## What is SCIS Photo?

You can now take your own photo when applying for a Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) and submit it straight from your smartphone free of charge.

The SCIS Photo App eliminates the cost of photos and offers a convenient way to provide the photo required to apply for the secure status card.

To complete your SCIS application, you must submit a complete application (Form 83-172E), a Guarantor Declaration (Form 83-169E) and supporting documentation. To find out how to apply, visit canada.ca/indian-status.

Once your complete application and supporting documentation has been received, your photo will be linked with your application. You do not need to contact Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) to inform us that you have submitted your photo through the App.

All information provided through the SCIS Photo App is encrypted. The collection and use of personal information is in accordance with the Privacy Act.

You must be registered as a Status Indian under the Indian Act to get a status card. If you are not registered, you must apply for registration and have your registration number available before using the SCIS Photo App.

The SCIS Photo App cannot be used to submit your photo to apply for the laminated Certificate of Indian Status (CIS).

The SCIS Photo App may not work on devices other than smartphones, such as iPads and tablets. The use of the SCIS Photo App on iPads and tablets will be optimized in the future.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2025-09-19, version 2.0.2*

very useful and convenient for me

### 1/5 — Great concept, Doesn’t work

*2025-08-26, version 2.0.1*

Can get all the way to taking the photo, then the app freezes and cannot move forward to submit the photo.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2025-07-08, version 2.0.1*

We live no where near a place to get a picture and have a time limit to get them in. Not sure what to do now

### 1/5 — DOES NOT WORK

*2025-06-25, version 2.0.1*

App will not let me continue once I have taken my photo on my iPhone. A screen comes up saying I will be shown comparison photos but there is not way to go forward from that screen. Need to pay for passport photos now. Not sure why they cannot make this work- seems pretty simple.

### 1/5 — Not Functional

*2025-06-01, version 2.0.1*

This app does not work

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2025-05-28, version 2.0.1*

Doesn’t let me take a picture, won’t even start the process.

### 1/5 — Issues with update

*2025-04-22, version 2.0.1*

It shouldn’t have auto correct automatically. Increases spelling mistakes.
Revert client signing back to full size.

### 1/5 — Not functional

*2025-03-07, version 1.5.0*

This app is a waste of time. I did everything the instructions said to but it constantly said there were shadows. I changed my lighting setup multiple times. The fact it won’t let you upload is frustrating because I have digital copies of my passport photo and couldn’t use those as an alternative. You can only take photos on your phone and it doesn’t work.

### 2/5 — No longer has guarantor signature prompt

*2024-03-05, version 1.5.0*

The app was functional and worked well for my community that lives 1.5 hours from a passport photo service. Since October 2023 the app no longer prompts for guarantor information or signature. Photos are still being submitted but applicants are receiving letters back that their applications are incomplete because the photos are not certified by the guarantor. Please fix this app. It served us well until it didn’t.

### 5/5 — Works for me!

*2023-03-21, version 1.4.9*

I tried applying for a new card this way and it worked! Sent in my photo through this app, and sent my forms via mail. I got my new card now!
