What is a scale? For most people it is a collection of pitches within one octave, with equal temperament (all half tone steps equally long) or with microtonal intonation. That kind of scales are of course possible to make and edit in ScaleGen which gives you a keyboard with complete control of up to 24 pitches within one octave. But the most interesting things with ScaleGen is when you start to think of a scale as something more open. Consider these questions: What if your scale was different in every octave? Why must a scale always go from down to up? What if you could use a variation of the overtone series as a scale? How does it sound if you divide the octave in five steps instead of twelve? In ScaleGen we define a scale as any list of MIDI pitches that you can manipulate in many ways. You can start with a keyboard to input pitches, you can use the concept of the overtone series with multiplication of frequencies, you can define the number and size of the steps in the scale or you can import MIDI files and use them as scales. Then you can fine-tune your scale in a matrix with a number of tools. You can then try and play your scale directly in the app, using built-in sounds or control your favorite external synthesizer/app through MIDI. Qui aurai pu imaginer piloter autant d'instruments du bout des doigts. merci pour ces pepites !!! ### 3/5 — Configuring pitch bend is an essential but missing feature *2022-05-21* Overall this is a great app, but I am not sure if it is dead. At least the email address in the built in user guide is. So I post it here: Gestrument allows the pitch bend range for outgoing MIDI to be configured. ScaleGen is missing this feature. Please add it as this is essential for matching the app to some hardware synthesisers. ### 5/5 — Possibilities realized! Except for one.. *2020-08-04* I have been using ScaleGen since it was first released, mostly to generate microtonal scales for the few iOS synths that support “alternate” tuning. Now that more music app developers are realizing that 12 equally-spaced notes leaves out a vast universe of possible scales, this app comes in very handy when I need to generate a .scl file but cannot or don’t feel like firing up a whole other computer. The one thing missing from ScaleGen is the ability to generate .tun files as well. Those still have to be edited by hand, which is a pain. But it gets five stars because it has been around for so long and helped to put just intonation and other tunings onto the iOS radar. Add .tun files and I will imagine ten stars for you. ### 5/5 — Amazing *2019-08-04* As a INDIAN classical music practitioner, this is a boon. Only lament is that I don’t know how to export to Gestrument Pro.
