## What is Scholarta?

GENERAL

Gameplay loop:
Each round is a ten-question examination spanning all ten disciplines — History, Geography, Arts & Literature, Science, Nature, Society, Business & Economy, Entertainment, Sports, and Lifestyle. Questions ramp from the easiest rank to the hardest, so the round gets progressively tougher. Every answer is hidden inside the active letters on a keyboard: tap letter tiles from the pool to fill the blank slots and reconstruct the correct answer. Tap a filled slot to return that letter to the pool.

Time Pressure:
Each question opens with a 3-second reading window. Then the answer phase begins: the time you get depends on the length of the correct answer — 20 seconds plus one second for every letter. A short answer means a tight clock; a long one gives you more room. The faster you answer, the more points you earn.

Scoring:
A correct answer earns points based on difficulty and speed. Every point you earn in a full round flows directly into your XP Balance, pushing you toward the next level.

Hints:
Stuck during a question? The answer is on the tip of your tongue. If only you have a small nudge in the right direction. Scholarta gives you two types of hints to use during a quiz round.

TYPES OF ROUNDS

Academy rounds:
The standard ranked round. Ten questions across all ten disciplines, drawn from your current tier's difficulty mix.

Practice rounds:
Choose a specific category to train in. Practice rounds use the same question format but are focused on a single category.

Battle rounds:
Multiplayer 10-question battles against up to 7 other players. Each player pays an XP entry cost based on their tier — this forms the XP pool. A quizmaster is randomly selected and chooses the battle tier. After 10 questions, players are ranked by score and the pool is distributed according to placement.

Topic rounds:
Within every topic sits a topic round. This round becomes available after you have seen all 10 Learn More-cards in this topic. In a topic round you answer 10 question on the topic you have just learned about.

LEARNING JOURNEY

Goal:
The aim of the Learning Journey is to provide a structured learning experience. Reviewing knowledge structured into topics and then completing questions about it, allows you to retain the information much better.

Learning loop:
Tapping the topic tile will reveal 10 thumbnails. Clicking a thumbnail reveals the Learn More-card behind it. Read all 10 the cards to immerse yourself into the topic. When all 10 the cards have been visited, the topic round opens. Achieve 8/10 to unlock the next topic. Scholars who achieve 10/10 also receive a generous XP reward, which will help them progress through the tiers faster.

MULTIPLAYER

Overview:
Multiplayer battles are a fun way to test your knowledge against other scholars. It is also a good way to have access to higher tiers than your current active tier level. It is also the fastest way to level up for the best players.

Lobby system:
Create or join a lobby with up to 8 player slots. Players of similar tiers are grouped together — no two players in the same lobby can be more than 6 tiers apart, ensuring balanced matches. Each player pays an XP entry cost based on their tier. Mark yourself ready when you're prepared.

Battle & pool distribution:
The battle consists of 10 questions with live rankings after each one. After the final question, players are ranked by total score and the XP pool is distributed: 1st place gets the largest share, descending through the ranks.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.5 — 2026-10-27

New content:
- Questions: 3682 (+56)
- Info cards 542 (+19)
- Topics: 30 (+2)

### 1.4.3 — 2026-10-22

This is a meaty update:

The result screen after a quiz has been overhauled. The previous screen was still a remnant from the old design with little actionable information. The design now follows the same style as the rest of the app and shows a lot more useful information in a structured dashboard. Scholars who are into stats will have a field day!
- Leaderboard positions and position change
- Progress towards the next level
- Score comparison with your PB and the monthly highest score of any user
- How you scored on every category this round
- Breakdown of your best overall categories
- Records: fastest, streak, highest score, total rounds
- Review your misses: every question you answered wrong + correct answer + link to info card if available

Leaderboard adjustment:
- The Race leaderboard has been removed since it's currently not really interesting. We may bring it back when we reach more DAUs.
- Instead we launched the Personal Best-leaderboard. You can now see a ranking of the best score of every user on every tier, monthly/all-time and easy/normal/hardcore.

