However there doesn’t appear to be any option for this in the app despite looking everywhere. It’s a good app but the description is misleading hence the 3 stars. ### 2/5 — no app development *2017-10-04, version 1.1* that’s the thorn. ### 5/5 — Ambient, generative, musical, creative, meditative *2014-10-22, version 1.1* Anyone who likes Eno's ambient music (or his collaborators like Budd or Hassell) should get this app. As other reviewers have pointed out, the inbuilt "presets" mean you basically get an Eno album for free. The app works by allowing you to add visual objects and backgrounds to the screen which correspond to audio elements (drones, synth pads, drums, brief note sequences). The elements interact and change over time. You can then string these together as a "playlist" to create the equivalent of an ambient album where individual ambient tracks fade n and out of each other. I use this app all the time. As in every day. In a noisy workplace like mine, it's brilliant to push out unwanted background noise and replace it with an ambient that I find very beneficial for concentration and studying. If, like so many of us, you're stuck in an environment where you can't control the background hubbub (which for me os a constant low level irritation) then this is worth a try. I plan to use it next time I'm on a long plane trip. ### 4/5 — Almost a Perfect App *2014-09-16, version 1.1* This is an enthralling app that has engaged my creativity. Usually, an app will fall by the wayside or even be deleted. Only a very few apps continue to hold my attention. Scape has grabbed hold like no other app has. The wish list for most apps is huge since they need lots of help improving their concepts or fixing bugs. Scape only has a few: 1. Naming playlists. 2. Editing existing playlists by adding and rearranging scapes. 3. Combining moods. 4. Make Scapes extensible so I can make it my own with new moods, backgrounds, and elements that use my own sounds and rules. Well done Brian and Peter! Well done indeed. ### 4/5 — Soundscape times *2014-08-03, version 1.1* I purchased this based on my good times with Bloom. Great follow-up? Spent hours just building and tweaking. It relaxes me. I'd ask for a few more sounds along the minimalistic lines but that's it. Perhaps some ambient space themes. But what do I know. The interface is simplistic which forces me not to complicate but rather immerse and enjoy? ### 3/5 — A little stale... *2014-07-08, version 1.1* Same bank of cheesy new age sounds that have been around since late 80s... and graphics to match. If that's what you're looking for, then you'll love this. Almost no control over the evolution of the 'scape' and documentation is completely absent. Overall, the music and visuals seem to be stuck in another decade.. kinda like that person you know who looked in the mirror 25 years ago and said, "ahh...there's my look" and never moved on. I know this is a little harsh. Obviously a ton of work and thought went into it. But, if I were an artist on the receiving end of such a review, I'd find it helpful. ### 5/5 — Superb *2014-06-20, version 1.1* I like all the Enossificated apps. I have Bloom and Trope and really like them too. But Scape is a cut above. And now it's even better because you can flex your imagination naming your own Scapes. You know, it's not for everyone. There's not a hard beat anywhere. But for those who crave mellowness and the loveliness of subtle sound textures there really isn't anything to beat this. Lovely. ### 5/5 — Name your scape *2014-06-13, version 1.1* Already a great app for those that enjoy ambient music and/or creativity. The new update allows you to NAME each new scape you create, opening up a whole new level of expression and fun. This feature should have been in the original version, but it's here now. I find the generated sound collages excellent as background music while working. As other reviewers have mentioned, it might be nice to know what's going on behind the scenes but perhaps that would destroy the mystery! Sounds like source material from Eno's many installation works, combined with 88 Million Paintings and Bloom. Definitely blurs the line between album, app and installation art... P.S. I had to uninstall and then reinstall this app when I upgraded to iOS7. Since then, I have lost all my Scapes and all the additional "instrument" features - it would be nice to have the option of reinstating them rather than having to start all over again ### 2/5 — Needs more dev TLC *2014-01-09, version 1.0.1* Needs ability to name songs and playlists. Would like ability to tweak chord progression as current one is too eerie. Would recommend if those were fixed, not so much without. ### 5/5 — Nice offering, entertaining relaxing and pretty deep *2013-12-16, version 1.0.1* It is indeed Generative, Downtempo, ambient and quite a trip. It's sort of a celebrity guided tour of Mixtikl with good results guaranteed and a lot of the twiddling of randomness behind-the-scenes… There isn't much to criticize except for the fact that the gain is too high on a couple of the Rhodes and synth type sounds and the jarring can, not always hurt the subtlety of some of the other sounds and the spaces between them... A normalize for them wouldn't be asking too much. Maybe a couple of little living creatures to wander around the scapes and fuse or fight or both. It is worth the price, if the developers continue to provide content or flexibility in importation options like other offerings similarly branded. The ability to use your own sounds is the key to immortality for sound software... ### 5/5 — Beautiful *2013-12-06, version 1.0.1* I love the Bloom app and, to be honest, thought this one would be a poor sequel as it were. I could not have been more wrong. Scape takes the Bloom concept much further. The sounds and atmospheres can be crafted into a seemingly endless ambient soundscape. Now you can have a Brian Eno album playing while you work that only shifts and tilts when your mood desires it. It also ends when you decide to move on, which can be 5 minutes or 7 hours later. I use it on my long commute