### 1/5 — Apple’s Private Relay breaks the newsfeed

*2021-10-12, version 9.1.3*

Apple’s Private Relay when activated in iOS 15 breaks the newsfeed. The newsfeed indicates an error updating.

Disable Private Relay and the newsfeed returns to normal functionality.

It’s obvious that McClatchy does not like the user tracking disabled when Private Relay is enabled.

So much for disclosure on the amount of these news apps track your internet behavior.

### 1/5 — Literally the worst app on my iPad

*2021-08-31*

It stops constantly stops working, and customer service says the same thing every time (when you can actually get them to respond) “ delete the app and re-install it. Do you have any idea how many times I’ve had to do that? This isn’t even taking into account the myriad of problems when the app actually works. They should be embarrassed.

**Developer response:** We apologize for the issues with the app. We will share this feedback with our team and work to get this resolved.

### 1/5 — No obituaries

*2021-08-25, version 9.1*

I am sad to see you have excluded obituaries. Cancelled my subscription after 25 years

### 1/5 — Extremely disappointing

*2021-03-15, version 8.0.1*

Very buggy, difficult to search. I have to re sign in ad nauseum. Frankly the ap is as bad as the “reporting.”

### 1/5 — Bad change

*2021-02-05*

The new changes are terrible. I copy the puzzle page and now it does not print correctly. In addition, to read an article, now you have to touch each article to make it readable. The old edition was much better. Please consider to going back to that app

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2020-12-01, version 7.10.1*

Using the app, I am unable to read or reply to the comment sections after the articles. I have sent notes to the help center hoping to correct this problem and have never heard back anything.

### 1/5 — New and improved its worse than it was

*2020-11-14, version 7.10.0*

Bad doesn’t work

### 1/5 — App can’t remember who I am

*2020-09-18, version 7.9.2*

I’m paying for a subscription yet this app can’t ever seem to remember that, it just gets hung up logging me in to my account.

### 1/5 — Terrible configuration

*2020-02-14, version 7.5.0*

Can you please go back to a configuration where we can read the digital paper page by page with a full screen view.

### 1/5 — Irritating

*2020-02-09, version 7.5.0*

This new app is t easy to use with my iPad or iPhone . So,e days I can’t even access the paper! The first page does t come out clear until I turn the page and go back. I’m govi g it a big thumbs down👎

### 3/5 — 24/7 customer service phone laughable

*2020-02-01*

After calling to express difficulty and displeasure in reading e-Edition, I phone the 24/7 customer service phone number which promptly told me they were ‘really’ only available M-F during normal business hours.
As other readers have mentioned, the following problems exist:
Endless loop of login
Unwanted ads
Slow

### 1/5 — I’m done. Figure it out, Tribune.

*2020-01-28, version 7.5.0*

I just unsubscribed. This has been a disaster of a service. I’ve loaded, reloaded, cleared caches, emailed customer service...aaaand I’m done. It still tells me to subscribe and then confirms...THAT I AM. What a shame - as a SLO native, I really wanted to support The Tribune but they’ve made it impossible.

### 1/5 — Change to App

*2019-12-18, version 7.5.0*

I also find the changes very trying. It is almost impossible to read the paper through the small window. Please go back to the earlier version.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — New and improved its worse than it was

*2026-04-08, version 11.1.1*

Bad doesn’t work cannot read pages stop

### 1/5 — Sign in

*2026-04-06, version 11.1.1*

Sign in constantly doesn’t work. Support does not return requests for help.

### 1/5 — Even worse than before

*2026-03-04, version 11.1.1*

Just when you think it couldn't get any worse, it gets worse. Still, as bad as it is, it is not as bad as it's reporting.

### 1/5 — Login screen endlessly reloads

*2024-12-12*

Despite being a paying subscriber ($35/month), I am unable to access content because I am taken back to the login screen each time I try to sign in with verified credentials. Once I fell for the trap of “renewing access” and wound up with two paid subscriptions. Luckily I got wise to that and killed the duplicate subscription so I am no longer being charged $70 a month for news I can’t read. I am all for supporting local journalism, but maybe it’s time to go back to a hard copy newspaper because this app is simply unusable and, despite poor reviews going back a few years now, the company seems uninterested in fixing the app or retaining subscribers. Is this how local journalism dies in the 21st century?

### 1/5 — App does not let you sign in.

*2024-06-13, version 10.0.3*

The update to the app now does not allow the sign in page to work. Please fix it. I regret updating because I cannot access the content.

