As I’ve got older, I’ve wanted to learn Welsh out of interest and because it’s my heritage. I was put off by the thought of night school and then I discovered this app. In fact I’d seen the app mentioned and spoken about in various places and decided to give it a go. I’m so, so pleased that I did. I’m thoroughly enjoying the course and love the playful, relaxed approach to learning. None of the obsession with grammatical or technical niceties that you get in academic settings. The first 7 challenges are free which is a very generous amount of content for Ssiw to provide free of charge. Access to the whole course and content costs just £10 a month. I’m still on the free ones but I won’t hesitate to subscribe once I’ve completed them. I never expected learning Welsh to be so addictive or fun. If you can play a game on your phone or tablet you can definitely learn Welsh. They go at a nice pace with two speakers saying the words. You build a large working vocab pretty quickly, with a large number of free lessons. The bad thing is it takes almost half an hour to do it properly to begin with but it is still clear ### 5/5 — Can't recommend enough *2019-08-09* This is hands down the best app I've come across for learning to speak a language. Duolingo and others are great for building vocabulary, but SSiW forces you to think on your feet and actually speak the language in real time. After each challenge, the progress you've made feels substantial. There's also a great forum of fellow learners and mentors as an additional resource. If you download this app, I highly encourage you to rate and review it everywhere possible, so the developers can continue their phenomenal work with more languages (fingers crossed for Swedish). ### 5/5 — This is the first time I’ve made real progress on learning Welsh *2019-05-23, version 2.18* The app is only part of the package which includes forums and live online Welsh conversation sessions as well as face to face meetings and conversations. It is focussed on teaching you to speak Welsh and works in the same way that a child growing up would learn the family’s language. There are no books and you are encouraged not to make notes just mistakes as a way of cementing the language in your brain. There are three levels as well as advanced speaking after that. Each level has 25 challenges and level one is free. Level 2 and 3 are subscription based but not expensive. I have been following the course for more than 18 months now and I’m halfway through level 2. I can honestly say that I’ve learnt more Welsh than when I was in school in Wales and when I went to night school in my twenties. It is, as most of these reviews confirm, an excellent way to learn Welsh and I can’t praise it enough. Try level one for free and if you really want to learn Welsh it will get you speaking simple Welsh very quickly. It's exciting, fun and thoroughly supported by a huge and friendly community in their forum and various programs. There is PLENTY of free material to get you started, and courses for very reasonable prices, if you want to dive in deeper. There are also tons of resources to expand further if you lurk around the forum enough. Hint: ask about the free Welsh Speaking Practice group, that meets in online hangouts and online one on one chats!! I'm feeling very grateful to have found this supportive community. Understanding native speakers and being able to speak the language oneself is crucial. Welsh, at least for this native American-English speaker in the beginning phases of learning, is difficult to speak and to pronounce, even harder to understand. This app makes all those difficulties seem much, much easier, and I am very appreciative of the way the developers constructed the lessons. Inspiring and supportive forum. Would thoroughly recommend, trust the method. Just spent twenty minutes chatting with a stranger with nearly everything said in Welsh after only two years learning from no Welsh at all. Can be done quicker than this old brain. ### 5/5 — Best App to Learn Welsh *2018-04-24* Unlike other apps I’ve tried, Say Something in Welsh, approaches teaching the language in an immersive style. Its all audio, so listening during a commute or walking the dog is a convenient way to learn for me. It’s a speak and repeat. You learn the infrastructure necessary allowing new words to be easily augmented. Starting off with “I,” a transition to “you,” “he/she” sentences are added in subsequent challenges. The app remembers where you stopped in each challenge to begin when you return. Every five challenges a new recorded Welsh dialog is presented to challenge your listening skills. Practical sentences are taught from the beginning and each challenge adds to the previous. You won’t hear sentences like, “the cat is black,” rather you learn, “I speak Welsh,” and “I’ve been learning for about a month.” By the 18th challenge I can say, “I went out last weekend with a few friends and had a good time. And I met someone who told me something