That being said, this is an excellent series that got better with every book! I like that there are permanent consequences and effects that your decisions cause, and even for someone who has a decent understanding of the samurai of this era, I like the way the choices are not obvious, and after three times through the series, I’m quite happy with the different outcomes. This is a book that is probably best for people who enjoy samurai culture and for people who are not overly squeamish! There are some mature themes - not just sexually speaking but also ethically and politically speaking! When these books are made well like this series (and Choice of Robots), it’s both engrossing and educational! Great work! I would've liked to have seen more scenes between the romance options though, especially between Masami and the ronin. Also, is Junko and the ronin also a possible ending scenario, because that would be interesting. All in all, I really enjoy this series, and I can't wait to read the next one! ### 5/5 — Interesting turning point in the series *2018-01-01, version 1.0.0* While I've know this series to definitely be one of the darkest COG there is, I was surprised just how far this game went with it. Unlike what a lot of other people are saying, I don't think the author was trying to be 'edgey' by including 'that' in the story. It's an unfortunate reality, but things like that did and still do happen, and it serves to highlight a theme running throughout the series: this land is not a place for the faint of heart. It's cruel and unforgiving and tears you down at every turn. While it certainly shocked me and I was horrified, I understood that that was the point. Hyuga is a hell filled with demons, and not just the literal ones your protagonist is sent to slay. I actually kind of liked how your protagonist was almost powerless for most of the story. Losing the Jigoku leaves them feeling empty and worthless, and it shows through the writing. I felt pleasantly frustrated when things I knew I could do before weren't going my way. It did begin to annoy me, however, when it felt as if my decisions didn't matter near the end, as if there was nothing I could do. I do agree with others in saying that the murder mystery part wasn't really executed superbly. I enjoyed it for what it was, but ultimately it felt a bit halfbaked, like clues were loosely stitched together with no real substance connecting them and like it was impossible to fail it. Maybe if the author refined it a bit more and released a separate game, one focused entirely on mystery, it might work better and be more engaging. A good effort, but definitely could have been done better. I look forward to the next book in this series! This has easily become one of my favorite COG games so far. I love the author's style and ability to characterize the protagonist so easily through the first person perspective while still leaving the player a good deal of input as the player that is usually seen in games that adopt the second person perspective. Can't wait to see book 4! P.S. Masami is best girl! There'd better be a romance route for her coming up! ### 5/5 — Wow *2017-12-20* This game just makes me feel so much. I've been following the series since it first game out all those years ago, and I can say, this is the best story based game of this sort I've ever read/played. I've never been so proud, happy, frustrated, crestfallen, angry, and then hurt (in that order) with any other game of any genre. The story is wonderful, but the way the game plays out to let you make choices just makes it /that/ much more personal and gets you /that/ much more invested. Right when you start feeling happy for the main character, a chapter later, and you realize that this happiness really can't last and is only making her dull, which both she and I don't want. We want happiness, but we both know we can't and I just— This game is just absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend it. I'll be eagerly awaiting the fourth instalment. ### 5/5 — Can’t wait for book 4 *2017-12-16, version 1.0.0* I’ve read all 3 books and have become hooked on this story and can’t wait to see what happens as you go through all the books you can’t help but become this filthy robin hired by a powerful family as a body guard then dragged into a demon hunt by the emperor himself and finding out about junko the demons and the possible lovers of the ronin so all in all I give this book and story’s a huge 5 stars and encourage everyone to give it a read ### 5/5 — Amazing as always *2017-12-10, version 1.0.0* I absolutely loved the 4th however there were certain points where no matter what choice you choose you were penalized. Can’t wait for the next book! ### 5/5 — Spoilers *2017-12-09, version 1.0.0* Let’s take it down from the top: Story- I’d say the main draw of this series is the story. That seems a bit redundant to say in a CYOA medium, but it’s surprising how hard it is to find a competently written story in the medium. People get bogged down a bit too much in the self-insert aspect to expect anything approaching quality. This is pretty fair stuff, in my opinion. This entry was a bit edgier than the last two, certainly, but it also provided a conclusion to two arcs that flowed naturally in the bounds of what’s happened previous. I don’t think you can ask for much more. Characters- The cast of the series is well written. They have personality, good chemistry, and always have lively comments that make them feel like actual people rather than emotionless zany quip-machines. One character I have a bit of an issue with is Kohaku. Overall, she’s an okay character in a vastly superior cast, and that’s because she was the one character who shouldn’t have been glossed over like a side character. She ends up coming off as unnecessarily abrasive initially, before heel-turning into a devout follower of the Ronin’s Tohno Gland within the span of a quarter of a day. That’s fine, but definitely not for a major love interest. At least Toshie got 3 books to do that. Specifics- People are complaining about the Ronin’s “OOC-ness”, which I think is a common issue if you go into this expecting a blank slate. The Ronin has more in common with a Geralt rather than a Revan, and basically populates the narration like the Mugen/Musashi/dad expy that he is. The first indication, really, is the first person perspective. The