## What is SAS?

Do you sometimes feel like your words are stuck in your mouth and just won't come out? This app will help you practice becoming a more fluent speaker by increasing self-awareness and confidence through mastering challenges of increasing difficulty.

We surveyed a large number of speech-language pathologists and people who stutter to create the perfect self-help tool for you. Your therapist may also use this tool to monitor your success as you become more and more fluent.

You can record your attempts at each challenge and save and/or send to your speech therapist or a close friend. You may even choose to post your attempts to a stuttering forum for others to see and share in your successes.

This app also includes a journal you can use to track and manage your feelings about your speech over time.

Lastly, this app includes a list of evidence-based methods for achieving fluency with voice examples from speech-language pathologist Dr. Givona Sandiford. You can practice each method and decide which, if any, are best for you.

In this updated version of the app we've added at your request the following amazing features: a mute sound button, multiple users options, new sound effects, a save progress option, and a jump to a harder challenge option! We value our users and thank you for your awesome suggestions and support!

### 3/5 — Has potential but I can't use it

*2018-01-05, version 1.0*

I am a speech therapist and bought this tool to help a high school student with initial stages of fluency therapy. He has never worked with a professional on fluency before so I have the opportunity to help him reframe the experience. Stuttering is annoying but not wrong or bad. It does not constitute a mistake when we stutter. It is part of who we are. We can affect it, as we can change our hair style, or learn or drop an accent. That is what speech therapy is for. But if we can accept stuttering as we would our hair color or shoe size, and expect others to accept it, too, then we can leave behind fear/shame and focus on noticing speech patterns and experimenting with what causes effective change and what does not in the attitude of a scientist. He is the Ph.D candidate and I am the advisor. Not a teacher and student, because I am not the expert. He will become the expert.

So when I tested this app, I did a voluntary stutter for each word, recording and labeling the type of disfluency. Unfortunately it made a "you're wrong" noise and invited me to try again. I was hoping to use this for baseline testing, but I am not about to expose him to that kind of criticism. It is not wrong. It is what it is. No judgement need be made. A "task complete" noise would be appropriate.

Also 1) the sounds are a bit immature for high school. 2) the sounds play all the time even if my phone is on silent. It would be nice to have the ability to turn them off. 3) it would be nice to have a top menu to choose what I want to do. 4) it would be nice to be able to create multiple student profiles and save recordings to help us track change.

Thanks

**Developer response:** Hi Working Mom with Kids, those are some great ideas! We value the suggestions of our users and believe in peer collaboration! We are currently working on updates to this app and will be sure to let you know when new features are available. As for saving recordings to help track change, simply choose "start recording" in the challenge you are trying, then choose "stop recording" when complete. You will then choose "share." To save to your device, choose "add to notes" or to save to another device choose "mail" or "message." The sound should not play when the volume is all the way down. We will look into this. Thank you again for choosing to support the work of fellow SLPs when you shop!
