## What is Scanity?

Scan a food barcode. Scanity reads the ingredient list and checks it against your own blocklist — then tells you plainly: safe, caution, or avoid.

No opaque health score. No brand's opinion of what is good for you. Your rules, and the evidence that led to the verdict.

WHAT IT CHECKS
• Artificial dyes — 6 certified colour additives, and their aliases
• Seed oils — canola, soybean, sunflower and 8 more
• Added sugar syrups — HFCS, isoglucose, corn syrup
• Ultra-processed markers — emulsifiers, isolates, flavourings
• Gluten, dairy and soy, including cross-contact grains
• Anything else you type in — aspartame, MSG, carrageenan, titanium dioxide, or your own list

SHOWS ITS WORKING
Every verdict names the rule that produced it. Open Decode and see the label exactly as printed, then every token resolved against your rules — what matched, what did not, and which alias fired. If Scanity flags something, you can check why.

BUILT NOT TO GUESS
Matching is whole-word, so "malt" never fires inside "maltodextrin". A blocked ingredient counts once, however many aliases it has. When an ingredient is unknown, Scanity says unknown — it never reports a clean result it cannot back up.

NO ACCOUNT, NO PROFILE
There is nothing to sign up for. Your blocklist and your scan history live in local storage on your device — they are never uploaded, and there is no account to attach them to. Scanning a barcode sends that barcode to look the product up, and nothing else.

YOUR LOG IS A RECORD, NOT A GUESS
Every scan is kept with the verdict it got and the rules that produced it. Change a filter later and old entries do not silently rewrite themselves — they are marked as scanned under different rules.

WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM
Ingredient data is built on USDA FoodData Central, with Open Food Facts filling in products USDA does not carry. Both are open databases you can check for yourself.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 2.0.0 — 2026-08-22

Scanity 2.0 is a complete rebuild.

Version 1 was a React Native app. Version 2 is written from scratch in Swift, and you can feel it: the app opens faster, the camera locks onto a barcode faster, and the verdict comes back sooner.

Every screen was redrawn on the way — the scan view, the verdict card, your filters, and the history log. The verdict card now shows its working more clearly, so the ingredient that triggered a flag is easier to find at a glance.

Same rules, same evidence, same three verdicts. Just quicker, and easier to read one-handed in an aisle.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-08-08

• Upgrade to Lifetime — premium subscribers can now switch to a one-time Lifetime plan from Settings.
• Redeem promo codes — a new Redeem option in Settings and on the Paywall opens the system code sheet.
• Trial-end reminders — get a heads-up two days before your trial ends (opt-in during onboarding).
• Privacy-first onboarding — we've replaced the info step with a notifications permission screen, so nothing gets shared without your explicit consent.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-07-22

No release notes.