detective part is surprising to me, if only that people thought it was too intensive for this type of story. It’s basically impossible to fail, considering how much Toshie spoonfeeds you, but it was a neat mystery to unfold. While I doubt it’ll show up again, I certainly didn’t mind this section of the game. Overall, it’s worth 7 bucks. For something that actually felt like a quality 200,000 words, I’d say it was well worth it. If Masami doesn’t get a romance option, I’m editing this to a one-star review. ### 5/5 — Great *2017-12-04, version 1.0.0* This was very good. I actually like this then part two. They were fun stories, they had a pleasant mix of adventure, humor, fighting, romance, and immersion in the world of Hyuga. While the stories were mostly on rails, the choices provoked different responses, and it was fun to try to see how “attuned” your character could be with the optimal path. This third entry is a depressing story with characters of questionable sympathy, run-on text in need of an editor, and choices that are meaningless to the story while penalizing the reader arbitrarily. the choices feel more appropriate to a reading comprehension exam than a choice driven narrative. To his credit author tried to innovate with the text entry option for some choices but that was also a complete failure. Due to the limitations of ChoiceScript, readers cannot go back and read previous text. Does the author expect us to be taking notes so that we can guess the key word at the right moment? This fails as a game. It fails as a story. It kills any interest I had in future entries. Give it a pass. ### 2/5 — This isn’t Phoenix Wright *2017-12-06, version 1.0.0* Please don’t do anymore of this detective crap in the fourth one. That isn’t why I read these. 😒 ### 3/5 — Love the series so far *2019-01-07, version 1.0.1* This particular chapter left very little room for error in its later stages, and overall I finished it with the sense of “none of my choices had any bearing on these results”. I’m hoping the next release is more engaging. ### 3/5 — Alright *2017-12-22, version 1.0.0* While the story is as good as always, I was a little put off by just how week the ronin came off as by the end of the book. I get that they’re changing and have to fail every now and again, but they sort of came off as more a supportive but troubled mentor than a main character ### 3/5 — Warning: There’s mentions of pedophilia and an optional rape scene. *2017-12-03, version 1.0.0* On that note, this is the most well programmed and well written of any of Devon’s works. He addressed several issues with the previous book and it feels like he really wanted to deliver a good story. The emotion of the protagonist and their hurt was great and I liked seeing how much he could take away from them before they broke. The new characters absolutely stole the show (and Hatch’s character arc is great). That said, the Romance is by far the weakest part of the game and—individually— the romance scenes were theoretically very romantic (hot springs, dramatic rescues, and massages) but in context they were rushed and creepy. If u didn’t want to romance specific characters Your Ronin would be very OOC. It was worse than Momoko’s from the last book. And the above warnings. The game should have warned you at the beginning, and even though both are optional/missable that doesn’t mean they should BE THERE. It felt like Devon wanted to be edgy. ### 3/5 — Pretty good *2017-12-02, version 1.0.0* Didn’t like the detective stuff but otherwise good game. ### 4/5 — Story is fantastic, not so sure about the choices *2019-05-25, version 1.0.1* Let me start off by saying I love this series. The writing is sharp and witty, albeit with a few misses; the characters are compelling; there's a good balance between comedy and drama (and action, and romance, and psychological horror). I think this third book does a good job continuing those trends-- and the trend of leaving the reader in suspense at the end, too, which is somewhat frustrating but effective. However, with this third book, I noticed a lot more choices that are based on selecting one correct answer than selecting answers that will cause slightly different things to happen. And that frustrated me somewhat. Still, I'll definitely be getting Book 4 when it comes out, and I still highly recommend this app to anyone who liked the first two installments in the series. ### 4/5 — Sexually Confused *2018-01-15, version 1.0.0* So does the female samurai just forget that she loved you or did i miss her romance scene?? ### 4/5 — Pretty Amazing *2018-01-04, version 1.0.0* Like the first two, it’s funny, dramatic, and intense. The characters are fun and engaging and when you get a good run with the choices it’s great. It’s written incredibly well and the scenes play out in my head like a movie (or an anime, depends on the mood). The only issue is how severe the penalties are with the spiritual attunement. This may just be an issue with me not being very good at the game, but sometimes the choices can be very vague, so you make a mistake which sometimes can cost you dearly. While trying to gain it back, it can seem middling at best. Whether the above issue is a big or a small one depends on you. Personally, I feel the game is definitely worth playing and another great text adventure from Choice of Games. ### 4/5 — Different *2017-12-28, version 1.0.0* I've read all of the books and I loved them! The first one was the best and the second was good to. This one however was different. I felt like near the ending choices didn't matter. It was dark which wasn't IF I'm the ba Ronin who kills enemies and dirty Samurai. It deals with some heavy themes, but it deals with them well. The characters are unique and very different from each other, the plot is exciting, and the main character has a strong influence and personality while still being completely unique and customizable by the player, if that makes sense. As someone with Chinese heritage it’s so refreshing to see a game set in East Asia. All too often, other games subconsciously write for western characters and settings in mind (not a bad thing by all means) but it feels so incredibly good to have a game set in Japan that references Asian things, culture, and customs. The series itself is also amazingly well written. Very replayable, and it leaves me longing for each new book every time.