### 1/5 — Can’t stay on article

*2023-08-10*

I’d love to support the Tribune, but I’m probably a few days away from canceling my digital subscription. The phone app is how I access the Tribune. When I click on an article, I have about 2-3 seconds before it automatically transports me back to the home page. I can’t read anything! I was advised to delete and reinstall the app, which I did - no improvement. Come on people, make it better.

**Developer response:** We are sorry for the issues you are experiencing with the app. This is not the experience you should be receiving. Please email us customerservice@mcclatchy.com with your contact information as we would like to help assist you. Thank you.

### 1/5 — Plagiarizing others investigative work

*2022-09-21, version 9.1.6*

Skimming the outline of stories,as barley even stepping foot on the curb let alone walking the sidewalk leading to where a story may led their
Inquisitive nose, seems their legmen much rather walk the easy streets, never wanting to ruffle feathers of those pulling the strings controlling the show.
If considering thought of delivery to their publications, first consider the cost of what their delivering.

As in anything, even with the negative is the positive, the editorials, thoughts, and opinions of others helps keep the world spinning, too the cartoons, and, yes perhaps help to relax while sitting, reading in our favorite reading room.

### 1/5 — Frustrating experience

*2022-08-10*

App update took three days to sign in, three talks with customer service before I could read the new, downsized e-edition. 1-Star for the whole situation. Had no problem with the app before this revision. Appreciate the developer response.

**Developer response:** Contact our Customer Service Team at customerservice@thetribunenews.com to check the account.

### 1/5 — Bad app bad paper

*2022-01-28, version 9.1.5*

I’ve been sorely disappointed in both the digital user experience and the content of the paper. Cal Poly’s university newspaper has much more journalistic integrity than the slo tribune. Not worth it.

### 1/5 — News feed broken in iOS 15

*2021-12-10, version 9.1.5*

The news feed no longer displays any news in the latest version of iOS

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Working Very Well on iPAD

*2026-03-04*

I used to get very frustrated when I viewed the pages on my iPhone or galaxy tablet. But now that I’m using a newer iPad, everything is clearer and the menus of content are easier to navigate.

**Developer response:** Dear Valued Subscriber, Thank you for the positive feedback. Customer Care

### 5/5 — Great way to stay informed!

*2024-06-12*

Supporting our local news source is important for our community. The Tribune does an excellent job providing news both local and global. The app provides all the news I need to feel current on our communities concerns, challenges and celebrations.

### 5/5 — Beta version rocks!!

*2021-01-16*

You’ve done everything right with this version. It was painful getting there, but we’re loving it. Thank you.

### 5/5 — Slow but good

*2019-01-24*

No complaints with the app. Only thing is that it is a little slow when you change sections. Not bad enough to ding it a star.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2014-04-11, version 4.8.0.0*

It's so great to stay in touch with local events in my hometown through this app! Everything has worked great for me with this so far.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2011-08-15, version 1.0*

Mugshots are great. I wish they could add a link to the story that goes with the picture. I also like that you can just read the story and not see the annoying comments from the public.

### 4/5 — Review

*2019-12-08*

This new app is terrible. I’m thinking of canceling my subscription. I used to enjoy reading the Tribune while on the road. Not any more! It’s too darned frustrating.

### 3/5 — Updates

*2026-06-27*

Enjoy your paper but can’t view on an older IPad after your update. I’m forced to read it on my phone which is not ideal..

### 3/5 — Serious Formatting Problems

*2026-05-11*

Content is adequate, even if it reprints MAGA right wing op-ed pieces without context. The problem is that the daily edition has so many formatting problems, and is based on really bad decisions, that it can be unreadable.

**Developer response:** Dear Value Subscriber, Please email us at wecare@mcclatchy.com with what issues you are having so we can help you. Thank you, Customer Care.

### 3/5 — New Tribune app.

*2026-03-04*

Here we go 'round in circles! Try. To open tribune, tribune tells me to update and sends me to App Store, App Store sends me to page that tells me to update app. Rinse and repeat.

**Developer response:** Dear valued subscriber, I'm sorry for the issue you are experiencing. The lastes version of the app requires iOS 17.1+, so older iPads that can't upgrade won't be able to run it. To make sure you can still access the app without interruption, we can provide a tablet device that's compatible and will work wih the Tribune app right away. If you would like to proceed, email us at wecare@mcclatchy.com and include: Your full name, Mailing Address, Best phone number (optional, for delivery questions). Once we receive that, we'll get the replacement tablet arranged and share the next steps. Thank you, Customer Care.