Only show incomplete answers (Premium only)
This allows scholars the option to determine which questions they no longer want to see.
- Completed answers: indicate how many correct answers do you need to give before the question is removed.
- Spaced repetition: After what time period is the question allowed back in the pool.
- You can set default values in the settings menu under gameplay.
- You can override these values for every question individually on the reveal screen.

New Content:
Total questions: 3518
Total info cards: 485
Total topics: 24

Smaller changes:
- Hardcore mode now removes the numeral countdown clock so you would no longer be able to deduce the number of characters the answer has.
- In Hardcore mode the extending line now sits neatly under the answer.
- On the leaderboard you can now always see your own position, even if you are not in the top 50.
- When a scholar abandons a round mid-game you now go to the results page first and you still receive XP for the questions you have answered correctly. However, one of your 3 free rounds in now consumed as soon as you click 'Star round', even if you abandon your game.

### 1.4.2 — 2026-10-17

Gameplay:
We really want to make Scholarta fun and accessible for all type of users: casual players, trivia enthusiasts, but also hardcore competitive quizzers. To achieve this, questions have 10 difficulty levels and a quiz round has 18 difficulty tiers to unlock. But we have also added difficulty modes which determine how questions are presented to you and what kind of help is available to you: easy, normal and hardcore.
- Normal mode: this is the default mode: You see dots as placeholders, so you know how many words there are and how many letters each word has. The keyboard has all the letters required to type the answer + a few dummy letters.
- Easy mode: The first letter of every word is already filled in. The keyboard only shows the required letters and has no dummy letters. You only get half of the XP. You will level up much slower using this game mode, but it makes the game more enjoyable for beginning quizzers who pick up Scholarta to learn more about the world, such as children.
- Hardcore mode: This removes the placeholder dots. You can still see how many words the answer has, but not how many letters each word has. This gives you 50% more XP. This game mode is exclusive for Premium Users.
You can switch between game modes by tapping the icon next to the hamburger menu.

With update 1.4.0 a feature was added that gives Premium Users 1 ticket per day to play a tier they have not yet unlocked. Now these tickets also accumulate over time if you don't use them. You now also receive them even if you don't log in. So a premium user who hasn't signed in for a whole week, will have 7 tickets when he signs back in.

More content:
- 3441 questions
- 473 info cards
- 23 topics
A lot more coming soon!

### 1.4.1 — 2026-10-15

A few bugs were squashed and new questions were added.

### 1.4.0 — 2026-10-13

This update is all about rebalancing.

The main issue that I wanted to address with this update was the fact that new players mainly see very easy 1-star questions. This scares away the more experienced quizzers who might not have the patience to grind through the levels before they get to the more challenging questions. Therefore we've made the following changes:
* three extra difficulty levels for questions: 1-star questions are still extremely easy, 10-star questions are brutally hard. This gives us a few advantages:
- Better question spread: there were plenty more questions in the middle levels. Now we have more room to spread those questions over multiple difficulty levels.
- It also allows us to add even more difficult questions that even the hardcore quizzers will sweat over.
- In the Novice-tier there are now only five 1-star questions, instead of eight, and you even get one 3-star question. This should deal with question repeats while we are still in the process of building the questions library.
- Level 1-7 keep their XP score. 7-star questions still earn max 1000 XP. A 10-star question now earns max 1800 XP. As a result you can now earn way more points for a tier round. This means you'll progress faster to the higher difficulty tiers.
* But wouldn't it also be nice to play a tier that you have not yet unlocked? Until now this way only possible in multiplayer if the quizmaster chose a higher tier. Now we've added the option to play one preview round per day where you get to choose any level. So a Novice can also play one round of Primordial (or any other tier) per day. This feature is for premium users only.

While our free tier is very generous (3 free rounds, no pesky ads to annoy you), we'll keep on adding features to the Premium tier for an even better experience: 2.99 EUR/month or 19.99 EUR/year (price of one pizza gives you one full year of unlimited gaming).
