I don't like mind numbing repetition. This app makes it fun to learn. After you get a hand full of words memorized you start learning new ones but then it throws you one you've already memorized and I'm like wait I know this... Oh yea that's it! It defiantly commits words to long term memory. The only setting I changed was that I didn't want to see the pronunciation before I click get answer, all the other settings work well the way they are!👍👍 ### 5/5 — Best for traveling and time use *2016-02-05, version 2.9.9* Been using this since 3 quarters. I also spend hours a day on the bus. I find this very fun and my Japanese vocabulary has really gotten better. I also do it before bed sometimes because the rhythm helps me fall asleep. But at least I'm learning something! I use this app just about everyday. I have found this app (the full version, with sounds) invaluable. The way it gets you to learn is incredible. I'm recalling words before I'm even realising what the words are. This is such a useful tool if you want to learn Japanese. I highly recommend learning the kana first then setting the quiz language to kana not English. Reading the words in kana help with learning the kanji because you can identify parts of the words in kana. It takes time to learn Japanese, allow plenty of time and don't get discouraged. Eventually it gets easier ✌️ ### 5/5 — Excellent App *2015-03-23, version 2.8.3* I love this app. I used to use it daily, but I got busy with life and stopped studying Japanese all together. I've started studying again and this was the first app I went to. I love that you can study by hearing the word only. I'm a terrible listener, and this app really helps me out. I don't know why I love this flash card app so much, but I do. Worth the price. Only thing is, I wish I could test reading separately from listening, so I could practice reading words in Kanji, while still practicing listening. ### 4/5 — I love it! *2015-01-02, version 2.8.3* I downloaded this app a few days ago out of curiosity and having already known a fair amount of Japanese vocabulary words. By the next day I had to get the full version it was so much fun. The flash card functions are smooth and effective and so are the other games. I've found that I am remembering more words than I ever have using the app Kanjibox. I highly recommend this app to anyone who is learning Japanese! My only complaint is that when I jotted down a note on the flashcard game for the word for health I mistyped and now it won't let me delete the note or renter a new note. Please fix this! Otherwise the app is flawless and is still a great buy. The full version is well worth the 8 dollars, but the free version is good too. ### 5/5 — Good App *2014-12-21, version 2.8.3* Good app, has various exercises for learning Kanji. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 2/5 — Flaw in the algorithm? *2016-05-09, version 2.9.9* I read a lot of reviews before purchasing the full version, and I noticed that most people have a very positive opinion about this app. I can't agree. They seem to have ripped off KanjiBox's quiz style but improved on the appearance. I like that they added an おばちゃん voice that speaks the words as a means of multimodal input, and I like the kanji breakdown by radical. On the other hand, no matter how much I tweak the settings, I can't seem to get to a point where I get true spaced repetition. Every time I start, the app gives me the same 4-5 あ words (炙る, 暴れる, あいまい, 相変わらず, etc) before moving on to a ton of words I've never seen and will never see again. I'd love to see an update that improves the SRS functionality, and I'll happily raise my star rating at that point! I'm currently wrapping up the N3 vocab list ~200 words left. Adding some of the following features would easily give this 5 stars: - Fix the "Allow phone rotation" setting. Currently the app rotates regardless of the setting. - Allow you open the Kanji in the Kanji/Hanzi app by clicking on the Kanji for each vocab word. - Allow you to add notes to the front side of the notecard. Currently it's hard to distinguish between different meanings of an English word. For example, the English word "company" could be looking for kaisha, kousei, or nakama. I like how there are different ways to learn so it doesn't become stagnant. If you practice daily, 15-20 mins. You can keep up with words you learn and add a few new ones. I do like how each day I retrain between 60 - 90 words I learned per session. If I miss a day...words are added automatically, turning the session to 90 - 120 (and that's with me being 50 days in). The sessions are small in beginning. I do recommend this app. It's not perfect, but definitely a GOOD JOB! 😊 ### 4/5 — Functional, not expansive. *2015-04-13, version 2.8.3* It has a good variety of learning modes, but doesn't seem to have some of the more basic features (like learning the symbols independently) of it's other related apps. That said, an important feature for a Japanese student is the ability to create custom practice lists. It has a great system that uses spaced learning to present specific vocabulary at a time where you may be close to forgetting those particular words or characters. That being said, I was promoted to write this review because of the service I was provided. I recently purchased an old iPad and when I tried to restore my purchase on the new device it wouldn’t work. So after trying some work a rounds of my own, I contacted the support email and, within a couple of hours, got a response back. To make a long story short, Henry, through several suggestions with quick back and forth emails solved my problem. I appreciate the effort. Good product, good service. This app uses a different study approach. They put similar sounding words together, and repeat all your words when you’re about to forget them, and overall is great for long term memory. For free you can use flashcards, matching, and memory games. Each word has a place you can type notes, and sometimes gives little stories to help you remember the word. Have not seen a japanese learning app this good throughout a whole year of trying japanese learning apps. Totally a recommendation to any (jlpt 5 if you go free route) learner! ### 5/5 — It looks like it’s been abandoned, but it’s pretty great *2018-08-29, version 3.0.2* It’s basically a really good Japanese vocab flashcard app. Too bad it hasn’t had an update in two years, though it’s still working just fine for me in 2018. ### 5/5 — Best Japanese vocabulary app *2017-10-11, version 3.0.2* All of the best vocab methods in one app: creating your own deep memory hooks (mnemonics), clustering of similar words (including sound and kanji), audio, example sentences, breaking down kanji into elements, spaced repetition... Everything I wanted, and the paid version covers 8000+ terms divided by JLPT level. It's highly customisable, too. Also--bonus--you can tell it when you already know something from elsewhere.
