## What is Saucy Cup?

A two-store halal cafe in North Jersey (Elmwood Park and Wayne) is building its own Starbucks-style ordering app rather than renting one from a POS vendor. Today customers are split across three third-party services, none of which tell the business who its regulars are — owning that customer relationship is the whole point.

WHAT IT DOES

Order-ahead with real, capped pickup-time slots, so a ticket doesn't hit the kitchen screen until it's time to make it. The full 81-item menu with 39 modifier groups and 165 options, every one priced correctly. Points-based rewards at 50, 80 and 120 points. Cup Cash preloaded balance. Saved favourites for one-tap reorder. Live order status and a ready text for remote orders only, always triggered by a human tap rather than a timer. Size, milk, and hot-or-iced must be answered before an item can be added — no defaults. Allergies get their own field and jump the kitchen queue, framed as informational rather than a guarantee.

THE STRUCTURAL BETS

No Clover integration. Payments run direct through Stripe; menu, loyalty, wallet, queue and kitchen screens are all in-house. This is explicit groundwork for replacing Clover as the POS entirely.

One source of truth. The menu is generated from the real data export and shared by app, register and manager screen, with a test asserting all 81 prices match. Doing this surfaced actual losses: two high-volume lattes ringing 75–80¢ over menu, every large signature drink about 50¢ light, Mango Refresher at $6.50 instead of $3.99, and no extra-shot modifier existing anywhere.

Cup Cash bonuses are points, not dollars — deliberately, to avoid refundable and escheatable liability under New Jersey unclaimed-property rules. Loads are booked as liability, never revenue, and the balance can't go negative, enforced in the database after an early bug let $30 be spent from $20. The feature stays switched off pending accountant sign-off.

BUILD

PWA first, Postgres, Stripe, local Epson printers each polling their own address, 281 automated tests, offline-capable register. Roughly $60–100 a month to run, plus about $1,539 in hardware per store.

STATUS

Customer app, register, kitchen display, manager screen, refunds, offline mode and menu import are done. The shared server tier, photos, hosting and live Stripe keys are not. Elmwood Park opened 21 August on Clover deliberately; Wayne is the pilot site, on a five-week rollout.

RISKS, HONESTLY

It's a lot of software for two stores. Staff have to actually use it under pressure. Customer adoption is a months-long habit change. And Cup Cash carries real legal obligations that need sign-off before launch.
