solid 5 star and very functional app but it isn’t helpful or reliable today. Perhaps it works better on an iPhone - but who holds a phone before the start of a small boat race? (Also there are no instructions…). ### 3/5 — Initially good but useless in heavy conditions *2022-09-18, version 1.2* Yacht racing is mainly in the start. Having a timer to get you on the line at the start is essential. This timer essentially works quite well and takes its display from classic watches for the same purpose. Unfortunately the Apple Watch is not good when wet and you will find it near impossible to set the timer with wet watch and wet fingers. In fine dry weather it works well. More a weakness in the watch than the app hence the middling star rating. If you are serious about yacht racing get a dedicated timer and keep the Apple Watch dry and below decks. ### 3/5 — Needs haptics & sound *2020-11-13, version 1.2* The display is clear and easy to read, and the buttons are large enough to operate, but this app could be so much more with a sound and haptic signal at each minute, every 10 second during the last minute and every second during the last 10 seconds. ### 4/5 — Don’t miss the mark. *2019-05-21* This is exactly what I was looking for. Just needs a few fixes. 1 adjust the countdown, 2 the bubbles don’t work on my watch(quite honestly not needed but looks cool) 3 some 1 minute, 30 seconds and last ten seconds either tone or vibrate on the watch. With those improvements it would be the best watch app for sailing. ### 5/5 — Great, minimalist regatta app! *2018-07-07* This app is nearly perfect for those looking for a minimalist regatta timer. I love that it counts up from 0 after the start.
