Bought the game to play as a family. We are used to the seedless integration of games like Ticket to Ride. This game would be fantastic but the multiplayer mode is a mess and makes connection impossible. Frustrated because we bought this for multiplayer specifically. Please fix your multiplayer!!! ### 4/5 — It's fine *2018-02-16, version 2.3* The game, and the implementation, is fine. However, the best, BEST part of playing Scotland Yard is always the after-game, when you all burst out talking about how close you were back on move 20, where were you, oh my gosh I thought you had me, etc. I'm surprised that zero thought was put into this critical part of the experience. You can't even look at the board after the game ends and they tell you Mr. X's final position. It just exits out and is lost forever. Devs, if you are reading, I highly suggest you implement the ability to recap - you already have the turn counter at the bottom of the board. After a game ends, please let players tap on each turn marker and see where the pawns were at that point. It seems like that would be easy. ### 3/5 — Multiplayer only works if you share a device *2017-10-03, version 2.3* Maybe I'm missing something, but I cannot get any multiplayer modes to work across devices. While the solo/AI game is beyond amazing, one of my fav board games on iOS — the online mode is broken. It's probably due to GC rework, but the only way to play with someone next to you is by sending the text message with a link (odd) — and the link doens't work. Can't connect. Tried dozen times. ### 4/5 — Mr. X Location Revealed (Bug) *2016-07-17, version 2.2* Great game, but there is a bug when Mr. X is played by the computer and you play as the detectives. Once Mr. X location is revealed and you move your detectives one position next to a possible Mr. X location, a sound effect is played if Mr. X is one position away from a detective. This effectively gives away Mr. X's actual position since you will know if you don't hear this sound effect Mr. X is not at that possible location even though you didn't actually have to move a detective onto that space to confirm. ### 4/5 — Good game *2015-01-10, version 2.0* A little confusing for those of us with the old board game where the bus was green and the underground was pink. Faithful representation though. Had fun playing with Bluetooth. Need to fix the dev script when holding down your finger on the map to scroll. Still worthwhile and good family fun. The AI needs to be made harder. Even on hard it's not too difficult. ### 3/5 — Good game, poor app *2014-03-11, version 1.3* This may be a fun board game, but the app is poorly implemented. I had to go online to read the rules because both the rules in-game and the tutorial were unreadable. They were missing some sort of backdrop, and the font was unreadable on the background. Furthermore, I finished just one game (won) and it gave me the "win 10 games" achievement. So, yeah, fun game, but poor app. Hope they fix the bugs soon. ### 2/5 — Believe the reviews about the tutorial *2014-02-17, version 1.3* It might be worth $5 just to see how poorly a major game company can make a tutorial. Even having read earlier reviews complaining about the unreadable text, I didn't even see the writing at first. I never dreamed someone would actually sell a program, for money, that used black text on the background of the black-ish board. (It's sorta like when you're doing a PowerPoint and you're playing with the colors and you forget to change the background. And then you look at it and think, "oops," and you fix it. Except Ravensburger didn't look at it.) Once I did see the inane introductory text (something sarcastic about "changing sides" and working for Scotland Yard -- it appears I prompted that by an inadvertent screen tap, but I haven't been able to repeat it), I still couldn't detect any way to advance. If you've never played this game before, this is not the place to start. Fortunately, I have, and the game play itself is fine. I haven't played enough to rate the AI, and haven't tried online play. But the tutorial. Oh my. Out of the more than two dozen boardgame ports and numerous other games I've downloaded, this is the worst. Hands down. ### 2/5 — LOTS OF FUN ... When it works. *2014-02-17, version 1.3* I got this game as a gift from my out-of-state family so that four of us could play together long distance. As such, we utilize the chat function frequently. Or do we? Turns out only two of us at a time can talk to each other. When one person loses the chat connection, another magically gains it. All in all, not a huge deal, but it would be nice if it had some consistency -- ideally we could all talk at once. Seems pretty obvious, but the function just doesn't seem to exist. The big problem is that one or more of us is constantly getting booted out of the game. This wasn't always an issue, but for the past several hours it's been impossible to finish a round. We finally just gave up. It's always at least one person who loses connection or the game freezes/crashes. We all have optimal internet connections (no issues with quality apps) and our software is all up to date. Fix it, and we'll come back. When it works, it's a blast! It just never works. ### 3/5 — Good first attempt to bring Scotland Yard back to life! *2014-01-24, version 1.3* Love this game as a board game, which I still play today! Has the potential of 5 stars, but I would like to have the option to have the original board game look 'n' feel, as well as this modernised version, as well as some of the improvements recommended by other reviewers. So gladly give 5 stars, when these two conditions are met! ### 3/5 — Nice but could be better *2013-09-09, version 1.22* I like Ravensburger puzzles and so I decided to download the app even though its pricey for a game I never heard of. So far it is interesting and different from other puzzle apps. I'd like friends to play with me but I