So if you turn off all the words and just turn on 4 words at a time and keep repeating it, you will build long-term memory. I just wish there was an 'All Off' switch. It's designed to optimize retention and learning and it delivers. Lots of great game modes to challenge yourself with. Yes, there are other flashcard apps. But, this one polishes the experience to an amazingly high shine. If want to knock out the vocabulary, put your time into this app and never look back. It has the spaced repetition flash cards, but if you get bored of that, there are other game modes such as matching or multiple choice. I've the "assistant" character changes clothes each day, which I found cool. The only downside is that the full version is rather expensive, but I think the content, polish, and overall quality of the map make that money worthwhile if you're serious about learning the language. ### 4/5 — My first app purchase *2015-12-07, version 2.9.9* I like the variety of ways to learn new words and test yourself, however it takes too long to get well-known words removed from the circulation when starting off... It keeps on repeating the same easy words... It got really annoying! ### 5/5 — Best Korean App *2015-07-17, version 2.9.7* This is the best green app I've seen. My in-laws are Korean so I've been working on learning the language and downloaded about seven other apps to help me learn and this one is by far the best. There are lots of good review methods: quizzes, matching, flashcards. It monitors your progress and is very user-friendly. ### 5/5 — Downloads Korean words into my brain. *2015-06-25, version 2.9.6* This app is so worth the money. My vocabulary has increased 3 times what it was in just a few weeks. It's not hard to use, either. I had an issue syncing between my iPad and iPhone, but contacted customer care and they were supportive. The sync isn't exact but it gets closer to perfect as I continue to sync my devices between study sessions. Way better value than anything else I have tried so far! ### 5/5 — Awesome app *2015-05-05, version 2.8.3* This app is extremely well designed and has a ton of features, definitely the best app for learning korean vocab. The only feature that would be nice is a way to turn off the romanized pronunciation next to the characters, I feel like this allows me to use the romanized spelling as a crutch instead of reading the korean. ### 5/5 — Favourite app to study vocabulary! *2015-04-15, version 2.8.3* This app was so much fun to study with that I purchased the full version. I think the audio games are really helpful for recognizing words when other people are talking. Reading is one thing, but I haven't been able to find good resources for listening to spoken Korean. The flash cards are useful too-they've helped me learn to read faster. This is a great app for supplanting your other Korean language studies! ### 5/5 — A Truly Great Aid to Fluency *2015-02-19, version 2.8.3* I can't say enough good things about this app. If you are at the advanced beginner stage, where beginning books are too easy but intermediate ones a little too challenging, this is a great tool for you to advance your vocabulary to make those intermediate books more accessible to you. Now, I want to add some qualifications: you do need to be actively studying a formal textbook or coursework and actively consuming Korean media for this app to really help you. Why? Frankly, just because this app marks a word as "learned" doesn't mean you necessarily know it. What the app does for you is provide you with a foundation of familiarity with the word as an aid to future understanding. So, once you've "learned" the word, you may not know it, but you will be able to recognize it in other contexts, look up the meaning a second time, and that combination of circumstances will ensure you actually do learn it. I recommend you study at what I consider the "medium" difficulty setting, where you are provided with a word/pronunciation and four choices of translation. This will keep you from getting frustrated because its study pace is a lot faster than the simple flashcard setting. (One more great thing about this app: it groups a lot of its words according to their initial chinese root syllables. For example, you will learn the words for "farmer", "farm", and "agriculture" all at once. This is an enormous aid to understanding.) My only issues with this app: I would actually prefer if adjectives were only introduced in their dictionary forms. Also, the family groupings of nouns and the groupings of noun-verb pairs are great but verbs, adverbs, and the "become" and "cause to be" form of adjectives and verbs are sometimes separated amongst the levels in kind of an odd way. There are also a few spelling errors, and sometimes the "initial" translations are not actually the primary ones. Otherwise, five stars, highly recommended. ### 5/5 — Amazing! *2015-01-27, version 2.8.3* I have been studying Korean for 3 years and this is the BEST vocabulary app I have found! I LOVE it. This is exactly what I needed to drill vocabulary words into my head! Of course you gotta pay up front for ANYTHING useful. Plus it's a hassle just changing words. Don't even waste your time or phone memory. ### 1/5 — Pronunciation issues and other major issues *2014-05-29, version 2.02* The voiced pronunciations are wrong most of the time, but you wouldn't know that unless you paid the 10$ for the full app since they locked that part out of the demo. Pretty smart thing to do if you are planning on never fixing that. I hope the devs prove me wrong, but until they do, don't waste your money on this one. Additionally, the example sentences which give context to the word's meaning were obviously obtained via a search engine and not a korean speaker, hence the example of "Columbus discovered America." for the korean word for 'bus' which is beosu in korean. ### 2/5 — Not helpful *2016-01-05, version 2.9.9* I would like to have a good app that helps me to learn Korean by playing games. So I tried this app but it was a disappointment. The free version is just too shallow and couldn't really attract me to pay further. 