interesting.” You will learn different tenses (present, past, future, plus the others I can’t remember,) without being told as in a traditional language class. Because of the structure of the challenges, the words and phrases you learn can be combined/mixed to create new sentences not taught. You are not stuck with learning phrases specific to one situation. This app makes learning Welsh fun. Also, there is an online forum where you can ask questions and learn further. So much effort has been placed into this app, it’s really difficult to fail and it’s FREE! Amazing. As it’s free, I won’t complain but I do suggest adding additional resources to supplement the app. I purchased an English to Welsh dictionary by Heinl Gruffudd. My only criticism to this app is no sentences covering greetings. At least by the 18th challenge there are none. The best I could say would be to interject with, “Could you say it again?” There are plenty of online resources to learn basic greetings as well as Welsh sentence structure. Welsh is verb-subject-object. English is subject-verb-object. For me this app coupled with online resources for sentence structure, basic greetings and purchasing a dictionary, I’ve learned more Welsh in 3 months then I would have learned in a year’s worth of classes in an educational setting. To the creator of the app, I say, “Diolch yn fawr iawn,” Thank you very much. ### 5/5 — Brilliant *2018-04-16, version 2.17* I’ve been learning now for a bit over a month and I’m already having conversations in welsh with other welsh speakers. This program has a great system. It’s fun it lets me do the lessons while I’m doing something else. It doesn’t focus on grammar or word lists and yet you naturally learn the rules as you go without even realising it. The forum is great for just about everything and the best part is the encouragement and support to start talking in real life as soon as possible with many options for welsh in the wild as well as online available. The first level is free and the rest are quite well priced. Brilliant. I can’t thank you enough. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — £10 A MONTH *2024-05-29, version 2.23* Used to love this, but unfortunately you’ve put up a paywall and are charging £10 a month for every lesson except the first one. This is extremely expensive in the middle of a cost of living crisis, so unfortunately I will now be not learning Welsh because I can’t afford £10 a month, especially as existing content was already available for free, and now I can’t even see lessons I previously listened to. I understand that there are costs involved but TEN POUNDS a month! To access content I already had. ### 1/5 — Why the high subscription?! *2021-10-04, version 2.23* I started using this last year and it was brilliant, have come back to it and couldn’t work out why I now can’t access any levels and it’s because it’s now £10 per month subscription. I was devastated to open it and see you can now only access levels and such after the intro by paying £10 subscription a month!!!! Such a high subscription. I can’t believe they have made such an amazing resource unavailable now to so many people. It was one of the only free learning welsh resources available, and had joined the bandwagon of everything else, making as much money as possible, in the midst of a crisis when people have more time to now learn Welsh, but less money. A true shame! Clearly more interesting in earning money than spreading the Welsh language, although they will guise it as earning caption to spread the language. I can’t find any info here on the App Store telling me it’s a subscription service. Sorry, £10pm is too much. Maybe add a price to download all challenges in one go. I sometimes get confused between regions, especially for words like ‘ey-shoh’ or as I know it ‘ey-shy’. ### 5/5 — I love this app! *2024-07-13* Say Something in Welsh is phenomenal approach to language learning. I’m just getting started, but I’ve listened to the first lesson several times and already feel like I can show off some useful phrases. It’s obvious that in no time, I’ll be adding more vocabulary to those phrases and have many options for sentences that I can actually use when I visit Wales. Welsh is such a musical language, and the host of this podcast has a lovely voice and cadence. I find myself wanting to turn it on when I’m doing housework or exercising or driving in the car, just to hear the lovely speakers. I can’t recommend this enough! The first 25 lessons used to be free. The team do need money to get things to work and to live. If you want to learn to speak Welsh this course will do it, it really works. If you have problems get on the forum and chat, others will have had exactly the same problems. If you really do not have money ask SSIW to help. Once you can say things in Welsh you need to get out (or online)and use the language that’s how you continue to learn. Once you can talk then get some Gareth King grammar books and learn how to write.
