### 1/5 — I hate this app

*2026-09-30*

I’m writing a show on my iPad this app keeps changing the dialogue text to the character block and I know I can easily fix that but it won’t let me go to the menu or do anything at all I’m just stuck writing nothing this whole time I’m just gonna stick to google doc

**Developer response:** I'm really sorry Scenarist got in the way of your writing — that's the opposite of what it's for, and thank you for telling me exactly what happened.

You found a real bug. On the on-screen keyboard, Return was adding a line break inside the current block instead of starting the next one, so dialogue ended up inside the character block. On top of that, the element buttons above the keyboard added a new block instead of fixing the current one, which made it feel like there was no way out.

The latest update fixes all of it:
• Return now moves you to the next element (Character → Dialogue → Character) like it should
• The element buttons above the keyboard change the block you're in
• With a keyboard attached, ⌘1–⌘6 set the element type and Tab cycles it

If part of your show still has dialogue stuck inside character blocks, email me at support@scenaristapp.com and I'll help you sort it out. I'd love for you to give it another try.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.8.1 — 2026-10-19

Minor improvements.

### 1.8 — 2026-10-14

Select, copy and paste whole lines, and paste in scenes from other apps.

Select several lines at once — dialogue, action, whole scenes — then copy, cut, duplicate, change their type or delete them in one go. Touch and hold a line and choose Select, or tap More > Select Lines.
Copied lines paste into any of your scripts exactly as they were.
Paste a scene from Notes, an email or a chat, and it comes in as screenplay lines: scene headings, characters, dialogue.
With a keyboard on iPad and Mac, ⌘C, ⌘X, ⌘V and ⌘A work on selected lines, and the arrow keys move between them.
Press Return on an empty character line to turn it into action.
A line that starts with a word like "iPhone", an @handle or a link keeps its lowercase first letter.
Index Cards: Delete Scene now deletes the whole scene, not just its heading.
Upgrade to Pro from a locked feature, and that feature opens right away.
Parentheticals that older exports wrapped in double parentheses, like ((quiet)), are fixed.

### 1.7 — 2026-10-12

Page counts that match Final Draft, deletes that reach all your devices, and faster iCloud sync.

Page counts now match Final Draft: 54 lines a page, and long speeches and action continue on the next page with (MORE) and (CONT'D). Most scripts come out a few pages shorter than before.
The same script now has the same number of pages on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Deleting a script now deletes it on your other devices too. It goes to Recently Deleted there, so you can restore it for 30 days. If you'd changed it on the other device in the meantime, your changes are kept.
iCloud now downloads only what's changed, so the app is ready sooner when you open it or come back to it, and uses much less data.
Scripts over 275 pages now sync with iCloud.
Mac: right-click a script in Recently Deleted to restore it.
Update Scenarist on all your devices so deletes reach every one of them.

### 1.6.1 — 2026-10-10

Safer iCloud sync between your devices, and fixes for writing with a keyboard.

- iCloud: a script left open on one device could overwrite newer changes you'd made on another. It now picks up those changes when you switch back to the app.
- If the same script is changed on two devices before they sync, both versions are kept: the other one is saved next to it as "… (iCloud copy)". Nothing is overwritten.
- Changes that couldn't upload, for example while you were offline, are sent the next time you open the app.
- Scene headings are no longer autocorrected, so "int." stays INT. instead of turning into ISN'T.
- Go to Scene (⌘L): scenes show their real numbers, typing a number jumps straight to that scene, and the arrow keys and Return work.
- Mac: the app no longer closes at the end of the welcome screens.
- Fixed a white screen that could appear at launch.
- The sync status no longer flashes "iCloud Unavailable" when the app opens.

### 1.6 — 2026-10-08

Rename your scripts, reliable typing with an iPad keyboard, and better PDFs.

- Rename any script: long-press it in the list. Changing the title on the Title Page renames it too.
- iPad with a keyboard: letters typed right after Return no longer go missing or land on the line above.
- Dual dialogue prints side by side in PDF and Preview, opens correctly in Final Draft, and Return now moves through the block without breaking it apart.
- Index Cards: the Timeline scrolls all the way, dragging a card moves the whole scene, and there's a new Move Up / Move Down.
- The PDF title page now prints everything you fill in: name, phone, based on, draft, agent and WGA number.
- Find & Replace: Replace All works whatever the capitalization, and whole-word search works.
- Scene headings like MOMENTS LATER and SAME DAY stay exactly as you typed them, and character names are no longer autocorrected.
- Fountain keeps act breaks and your contact details on export and import.
- Purchases on iPad no longer get stuck.
- Lots of smaller fixes.

Free plan: new installs now include 3 scripts, and unlimited scripts come with Scenarist Pro. If you already use Scenarist, nothing changes — you keep unlimited scripts.