90% of the new words are English words in Korean Hangul. You can just guess the word if you know how to read Hangul. Not useful. So far I can only figure out the right answer through process of elimination. And a lot of the definitions conflict with real Korean school vocabulary. Don't trust this app 100% ### 3/5 — Somewhat useful, but don't trust the example sentences too much... *2017-10-18, version 3.0.2* Full disclosure: I am working on an app for English-speaking learners of Korean, so I'm a direct competitor. That said, I am also a learner of Korean, and I thought the app might be useful to review some vocabulary. The app has lots of different ways of quizzing the user on the content, which is good, but the example sentences are... of very random quality. Many of them are fine and helpful, but others are obviously broken, so don't put too much faith in them because not all of them are proper Korean. I'm not sure where they come from, but I'm pretty sure they weren't checked by a native speaker. The definitions themselves are mostly decent compared to those found in many competing Korean-language-learning apps. There's definitely room for improvement though. The pronunciations sound alright to me so far, but be aware that only a fraction of the words have example sentences. As of 2017-10-18, there is no support whatsoever for Apple's iPad Pro keyboard. The app allows you to add notes to vocabulary cards, but I had to type them on the glass because the app was completely unaware of the keyboard. (The keyboard works fine in other apps. It's not broken.) As far as Korean flashcard apps go, this one isn't so bad. It has not been updated in (more than?) a year though. It could become a pretty decent app if it were polished a little and good example sentences were added to each and every entry. I have no clue whether the developer has any intention of doing that (or of ever updating the app). As it is, it's neither excellent nor awful. I'll probably get my money's worth out of it, but if you don't like paying for apps, you might want to test the app thoroughly before you pull the trigger (or not) on the in-app purchase. If anything, the vocabulary list gives you a good idea of the vocabulary you have to learn if you're serious about mastering the language. (It does not help much with grammar though.) ### 3/5 — Nice Features, Free Intro App Annoying *2017-07-22, version 3.0.2* I would like to have gone far enough into the list to experience the app at my level (which I didn't think was very high until this), but I grew way too tired of 99% borrowed words in the intro lesson. While I believe it's good to know borrowed words, there definitely could've (and should've) been at least a slightly more balanced mix of borrowed and native words. 안녕하다 seemed to be literally the only non-borrowed word, and if I wanted to experience the app with more words like that, I was told to pay the $8.99 fee to upgrade. Maybe it's much better for very beginner Korean learners. The listening was nice and I appreciated the Diary/Learning/Due pages. If the intro were a bit better vocab-wise, I might be willing to pay the extra money. Might. ### 3/5 — Amazing but.... *2015-11-28, version 2.9.9* Hi guys this is one of the only apps out there that has as many words as this does. I like the app but it's too hard for me to control the amount of new words that come out. I want to see more new words faster. Not wait and review and that sort of thing. Just make it easier for me to control how many new words I can practice with. I want all of them available now. I know this may not be ideal for learning in your opinion guys but I want the option of doing this. As a customer if I don't know how to do this and it's already an option then it's not simple enough. I've had this app a year and don't use it becuase it's too hard to control how fast the new words come out. I want all of them now. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Underrated ~ Must Try! *2025-10-06, version 3.5.0* I’ve been raving about this app, for all the languages it offers, for no less than 10 years. No one has heard of it which is a shame because I give it single hand credit for both my Korean and Spanish skills. The learning algorithm is groundbreaking and extremely effective, compared to any other language apps I’ve tried. While it doesn’t do much in the way of grammar, the vocabulary alone will ensure you can Frankenstein sentences together, read, and navigate the countries/languages of your choice. My only complaint is that they don’t offer this app in more languages! *wink wink* please create more! I only wish that there was an option to exclude the romanization. As an English speaker my eyes naturally lock in on the romanized version of the word. This makes it difficult to focus on the Hangul. Edit: June 2020 I have to be honest here. I recently became serious about my language study and found that this app is a solid home base. I use this app to replace a flash card system and access it EVERY day. You are able to look through the list of vocabulary words and add a new word to rotation by selecting “learn”. This is helpful when you already know a word but want to keep a current, active list of how many words that you will be using. This is super helpful to me because I study Korean using a combination of different media and apps. I like that the app shows the number of words that you have learned and has different levels. In my experience the levels are appropriately assigned. The color levels assigned to the words that you know or don’t know also help with review. The ability to use of the different methods of review helps to learn the words without using the romanization. When I switched to the mode where I hear the word only, my understanding of the language improved immensely. All in all I am more than satisfied with this app. I’m glad that I paid the fee to upgrade. ALSO, THERE IS ONLY A ONE TIME FEE!!! I will be keeping this app as long as I am language learning. Borrowed Words Note: the lowest level has many borrowed words. But this is NOT the case for the higher levels. This app has a simple interface but it gets the task done (you can turn off Anime girl). It also has audio for all of the basic words. Best part is the learning feature which means you never have to worry about what words to go back and study for. It has an algorithm that shows you words you are forgetting. 1 time upgrade fee. Seriously, other language apps, take notes from these guys.