don't want them to shell out $6 for a game. :-/ What could be better: My phone died but I was able to continue the game, except I could no longer select tickets and had to wait for the timer to go out and let my piece move randomly. I absolutely hate how I can't see where Mr. X was hiding because there's a pop-up of a newspaper saying he's been caught at location whatever. I have no feedback on how far or close I was to catching him. This needs to be changed!!!!!!!!! I get dizzy when the puzzle moves around to the other players and annoyed as well because I'm trying to strategize where Mr. X is but can't because the camera zoom keeps moving. There should be an option to turn it off. My bot companions get in the way and they block me off and make me waste my taxi fares. I wish there was an option to fire then in the middle of the game. ### 4/5 — Good game play. Poor rules/tutorial *2013-06-26, version 1.2* Bought this because I loved this game as a kid and it had good reviews. I needed a quick refresher on the rules and was sorely disappointed. The designers must have put this together on an iPad or just been clueless because the font is a little small and even worse, it's black on dark blue. The gameplay is great though and made up for it after I figured of how to play again. I still think the price is a bit steep. ### 4/5 — Great game Horrible tutorial *2013-06-06, version 1.2* The game play is fantastic. But if you don't already know how to play and are hoping to use the tutorial, your in for a huge disappointment . As you can see from the screen shots above, the game board is fairly dark and very busy. When you launch the tutorial all the text to explain the game appear on the screen in thin black letters which you can't even make out against the backdrop of the screen. Did none of the developers ever even try the tutorial before releasing the game? It's awful, completely useless. Please fix this for future users. ### 4/5 — Mostly great and worth a purchase *2013-06-03, version 1.2* The game mechanics are fun, simple yet tricky, and the iOS version handles gameplay elements very well, such as a simple engine sound effect for each of the three types of transport and special chimes for Mister X powers. My first objection is the AI: even on Hard, X and Detective pawns will both make bonehead moves when they are close to escaping/capturing. The detectives often fail to take account of other pawns' need for train line access to move in quickly on a Reveal turn, and fail to box-in or corner X well (which requires awareness of the other pawn positions). X slips up as well, only using Black tickets to take river trips (as opposed to masking a bus or train ride to confuse the detectives more effectively). This is not to say the game is not still fun, just that some updates might make the game MORE fun. Also, you as the player can take control of some or all detectives. My second objection is the Game Center, though I'm not sure where the fault lies: it appears to take me more than 6 minutes to make a multiplayer connection, and it frequently fails and has to retry. I've yet to actually play with other real players in the week I have owned the game. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Terrible Game *2021-10-31, version 2.5* Save your money on this game. You can't put out a simple update that will fix the TEXT COLOR in the tutorial? Do you have just one guy working on all your apps and he's currently on sabbatical or something? This is not a difficult fix, and it's perfectly absurd that this issue has not yet been resolved. How do you expect to introduce new players to your game when they cannot read THE TUTORIAL. Fix this. When inviting players, it sends iCloud links that don’t do anything. Too bad, since this appears to be a decent game otherwise. ### 2/5 — Great game, but multi-player completely broken *2017-12-25, version 2.3* I stumbled on this older game and gave it a try. Enjoyed the simple rapid play against the AI, and wanted to try against friends and family on separate devices. No can do. When you select Bluetooth (which should also have a Wi-Fi option), it says to first select the number of players and then press “Connect”. But there are no buttons to select the number of players. If I go ahead and just press Connect it spins looking for a device, but it never finds one - even though a Bluetooth iPad was just a couple feet away. OK...I then tried the Internet option. Selected the name of a Game Center friend to play 2 player game with. Their device was on and open in my house. Again it just spun and never connected. I suspect that since they used Game Center for the connection, they may not have kept up with the protocol for the new Game Center...or maybe this method cannot even be used anymore. Too bad...hope they fix it. This renditition is true to the original board game. Very well done, except for this programming script that pops up after the update. Please fix. For a fantastic family COOPERATIVE board game by Ravensburger, check out WHOOWASIT; it's one of the best board games I've ever played, and it's fun and challenging for the whole family...kids AND adults. I do not agree with the negative feedback regarding the tutorial. Love the animation and the quality of the graphics. Better than the original board game! Is this enough yet? ### 5/5 — Long-time Scotland Yard fan *2012-05-29, version 1.01* On a whim, I looked for Scotland Yard in the App Store today...and was very pleasantly surprised to find that it was released only a couple weeks ago! Awesome! This is one of my favorite games from my childhood. Everyone I've ever introduced to the game has been intrigued and been hooked. ### 5/5 — Fun! True to the original. *2012-05-22, version 1.01* It's a challenging game of cat & mouse. Beautiful graphics, smooth play. One itsy bitsy gripe - when the game is over you can't review the final positions or go back through the 'moves' log to replay it.