on headphones but also set a pattern up and have it running through my amp at home. Sometimes I change the Scape, other times I let it evolve naturally. If you love Brian Eno and enjoy creating and listening to music you will probably get as much out of this as I have. ### 3/5 — scape *2013-11-14, version 1.0.1* How the hell do you use it? Only thing I'd change: The other generative music apps have a sleep timer- it would be great if Scape had one too. As a musician, I love to improvise with Scape live ( or along with someone 'playing' Scape), and a timer would allow for a finite amount if time for a particular improvisation. Also, as someone who can't listen to music all night, it is awesome to have on for an hour or so before bed, but it would be awesome if it would shut itself off. ### 5/5 — Scape is a wonderful step forward *2013-08-08, version 1.0.1* Scape represents one of the next steps forward in music production, where the album generates itself and you control some of the variables. I would really like to have reporting capabilities to GarageBand, and other recording apps so I can build songs. Scape can be great as a stand alone, but having the option to add more voices would really bring Scape up to the next level. I appreciate the new soundstage you add, all that is left now is making Scape AUDIO BUS compliant. Why is it not when so many apps are already? Pleas add this feature ASAP! A sure 5 STAR THEN! NEBBENNY ### 3/5 — More limited than expected *2013-06-26, version 1.0.1* Like many, I've been enjoying Eno's music for decades. Bloom remains an app I use regularly. Scape is fine but I find myself wanting more variety. The Engadget video shows a larger palette on either side of the development screen than I get in the app, which shows a similar palette to the one shown in the App Store entry. Maybe these will appear in an upgrade or in-app purchase. It's easy to play around with and if you want to make more sophisticated music, you can spend the time creatively. I particularly like making multiple scapes with slight differences and putting them all in the same playlist. Problem is, it's stopped working! One question? Is there a way of naming the scapes and playlists in the same way as the Eno/Chilvers album is? If not, is that a future possibility? ### 1/5 — Not worth it *2012-11-17, version 1.0.1* I was surprised at how bad the graphics are, it's like something badly designed in the 80s. The actual difference between each of the sounds is very limited, I didn't feel I was adding much to it each time I added something. Suffice to say that if this App had opened with a Free taster, I would certainly not have paid for the full version. Yes, it's Eno style cybernetic elements which can be used to construct cybernetic soundscapes, but it sounds like pieces Eno didn't want for any other project and so donated these scraps. It's like his heart wasn't in the project. The artwork is very poor and makes for a ghastly, silly interface. And it works in iOS26! I've created some fascinating scapes, and I sincerely hope there's a way to keep this app going - I'd really hate to lose this app in the constant evolution of technology. I'm giving it 5 stars but if there's any criticisms, there's no way to offload scapes except by emailing them individually and they lose their names in the process. ### 5/5 — Spectacular — with One Caveat *2024-02-22, version 1.2* I have had Scape for close to seven years now, and am still generating my own pieces (140 and counting). Don't be fooled by the price point and abstract nature; if you're looking for vastly expansive soundscape and ambience generation at your fingertips, with the opportunity to save and manage your ideas, this is your ideal creation space. There's really nothing else like it on the App Store. However…Scape has one potentially major caveat, and it isn't the lack of a proper export function. There have been no updates in any form in over half a decade, and sooner or later it will no longer be supported by future iOS versions. Moreover, I believe that as Scape is both Opal Limited's most ambitious app and is over a decade old, it should be updated to reflect its potential in some way. I mean, Trope just received a symmetry update five months ago, and its existence predates this app. I don't know who checks these reviews (if anyone), but in sum: Opal Limited has here a unique and innovative work of beauty. While not easily understood it is nonetheless easy to use and creating an album of soothing sounds is as simple as placing images on a background you have chosen from a palette to suit your mood. Allowing infinite tweaking, this app enables you to match and then modify your frame of mind. Ambient music (at least with the droning and floating varieties) releases that idea. Nature sounds can be pleasing because, although their are certain signatures to each sound, it's never the same way twice so your mind gives up "expecting". With Scape you choose the elements and the background and then let it live! It's not about giving you a million options (although Scape has plenty), It's about choosing things and then sitting back and seeing (hearing) what they do. This app also adds new elements as you continue to play with it; I can't believe new elements are popping up even a year after I bought it! Think of this as a living, breathing ambient album (animal)! ### 5/5 — A sheer delight *2015-03-19, version 1.1* Scape is the result of a collaboration between Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, and it progresses Eno's idea of "generative music", i.e. making music from the interactions between various programmatic elements. The app allows you to choose background moods to give an overall feel to a song, onto which you drop "instruments" which create the rhythmic and melodic tones. The resulting ambient soundscapes are truly remarkable - you can create terrific pieces within minutes of installing this app, and the more you use it the more elements are made available, so the app grows as you explore it. Scape is a wonderful creative experience, and is the most used app on my iPad.
